James Cameron: "Avatar: Fire and Ash" Will Be a Little Bit Longer Than "The Way of Water"
James Cameron's next 'Avatar' movie, 'Fire and Ash,' will be longer than 2022's 'The Way of Water,' which clocked in at three hours and 12 minutes.
In a recent sitdown with Empire, Cameron revealed he and his writers developed too much material for 'The Way of Water,' and when production began, had to move some of the story from that movie into its sequel, 'Fire and Ash.'
'In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2,' Cameron added. 'The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren't drilling down enough on character. So I said, 'Guys, we've got to split it.'' For that reason, Cameron teased, 'movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.'
Cameron first revealed the 'Fire and Ash' title at a D23 presentation in August 2024. He didn't reveal any footage at the time. Still, he did showcase some concept art, which included giant airships, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) riding on a banshee, and a sneak peek at the Ash People of the Na'vi dancing around a blazing fire pit.
'You'll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,' Cameron said at the presentation. 'It's an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it's also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We're going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.'
Franchise stars Sam Worthington and Saldaña will reprise their characters from the first two 'Avatar' movies for 'Fire and Ash,' returning alongside Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, and Dileep Rao.
New cast members for 'Fire and Ash' include Oona Chaplin, who will play the leader of the Ash People, and David Thewlis. Specific plot details remain under wraps, but 'Fire and Ash' will pick up soon after the events of 'Way of Water.'

Warner Bros. Sets Release Dates for "Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum", New "Evil Dead" Movie
Yara Sameh Gollum will return to the big screen in Christmas 2027. Warner Bros. has announced that Andy Serkis' 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum' will open in theaters December 17, 2027. The studio has also dated the next 'Evil Dead' movie, starring Souheila Yacoub, for July 24, 2026, and M. Night Shyamalan's 'Remain' for October 23, 2026. Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters star in Shyamalan's latest project. The release date for 'The Hunt for Gollum' is hardly a surprise given all six movies in Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' film trilogies opened in December ahead of the Christmas holiday. Each trilogy powered to $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office. Warner Bros. first announced 'The Hunt for Gollum' last summer and said it would be ready for theaters in 2026. The film has been delayed a year. Serkis is directing the tentpole and once again starring in the title role, which he's been playing via motion capture since 2002's 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.' Serkis' directorial efforts include 'Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle' and 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage.' Original 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the new movie. Warner Bros. stressed when announcing 'Gollum' that the trio 'will be involved every step of the way.' Boyens told Empire magazine that 'The Hunt for Gollum' is 'quite an intense story' that 'falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria. It's a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.' Original 'Rings' cast members like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have all expressed interest in returning for the new film should the story make sense for their characters to appear, although no additional casting has been confirmed. 'The Lord of the Rings' franchise was last in theaters in December 2024 with the release of the anime movie 'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.' 'Gollum' will be the first live-action 'Rings' movie since 2014's 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. James Gunn Updates Fans on "Avatar: Fire And Ash" Progress
Yara Sameh Acclaimed Canadian filmmaker James Cameron has shared a promising update about the status of "Avatar: Fire And Ash", teasing that progress on his threequel is 'well ahead of the curve.' Speaking to Empire ahead of the holiday weekend, the Oscar winner said the blockbuster's post-production process, a two-year-long endeavor beginning in late 2023 that he deemed 'hectic,' will keep in time with a planned December 19 release date. 'It's in strong shape, I think,' he said. 'We've doubled the number of shots finished at this stage of the game than we had on movie two [and] the films are about equal length. So that puts us well ahead of the curve, which is something I've never, frankly, experienced before.' Cameron added that this go-around is 'a little bit less nightmarish. We're getting to the point where we're actually getting good at this.' In tandem with Cameron's penchant for experimentation in the movie and reliance on new technology to shoot elaborate water sequences, the Titanic helmer promised 'really clever action set-pieces' that'll 'get your blood up.' He promised a 'level of character and intrigue' as of yet unseen in the previous two installments. 'We're just starting to riff on it and twist it and turn it,' Cameron said, referencing the planned installments of Avatar 4 and 5. 'It's a tricky thing. We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everybody who looks at it goes, 'F—, that's not what I signed up for.' But if you're not making brave choices, you're wasting everybody's time and money. That alone is not sufficient to create success, but it's necessary. You've got to break the mold every fricking time.' While details on the forthcoming sci-fi flick remain scarce, Disney unveiled new concept art at Brazil's D23 Expo in November. Early in 2023, Cameron teased about the introduction of two new Na'vi tribes and, of course, a focal point on the element of fire. Stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña are expected to return to form in Fire and Ash, along with other cast members from The Way of Water. Though, don't expect Michelle Yeoh until Avatar 4 and beyond.
