Kilglass NS represents Sligo in ‘Our World Awards' as Irish Aid celebrates 20 years of the national awards programme
This year, Sligo primary schools were encouraged to learn about the lives of children and their families in Mozambique, Somalia, and The Lao People's Democratic Republic, also known as Laos, focusing on how Ireland and 192 other countries are working together to create a better future for all through support for the 17 UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
Kilglass NS in Enniscrone proudly represented County Sligo in this year's Our World Awards from Irish Aid, submitting a thoughtful and creative entry that highlighted their learning about Irish Aid and the UN Global Goals.
It was the 6th class pupils who led the project, creating a beautiful, eye-catching poster that reflected both their artistic talents and their understanding of global issues. Through vibrant artwork, they showcased what they had learned about the important work being carried out by Irish Aid around the world.
Open to primary school pupils from 3rd to 6th class across the country, the Our World Awards encourages children to explore important global themes such as climate action, equality and international development, while reflecting on Ireland's role in creating positive change.
Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD expressed his delight at the number of schools taking part in this year's awards.
'This year saw an impressive rise in the number of entries for the Our World Awards. This response highlights the growing emphasis on Global Citizenship Education in our primary schools, which is very encouraging," he said.
Judging is now underway and shortlisted schools will be invited to the National Final taking place at the Printworks, Dublin Castle on Friday 30th May 2025 where their entries will be celebrated and the Our World Awards School of the Year, 2025 will be announced.

Africa Day to be celebrated with events across Louth
Africa Day is the annual worldwide celebration of the people, cultures, and potential of the African continent. This year, Louth will join all 31 local authorities in Ireland in hosting inclusive, vibrant events that highlight African heritage, identity, and creativity. Ardee is the venue for One Africa, Many Voices: Inspiring Change, which takes place on Saturday, May 24 This event will feature dance performances, a fashion show, poetry, music, and cuisine representing each African country. Threads of Africa: Fashion, Style, Story and Sustainability, a day-long programme including a panel discussion on fashion, identity and sustainability, an interactive audience Q&A, an upcycling and textile workshop, a clothes swapping corner, and a live African fashion show. also takes place on Saturday, from 2pm-5pm at St Fechin's GAA Club, Termonfeckin. Africa Day Celebration and African Cultural Arts Exhibition takes place at Geraldines GAA Club, Haggardstown on Sunday May 25 from 4pm-7pm. This family-friendly event will include a Congolese cultural show, guest speakers on African history and literature, a special African poem presented by three children, South African dance performances, a fashion parade, and an exhibition of African visual art. 'Africa Day is an opportunity to promote those links and learn more about African cultures,' Minister Neale Richmond said at the launch in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. 'I am delighted that local authorities across Ireland, including Louth, will be taking part in Africa Day 2025, and I look forward to vibrant celebrations nationwide.'

Bray People Wicklow celebrated Africa Day in style on a glorious day in Burnaby Park, Greystones, on Saturday, May 17. Under the warm sun, it was a vibrant celebration of African culture, music, dance, community and of course, some great food. DJ Spaqz was on the decks to deliver the beats, while live band Sli na Croi kept things lively all day. The event was free and celebrated African culture, our growing links across the continent, as well as the positive impact of the African diaspora in Wicklow. The Department of Foreign Affairs partnered with all 31 local authorities to host Africa Day this year, and remarking on the success, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, said: 'It was fantastic to see thousands of people come together to celebrate the growing relationship between Ireland and Africa. Through development cooperation, expanding economic and political links, and vibrant cultural exchange, Ireland's ties with African countries continue to deepen.'

Kerry's African community to showcase cultures and traditions at major celebration
The Kingdom's African community will come together at the park and members will showcase their different cultures and traditions. The event will celebrate traditional African food and drumming and those from the continent, now living in Kerry, will don their traditional dress. African-themed displays will also be setup in the park. The family-friendly day is open to everyone of all ages, no matter where they are from. A DJ will provide music while there will be face-painting, bouncy castles and plenty of games on hand to keep youngsters entertained. The Africa Day celebration has been organised by Tralee International Resource Centre, Killarney Immigrant Support Centre and the African Community in Kerry. Manager of Tralee International Resource Centre, Mary Carroll, said the day will be an opportunity to celebrate African diversity and success and join the millions around the world highlighting the cultural and social energy of the continent. 'Importantly it will support integration and inclusion by bringing different cultures and communities together,' Ms Carroll said. 'This type of initiative is more than just good fun, it is about raising awareness and encouraging integration as the different communities come together,' she continued. 'Music, games and food is a fun way to achieve this very important goal. It makes us realise what we have in common; we all have families, we enjoy our children having a fun day out, we like nice food, music and laughter is appreciated by us all. 'This is our fourth time holding an event like this, and each year it gets bigger and better! In the past years it was wonderful to see so many people coming to try African food, and learning so much about the different cultures, and meeting and talking together, in a fun way.' ADVERTISEMENT The celebration, which was officially launched this week, is supported by funding from Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, facilitated through Kerry County Council. The organisers said they are very grateful for the use of Tralee Town Park and for all the help from local groups and businesses including Sean Murphy Electrical contractor. Africa Day in Tralee Town Park will run from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, May 25.
