F1 British GP live updates: Silverstone qualifying next, Bearman handed huge penalty for pit lane crash
Silverstone hosts Round 12 of the 2025 Formula One world championship this weekend, with the iconic British Grand Prix.
Lando Norris closed the gap on his McLaren teammate in the drivers' championship standings with a supreme win in Austria last weekend. The Brit also topped the free practice timings yesterday, leading FP2 with a 1:25.816.
But there is a challenge coming from Ferrari this weekend, triggered by Lewis Hamilton's FP1-leading lap of 1:26.892 and then with Charles Leclerc fastest in FP3 earlier today (1:25.498) ahead of qualifying later.

Silverstone track breakdown: The British GP makes F1 drivers feel like jet pilots
⏰ 8:33 Session stopped. We've got some debris on the track.
⏰ 10:12 Sorry, did I forget about the Ferrari challenge for a moment?
Charles Leclerc isn't having that. He's back at the top of the timings with a 1:25.498.
Which now highlights the fact Lewis Hamilton is more than eight-tenths off that time, back in P11 right now.
⏰ 14:07 It's getting fun now. Charles Leclerc's leading time of 1:25.922 is beaten by Lando Norris.
Then Oscar Piastri does likewise, with a 1:25.566 that is the quickest lap of the weekend so far.
Max Verstappen wrestles everything out of his Red Bull for a trip — and splits the two McLarens.
The top three cars are all within four-hundredths of a second. Boy, does this bode well for qualifying.
⏰ 17:56 It's getting testy out there. Now Liam Lawson and Peirre Gasly have a bit of an exchange on track.
Lawson is onto the radio to shoot off, but it's Lawson's actions that have been noted by Race Control for driving erratically.
⏰ 19:58 Alex Albon channels his inner Max Verstappen and gets frustrated with a meandering Lance Stroll on the racing line.
In fairness, the Canadian deserved it.
⏰ 21:52 Credit here for Oliver Bearman, another Brit at his home race, who is currently P6 and within seven-tenths of the quickest time this season.
Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc says there is a little bit of rain around Copse. A little reminder there that summer in the UK means nothing in terms of weather reliability.
⏰ 24:31 Max Verstappen is back on the radio complaining about his brakes. He has also waved at Pierre Gasly for what he felt was the Alpine getting in his way on a flying lap.
Still, the Dutchman is closest to Charles Leclerc's session-leading time. Getty Images
⏰ 31:47 More cars means more can be read into the times, and right now that Ferrari potential is shining through again.
Charles Leclerc is fastest, just clocking a 1:25.922 — although still a tenth shy of Lando Norris' quickest time yesterday.
Max Verstappen, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli complete the current top four.
McLaren at the moment look a little off it.
⏰ 36:12 A moment for Lance Stroll at Woodcote, as the rear of his Aston Martin starts stepping out — and so begins a battle to keep the car pointing forward.
He manages it, but the lap is done and the tires are wrecked from a peak performance perspective.
And just like that, we also have timed laps for all 20 cars and 17 of them out on track right now.
⏰ 42:01 We're still a little light on cars in FP3. We're up to six drivers with a timed lap now.
But there are a lot of drivers heading out, including Lando Norris' McLaren.
And there's a lovely moment as Norris gives a big wave to the Landostand at Stowe, as he cruises around on his out lap.
Huge support here for the Brit this weekend, in particular.
Actually, I wonder how Lewis Hamilton feels about there being a Landostand… Getty Images
⏰ 49:12 Slow going, this FP3 so far. Only three cars have completed a timed lap, and two of them are Alpines.
The other is Lewis Hamilton.
All of those runs have been on the soft tire — which will come into its own in qualifying later, of course.
⏰ 54:18 Zak Brown currently speaking to Sky Sports from the pit wall, confirmed he did indeed clock how many marbles there were out on the circuit when he did his lap in that iconic Williams car.
Hence the delay in the start to FP3.
All calm after yesterday's practice at McLaren — but Brown definitely has eyes on Ferrari today and tomorrow, saying its one-lap and longer stint pace is impressive.
He clearly sees the red cars as contenders to win at Silverstone this weekend.
⏰ 59:59 Delay done, green lights at the end of the pit lane and Alpine cars swiftly on the track.
FP3 is underway!
There were a few classic cars taken around the Silverstone track ahead of FP3 — including McLaren CEO Zak Brown driving Nigel Mansell's 1987 Williams F1 charger.
And it sounds like that may be responsible for the extra rubber out there, as well as our slight delay.
As for the weather, it looks much cooler but just as windy at Silverstone — if not more so.
The direction could well flip between today and tomorrow too. So many challenges for these teams.
Now then… Race Control has stated the start of FP3 will be delayed.
But no word on how long or why — although there are still marshals out on the track clearing loads of 'marbles' from the track.
'Marbles' being small pieces of rubber that come off the tires as they degrade around the track.
And now it is confirmed — the delay will only be five minutes.
One more hour of rehearsals left — and it starts in five minutes.
LET'S GO… Formula 1
It's not quite double the points tally of its nearest rival, but McLaren isn't far off it now.
To be honest, there won't be anyone else winning the constructors' championship this season in my view — which I first declared yesterday. And yes, I know we're not even halfway through the schedule.
The real fun is behind them, with Ferrari just a point ahead of Mercedes and Red Bull still no nearer finding a point-scoring second driver behind Max Verstappen.
There is also only one point between Haas in P7 and Aston Martin behind, while Sauber just two points further back (26).
Alpine remains the real struggler, stuck on 11 points at the back of the field and desperate for better. Quickly. Formula 1
It's looking tight at the top — but you can see why it's all about McLaren and no one else.
Oscar Piastri's lead is now down to 15 points from Lando Norris, with the pair way clear of Max Verstappen in third.
Below Lewis Hamilton, you will find Kimi Antonelli (63 points) while Nico Hulkenberg's 22 points and P10 in his Sauber is arguably the performance of the season so far.
Alpine's Franco Colapinto (like the driver he replaced after six races, Jack Doohan) is the only driver on the grid this weekend yet to pick up a championship point. Getty Images
We have less than 30 minutes to wait for the final hour of free practice at Silverstone this weekend.
You'll hear plenty from our correspondents and editors, both trackside and following all the action from further afield — and we very much want to hear from you too.

Marcus Trescothick says England ‘not stupid enough' to dismiss draw
England are 'not stupid enough' to chase victory at all costs on the final day of the Edgbaston Test, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick hinting they would welcome a rare draw against India. In three years since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over as captain and coach, England have become the masters of all-or-nothing cricket and turned the draw into an endangered species. Advertisement There has been just one in 37 games since the advent of 'Bazball' – a rain-shortened Ashes clash in Manchester – with Stokes going on the record on numerous occasions with his disdain for stalemates. It would be fantastical for England to harbour realistic ideas of turning their overnight score of 72 for three into a winning score of 608 on Sunday – not mention a world record by the small matter of 190 runs. Trescothick was careful not to squash the prospect entirely but broke what has become a minor taboo in the camp by recognising that avoiding defeat could be an acceptable result. Advertisement 'We're always trying to be as positive as we can, but we all appreciate it's a hell of a lot of runs to try and score,' he said. 'We need 536 tomorrow…I don't think we've seen scoring rates like that. I don't think we use that sort of (defensive) language, that's not the sort of changing room we are. But we are not naive. 'If you get to the point where you can draw the game, of course, we're not stupid enough to think that you have to just win or lose. There are three results possible in every game that you play. 'This has kind of been built up away from what the changing room messages are. I think there is a perception of what you think goes on in the changing room, but we obviously understand it a little bit more.' Advertisement The levels of faith among England fans have risen so much that the Hollies Stand stood as one to a chorus of 'stand up if you still believe', even after India began dismantling the top order on the fourth evening. 'We were all stood up in the changing room,' Trescothick said with a smile. 'We have done some things in our time. We are different to how we've done things before, so we'll see what happens.' India surprised many onlookers by setting the target at such an outlandish level, delaying a declaration many felt would come long before Shubman Gill belatedly called time on the innings at 427 for six. Advertisement Bowling coach Morne Morkel admitted the timing had been a matter of debate but feels the English appetite for embracing unlikely chases will still remain. 'We did talk about it a lot during the day, I guess if a team does score 500 plus on the final day they deserve to win,' he said. 'Harry Brook said in the media the other day that they'd go at anything we set for them, so I think we're in for an exciting day. 'Harry is a guy who likes to take the game on and he's an entertainer. That's their style. If they're happy to take it on, that's great for the game.'

Official: Real Madrid starting lineup against Borussia Dortmund
Real Madrid will square off against Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup in a few minutes. Ahead of the game, winners of which will face PSG in the semi-finals, Xabi Alonso has announced the starting lineup for Real Madrid. Advertisement Once again, the Real Madrid boss has made no changes, meaning Kylian Mbappe is left out on the bench despite having recovered from gastroenteritis. Instead, it is Gonzalo Garcia who gets the nod in attack alongside Vinicius Jr. The midfield unit sees Arda Guler start along with Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, and Aurelien Tchouameni, who will drop into the defensive line depending on game-states. Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, and Fran Garcia form the backline in front of Thibaut Courtois. Rodrygo remains on the bench for another match as uncertainty lingers over his future.

Shelton breaks Fucsovics
Follow live coverage from day six at The Championships as the sport's biggest stars, including Skinner, Djokovic and Shelton, shine and advance Getty Images The stars were out on day six of the 2025 Wimbledon Championship and they all left little doubt en route to victories. No. 1 Jannik Sinner made light work of his match against Spain's Pedro Martinez with a straight sets win. Mirra Andreeva (7) also won her match in straight sets against USA's Hailey Baptiste. Emma Navarro (10) outlasted 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíková and Iga Świątek (8) eased past Danielle Collins in straight sets. To conclude today's festivities, Novak Djokovic (6) and American Ben Shelton (10) powered past their respective opponents in straight sets as they were loudly supported by Wimbledon's faithful. Get involved: live@ Shelton 3-1* Fucsovics While it's always fun to watch Shelton's shotmaking, his enthusiasm is unmatched. He rips a forehand down the line to break Fucsovics' serve and lets out a roar just minutes into this match. Getty Images FINAL: de Minaur 6-4, 7-6(7), 6-3 Holmgren No. 11 Alex de Minaur gets it done in straight sets, defeating August Holmgren. He now awaits the winner of Miomir Kecmanovic and Novak Djokovic. Shelton 2-1* Fucsovics Neither player has dropped a point when serving yet as Shelton leads 2-1 in the first set. There is a brief medical timeout as Fucsovics has an injury to his right middle finger that is tended to by the medical staff. Miomir Kecmanovic and Novak Djokovic take Centre Court to close out day six at Wimbledon. Shelton 1-0* Fucsovics Away we go as Ben Shelton faces Márton Fucsovics. The American starts with the serve and quickly takes the first game. This match has been pushed back a while but Ben Shelton and Márton Fucsovics are finally taking the grass. Both players played briefly yesterday after their matches on Thursday were postponed due to darkness. You might be surprised when you hear what one of Iga Świątek's favorite meals is... Barbora Krejčíková was not feeling her best today but still put forth a gutsy effort on the grass. The crowd repaid her with a standing ovation as she left the court. Getty Images FINAL: Świątek 6-2, 6-3 Collins No. 8 Iga Świątek won 61 of 103 points, beating Danielle Collins in straight sets to advance the fourth round. She will face No. 23 Clara Tauson next, who eliminated No. 11 Elena Rybakina in straight sets earlier today. Getty Images FINAL: Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 3-6 Navarro Navarro has triple match point but Krejčíková pulls out a beautiful backhand, ripping it down the line. However, on the next point, Krejčíková fires a return shot into the net and that will do it. Gutsy effort from last year's champion but ultimately Navarro prevailed to advance. Getty Images Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 3-5* Navarro This is a tough scene... After Krejčíková drops the point, she takes a moment to herself near the back wall and appears to be in tears, clearly not feeling her best. The crowd gives her a cheer of support. Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 3-4* Navarro Another game, another break. Krejčíková is persevering but she does not look like herself. She gets a double fault and then moment later, she pushes a backhand wide to drop the point. Critical game coming up here. Getty Images Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, *3-3 Navarro Whatever is plaguing Krejčíková is visible yet she somehow mustered the ability to break Navarro to even this deciding set 3-3. She looks a step slower and her shot is not as powerful but she continues to battle. FINAL: Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7) Ofner Grigor Dimitrov is through to the fourth round where he will face the No. 1 seeded Jannik Sinner. Dimitrov recorded 15 aces in his win today, which was his 100th Grand Slam win. Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 2-3* Navarro Another break, this time for Navarro. Holding double break point, she blasts a backhand down the line that gave Krejčíková no chance of returning the shot. After the game, Krejčíková was examined by the medical staff after feeling faint. Moments later, she grabs her racket and returns to the court. Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, *2-2 Navarro After having her serve broken, Krejčíková returns the favor. Navarro attempts to play a dropshot just over the net but unfortunately for her, the shot just does not have enough power. This match could come down to the wire. FINAL: Alexandrova 6-3, 7-6 (7) Sönmez Impressive showing by Ekaterina Alexandrova to advance past Zeynep Sönmez in straight sets, though the second one required a tiebreak. She excelled returning serve, winning 33 receiving points and going 4-6 on break points. Barbora Krejčíková has just missed five break points on the Emma Navarro serve to open up a 2-0 lead at the start of the third and final set. Instead Navarrro holds and the defending champion is now 3/14 on break points. It gets worse for Krejčíková as she's broken to love in the next game, and having been a set and a break up is now on the brink of elimination. Getty Images Świątek 6-2, 0-0* Collins In 39 minutes, Iga Świątek has taken the opening set against Danielle Collins. Everything has gone the former world No. 1's way as Collins ended up slipping and landing on the ground a couple of times in that set. Some 13 unforced errors from the American show where she can improve heading into the second set. She has gone off court for a short break.
