Swimmer misses graduation to win bronze at World Championships
"They were always very understanding and helped me where they could," she said. "Luckily UWE was very supportive."
"I've learnt a lot studying at UWE not only with my degree but in other aspects of life as well," she added."One of the main things for me is I've learnt how important a good balance is, to make sure I'm achieving the most I can while also ensuring my happiness and wellbeing is a priority."
This was the sixth senior World Championships that Ms Thorpe has attended and the first time she competed in the free mixed duet.It follows her win at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she secured Team GB's first-ever Olympic medal in the sport alongside her competing partner Kate Shortman, winning a silver medal.Ms Thorpe said: "I'm honoured to have been selected to represent my country on the world stage again and particularly in the same year as completing my degree."
The swimmer's course cohort are some of the almost 6,000 students who accepted their UWE Bristol degrees during a fortnight of ceremonies from 21-31 July.Ms Thorpe now has her sights set on competing at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. She added: "It's reassuring knowing that if anything impacts my swimming career, I now have my degree as well."

And two of them - John Stones and Bernardo Silva - are in the final year of their contract. There's no Kevin de Bruyne, no Rodri and no Jack Grealish. Moved on, laid up and kicked out. Ederson - the cornerstone of everything Guardiola stands for - is on the cusp of a move to Turkey. Club warrior, Kyle Walker, is finding out how the other half live in Burnley. And Ilkay Gundogan, on the substitutes' bench, should have 999 on the back of his shirt: Only to be used in an emergency. It feels like a new page was being turned at Molineux. And this new-model side needs to re-establish the credentials that carried it to so much success. This was a pretty good start. Manchester City's cloak of invincibility was torn - not shredded - last season but this is elite sport and, as the watching public is told repeatedly, the margins are fine. Standards need to slip by a few degrees of competency and results can be affected. There is no hiding place, after all. And once the confidence-supreme upon which the club's success was built is slowly eroded, then others will scent blood. That's how it was at Molineux. Initial trepidation among the home support. Fifteen minutes of adhering to a tight shape and then those in the old gold shirts began to chance their luck. Marshall Munetsi had a goal wiped out for offside and the natives smelled blood. They should have known better. This vintage do not possess De Bruyne's magical quality of creating something out of nothing. This painter of pictures, this ammunition-provider, has moved to pastures new to Naples, where the microscope will be equally fierce. Guardiola has had to find someone else to load the gun but no-one yet knows the true pedigree of Tijjani Reijnders, Oscar Bobb or Nico Gonzalez. Are they the real deal, capable of stringing together victory after victory? Of inhabiting the rarefied air at the top of the Premier League and fighting battles on several fronts? It might be over-stating the situation after the evidence of one 90-minute performance but while there were glitches in the system, there was hope of a return to the all-conquering days of the year before last. All that pressure was bound to tell on a group of players that was getting old together. It needed refreshing. It needed looked at again. And the post-season interview from Sheikh Mansour suggested that this was very much the case as a new cluster of players look set to prove themselves worthy of a club that has become conditioned to winning during the past decade. It is still too early to tell from where the next crop of heroes will come but there can be no doubting the quality of some of them. For instance, the outstanding invidivual on show was Reijnders. In the white-hot heat of the engine-room at this level, Rodri has proved himself supreme. Any team on the planet would miss the talent of a man who picked up the Ballon d'Or and his absence is again a source of worry. But not so much now as the £46m AC Milan midfielder looked more than capable of providing a viable alternative. It can be said right now: The prospect of Rodri teaming up with this guy will be one to savour. And what of Nico Gonzalez? He has proved more of a miss than a hit since his arrival at the club but there were the signs of recovery in his play. Rayan Ait-Nouri was a withdrawn soul on this, on his return to his former club, but he did enough to suggest that he will become a favourite and well capable of plugging a gap on the left-hand side defence. It has been an Achilles heel for some time. Maybe no more. It was difficult to pass judgement on keeper James Trafford because the visitors dominated but he was clean, tidy and did what he had to do. The faces from yesteryear will never fade away at the Eithad. They achieved too much. But time waits for no man in football. Guardiola, and his paymasters have recognised that. Ninety minutes is not a decent sample size. But it's fair to say that whatever was broken last season is well on its way to being mended.

Frank was without injured pair James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, but Richarlison's double helped Spurs secure a first league win since April 6. Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style after they swept West Ham aside with a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light. Following an eight-year absence from the league, the Black Cats went ahead just after the hour mark through Eliezer Mayenda before Dan Ballard's header doubled their advantage. Substitute Wilson Isidor came off the bench to wrap up three points in Sunderland's first Premier League appearance since May 2017. Rodrigo Muniz struck deep into stoppage time as Fulham snatched a 1-1 draw at Brighton. Albion had looked on course to make a winning start to the season when Matt O'Riley tucked home a 55th-minute penalty after Sander Berge brought down Georginio Rutter. LIVERPOOL started their season with a bang — and I expect it to be drama all the way to a second Premier League title in a row. Bournemouth gave them a really good go at Anfield on Friday night and exposed some potential weak points, but Arne Slot's men showed their quality in the end. 7 7 It feels like it is going to be a great season, with a few good clubs looking to challenge at the top of the table. But I still can't get past the Reds for top spot. They have recruited so well this summer and just in case we had forgotten about him, Mo Salah reminded us of his class with a goal late on. Richard Hughes, who played for me at Portsmouth, has done an incredible job. He got a bit of stick early on after a quiet summer last year — and all the noise around contracts for Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. But he is an encyclopedia of football — ask him about any player, playing anywhere and he will know all about them. He is a real plus for Liverpool and certainly looks to have found a gem in Hugo Ekitike — if they go and get Alexander Isak on top then everyone should be worried. I don't like how Isak has handled the situation, but this is the way it is now. He will know exactly what is on offer at Anfield in terms of a contract and will have known for some time. His team-mates won't give a monkeys about how he has behaved recently, they all know it could be them in that boat next year pushing for a big move. The fans all have the hump with him, and rightly so, but the moment he comes back and scores a goal there will be 50,000 Geordies singing his name. That's just the name of the game now, he has no problems either way, but Liverpool's title rivals will have a problem if he makes the move to Anfield. The most dangerous rival, again, will be Arsenal. They have certainly got stronger since finishing second, again, last time out and finally have that striker we've all been saying they needed. Mikel Arteta's side fell away a bit at the end last season but they will be back. No one should be calling for Arteta's head if the Gunners don't quite get there again, he has done a smashing job there and just been beaten by some very good teams. And even though I've gone for Slot's side, I'm not saying Arsenal can't do it, they can and look to have what they need to kick on. Chelsea get going at home against Crystal Palace today and are an interesting one to look at. They could go close to the title, for sure, but I can't see them going all the way. The Blues have signed some good players, they have a strong, powerful squad, but there might be too many options for Enzo Maresca and that can bring problems. I can't name their best team, even their best centre-halves. That is not the case with Arsenal and Liverpool, the teams can name themselves at times. 7 You need a happy dressing room and, I don't care who they are, if players are not playing they are not happy. With so many players there will be big names nowhere near the team at times, and that can cause big problems — it won't be easy to manage. I also worry they lack a bit of leadership still — what they would give to have a John Terry-type in the squad. A proper captain and leader on the pitch. Where are they in this Chelsea squad? There aren't many about but the proper title contenders have them in players like Kop skipper Van Dijk. We have to mention Manchester City and Pep Guardiola — you can never write them off but there are questions. They will miss Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker, Rodri is still not quite fit and there are always worries over whether John Stones can be available — he's a fantastic player. Outside the title contenders, I fancy Tottenham to be a dark horse after a horrible season last time out. They looked good against Paris Saint-Germain in the main and have a strong squad if they can stay fit. 7 7
