
Becoming a father changes your brain
It's not only mothers who experience profound changes around the birth of a child; fathers also show measurable adjustments in brain structure and hormone balance, according to new research led by professor of psychology Dr Darby Saxbe at the University of Southern California in the United States.
Results from brain scans show that the cortex – the part of the brain responsible for higher cognitive functions – also changes in fathers, explains the director of the university's Neuroendocrinology of Social Ties (NEST) Lab in the American Psychological Association (APA) podcast Speaking of Psychology .
The changes are more subtle than in mothers, but nevertheless detectable, and they appear to promote the fathers' ability to care.
There are also changes in hormone levels.
The testosterone levels of many fathers fall after the birth, something associated with a higher motivation to look after the baby, she explains.
Less testosterone can mean more closeness to the child, as well as a better quality of relationship during the transition to parenthood.
At the same time, it was shown that partners of fathers with lower testosterone reported fewer depressive symptoms, provided that the relationship was good.
Poor sleep is a constant companion of young parents.
According to Prof Saxbe's research, lack of sleep is a consequence rather than a cause of brain changes.
Those who are particularly involved in caring for the baby often sleep less well, but the brain seems to want to 'remodel' itself precisely for this purpose.
Her research also suggests that fatherhood is a real 'development window' for the brain, comparable to adolescence or childhood.
'Every window of change is a window of vulnerability, but it's also a window of opportunity,' says the professor, whose book Dad Brain is due to be published next year (2026).
Anyone who initially feels that they are unable to concentrate like they used to need not worry immediately.
This is because children boost their parents' memory: they sharpen their cognitive skills and parents have 'more ability to remember and retrieve things' that are related to the child.
Another key finding: fathers who take parental leave benefit, but mothers benefit even more.
They sleep better, are less stressed and show fewer depressive symptoms, Prof Saxbe's research showed.
'It was really the mums that had the biggest benefit.'
Paternity leave is something that not only benefits parents, but the whole family.
'We know it has benefits for the children.
'We also know that it's beneficial for the partner.
'And I think that anything you can do to take the pressure off the family system is also a way of managing stress.' – dpa

The study mapped an entire catalogue of infectious diseases by analysing DNA of bones and teeth from 1,313 individuals who lived across Europe and Asia (Eurasia) from the Early Stone Age, around 12,500 years ago, to about 200 years ago, with the oldest sample dating as far back as 37,000 years ago. The study detected the world's oldest genetic trace of Yersinia pestis, the plague bacterium, in a sample dating back 5,500 years. France probes authorities over failure to stop doctor's child abuse
PARIS: The French judiciary has launched an investigation into the failure of authorities to check on a hospital doctor who continued abusing nearly 300, mostly underaged, patients for over a period of 25 years, before he was convicted, reported German Press Agency (dpa). The investigation is being conducted into "intentional failure to prevent crimes and offences against the physical integrity of persons," said prosecutor Stéphane Schellenberger on Friday in the western town of Lorient. Joël Le Scouarnec, a retired doctor, was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the end of May after confessing to abusing a total of 158 male and 141 female patients, with the average age of his victims being 11, between 1989 and 2014. The investigation does not target specific individuals, but instead probes into the steps taken by the health authorities, clinic managers, and other medical staff in connection with the abuse. It remains unclear why the health authorities failed to stop the abuse, despite the doctor having already received a suspended sentence concerning a child pornography case in 2005. Some of the perpetrator's colleagues had raised the alarm, but the surgeon had moved to another hospital without facing disciplinary action.

Is instant coffee bad for your eyes?
New research finds a link between instant coffee – but not other types of coffee – and an incurable condition that causes blindness. — dpa A new study suggests that drinking instant coffee could raise the risk of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a major cause of vision loss in older adults. Interestingly, the study, published in the journal Food Science & Nutrition , found no similar risk with ground coffee, decaffeinated (decaf) coffee, or total coffee intake. 'AMD is a leading cause of vision loss among the elderly in developed countries,' study corresponding author Dr Liu Siwei from the Department of Ophthalmology of Hubei University of Medicine's Shiyan Taihe Hospital in China told Medical News Today . 'As there is currently no cure, identifying new modifiable factors is crucial for slowing disease progression, preserving vision and improving patients' quality of life.' The researchers used the data of over 500,000 participants from the UK Biobank genome-wide association studies summary statistics. They applied a method called Mendelian randomisation, which uses genetic differences to study cause and effect, similar to a clinical trial. 'Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide and is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants that may offer neuroprotective effects,' Dr Liu explained. 'At the same time, growing evidence shows that genetics influence dietary preferences. 'Studying the genetic predisposition to coffee consumption and its relationship with AMD risk may help reveal potential causal links between diet and eye diseases.' The researchers believe that the increased risk may come from chemical changes, additives or byproducts formed during the processing of instant coffee – things that are not found in freshly-brewed coffee. However, the team noted some limitations to their study, like using mostly European data and not having detailed information about different coffee types. – dpa
