NBA Draft 2025: Why The Hornets Pick Liam Neeley Slid to No.29
UCONN's Liam McNeeley was regarded as one of the better freshmen players in the country during his lone season with the two-time defending champions. The former top-10 recruit led the Huskies in scoring (14.5) and was second in rebounds per game (6.0) while shooting nearly 87 percent from the free-throw line.
It took The Big East Freshman of the Year nearly the entire night to hear his name called during the first round of the 2025 NBA draft before he became the 29th overall pick of the Charlotte Hornets. The reasons behind the wait largely stemmed from some flaws within his game.
For starters, McNeeley isn't the most athletic wing at his 6'7 size. He generally relies on footwork and off-ball movement to generate positive momentum while driving to the basket or preparing to launch a three-point shot.
He isn't the best defender either, lacks burst as an on-ball creator and saw his three-point percentage wane (31.7 %) while nursing a nagging ankle injury throughout the second half of his freshman campaign. When healthy, McNeeley is a move-shooting wing with secondary playmaking upside, providing a skill set that the Hornets prioritized in this year's draft.
Both McNeeley and Duke's Kon Knueppel were the Hornets' first-round selections, and each add shooting to a team that lacked it last season. Charlotte finished 28th in three-point percentage during 2024-2025 despite reserve guard Seth Curry leading the league in three-point percentage (45.6) on six threes per game.
'I think I'm a very versatile player and can be plugged into any system," McNeely said to the press yesterday night after being drafted. 'I've played many different roles in my career, and I'm going to work my tail off and work as hard as anybody.'
In order to select McNeeley, the Hornets shipped the rights of Center Mark Williams to the Phoenix Suns for their 29th pick and a future 2029 first-round selection. For a potential high-floor spacer and offensive connector, the deal has the a chance to be a great value investment.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — For the third time in less than a month, the Philadelphia Phillies were on the positive end of a catcher's interference call. In the first inning of their game Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners, J.T. Realmuto was called out on strikes on a pitch by Bryce Miller that would have ended the inning. However, Realmuto argued that his swing was interfered with by Seattle catcher Mitch Garver — who was starting behind the plate while usual catcher and MLB homer leader Cal Raleigh was in the lineup as a designated hitter. The Phillies challenged the call, and after a video review, it was determined that Garver's glove did interfere with Realmuto's bat on the swing, and Realmuto was awarded first base. Last month, when Boston was in Philadelphia, catcher Carlos Narvaez was called for inference in consecutive games, in both instances allowing a run to score, one of them to end a game in extra innings. It was the first walk-off catcher's interference since 1971. This time, there was no damage as Miller induced a fielder's choice ground out by Alec Bohm on the first pitch after the review, ending the inning with Seattle trailing 1-0 thanks to Kyle Schwarber's NL-leading 44th homer. New Penguins Top Six Projection Has Intriguing Look
The Pittsburgh Penguins brought in several new players this off-season, so their lineup will certainly look different next season. They will also have plenty of decisions to make when it comes to assembling their lineup, so they will need to be watched closely during the pre-season. The NHL's official Facebook account recently shared its top six projection for the Penguins, and it offers a mix of everything. For the Penguins' first line, they are predicting that Sidney Crosby will center Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust. If Rust and Rakell both end up not being traded this off-season, it would not be surprising if they played on a line with Crosby. They both are coming off career-best seasons and have great chemistry with Crosby. Thus, if this ends up being the Penguins' first line, they should make a big impact offensively. As for the Penguins' second line, they have Evgeni Malkin at center, which is a no-brainer. However, things get interesting when it comes to Malkin's wingers, as the NHL's official account has newcomer Anthony Mantha and prospect Ville Koivunen playing with No. 71. When healthy, Mantha has shown during his career that he can be an impactful second-line winger, so testing him out with Malkin would be understandable. As for Koivunen, he is one of the Penguins' most promising prospects, so having him play with a legend like Malkin could be excellent for his development. It will be interesting to see what the Penguins' top six ends up being at the start of the season. Some other candidates who could compete for a spot in the Penguins' top six include Rutger McGroarty, Philip Tomasino, and Tommy Novak, if he plays on the wing.
