Suspects in RM2.1mil gang robbery plead not guilty

The Stara day ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Two men pleaded not guilty to a charge of gang robbery involving losses amounting to RM2.1mil last month.
Mohd Syaqir Mohd Ami, aged 30, and Nur Mohamed Mahsar Mohamed Nor, aged 34, were jointly charged with two other individuals, who remain at large, for committing a gang robbery against property belonging to a 31-year-old Chinese national, Chen Kexue.
The assets include a branded wristwatch worth RM1.2mil, three gold bars weighing 300 grammes, RM100,000 in cash and five mobile phones of various brands, worth an estimated RM2,146,000.
The act was allegedly committed at a villa in Bukit Damansara here at 10.10pm on July 21.
The charge was framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping if convicted.
Deputy public prosecutor Nidzuan Abdul Latif did not offer bail because the offence is non-bailable, Bernama reported.
DPP Nidzuan also urged the court to take into account the seriousness of the offence and the significant financial losses involved.
'There is a risk of the accused fleeing because during the arrest, one of them tried to escape.
'However, if the court grants bail, I request that each accused be granted RM60,000, along with additional conditions that they must report to the nearest police station and surrender their passports to the court,' DPP Nidzuan said.
Sessions Court judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin granted bail of RM15,000 to each accused, along with additional conditions requested by the prosecution.
The court set Sept 30 for mention.

RTD cracks down on motorists driving luxury cars without road tax, insurance

KUALA LUMPUR: The actions of a foreign man driving an exotic vehicle using a fake driver's licence were uncovered during Op Luxury 3.0 conducted by the Road Transport Department (RTD) here. The motorist was stopped in Gombak after he was spotted speeding in a modified orange colour Porsche from Kuantan back to Kuala Lumpur. During the inspection, he presented a driver's licence which was suspected to be fake, and checks confirmed the document was invalid. It is believed the man had been using the forged document for the past year and claimed that the car belonged to a friend. RTD senior enforcement director, Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan, said his department detained 104 luxury vehicles of various makes in the operation, which began on Thursday. He said the operation involved inspections of luxury vehicles driven by both locals and foreigners. "Twelve foreigners were screened during the operations, of which nine had committed various offences. "These offences include using fake driver's licences, driving without a licence, expired licences, expired road tax, and possession of forged documents," he said at a press conference at the RTD Kuala Lumpur impound depot on Saturday. He added that authorities did not rule out the existence of a syndicate selling such forged documents. "A detailed investigation will be conducted, and future operations may lead to the exposure of this syndicate. "This case proves that there are foreign nationals who blatantly challenge our laws by driving luxury cars without following the rules," he said. Kifli said most of the vehicles seized were valued at over RM500,000, with the majority of drivers originating from South Asia. "They gave various excuses, claiming they forgot to renew their road tax or that the vehicle belonged to a friend or relative," he said. He added that RTD would intensify joint operations with other agencies, including the Immigration Department, to ensure that foreign nationals do not flout the law. "RTD will also step up integrated operations with other agencies such as the Immigration Department. "On Monday, we will submit a proposal paper to the Transport Ministry for more drastic action against these offences," he said. He added that records showed most owners immediately renew their road tax and insurance once their vehicles are seized. "The types of vehicles detained this time differ from previous operations. These are not repeat offences by the same individuals, but rather committed by different offenders," he said.

SUPP Complaints Bureau chief seeks federal intervention on scam trafficking cases

KUCHING: Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau chief, Milton Foo, recently met with Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and Sarikei MP, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, to appeal for federal government intervention on the growing number of online scam and human trafficking cases. During the meeting, Foo informed Huang that since he took office in 2022, the bureau has received over 100 complaints regarding online scams, with total losses exceeding RM10 million. These scams include low-interest loan scams, high-return online and stock investment fraud, fake law enforcement officer impersonation scams (such as court, tax department, and immigration officers), parcel delivery scams, online marketplace fraud, AI video scams, and romance scams. In a recent statement, Foo also highlighted 45 human trafficking cases, involving victims from various ethnic backgrounds, including 31 Chinese, nine Malay, and five Dayak individuals, with ages ranging from 19 to 52. These victims hail from urban and rural areas across Sarawak, including Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Sarikei, Bintangor, Kapit, Engkilili, Bintulu, and Miri. They were lured by high-paying job advertisements on social media or by friends to go to countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and the UAE, or were transited through Singapore to other regions in Europe or South America. Foo confirmed that out of the 45 cases, 39 victims have been successfully rescued and repatriated, while three are missing, two are still trapped in scam compounds, and one is currently being held in a foreign immigration detention centre or prison. Huang, who is also the Repok assemblyman, expressed serious concern over the increasing cases of online scams and human trafficking. He pledged to discuss the matter with his federal cabinet colleagues to formulate countermeasures and review existing laws and policies to strengthen the fight against cybercrime and protect the public. He also emphasised the importance of increasing public awareness alongside government enforcement efforts and urged Foo to continue his efforts in assisting Sarawakian victims of human trafficking to return home to their families as soon as possible, and offered his help in communicating and coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
