Gerik crash: Driver advised not to make any statements to avoid interfering police investigation

By: Bernama Text Size: Filepic of the crash site by Bernama IPOH: Police have advised the bus driver involved in the crash along the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Gerik, which claimed 15 lives two days ago, not to make any statements to any party. Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said this is to avoid a situation that could interfere with the police investigation.
Advertisement He said the 39-year-old driver is currently being treated at the Taiping Hospital. "The statements by the bus driver could raise various other speculations. Although this country allows freedom of speech, I want him to be patient until it is his turn to give his statement," he told a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), here, today. The crash, which occurred last Monday, involved a chartered bus carrying Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Upsi) students travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The bus overturned at KM53 of the JRTB, near Tasik Banding, Gerik, resulting in the loss of 15 lives. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers of the Perodua Alza involved in the collision. Noor Hisam said the police would record the driver's statement after being allowed to do so by the hospital. He said the police had so far recorded the statements of 18 witnesses, including the UPSI students who were involved in the accident. "We are conducting a detailed investigation which also involves several agencies, including the Perak Malaysian Chemical Department, the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM) to determine the exact cause of the accident," he said. Freelancer fined RM20,000 for selling obscene content
SEPANG: A freelancer was fined RM20,000 by the Sessions Court here today after pleading guilty to distributing obscene and sexually explicit videos for commercial purposes in February last year. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman handed down the sentence to Ahmad Ali Madali, 40, and ordered a six-month jail term in default of payment. Based on the facts of the case, a check on the mobile phone used by the accused revealed a Touch 'n Go e-wallet transaction history of RM400 made to him by the undercover agent. Ahmad Fuad said the offence had a significant impact on public morality and was contrary to Islamic values and the Rukun Negara principles. 'Society today is becoming increasingly indecent, and if this trend continues, it will lead to serious problems. Public morality must be upheld, and such activities must be appropriately punished,' he said. The charge was handled by MCMC prosecuting officer Mohamad Azmir Mohd Razali, while the accused was unrepresented. Pleading for leniency, Ahmad Adli said that he had no fixed income, was supporting his wife and three-year-old child, and was paying for his father-in-law's medical expenses. However, the prosecution urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on Ahmad Ali, citing the severity of the offence and its negative impact on society, noting that children could potentially access the videos. The accused then paid the fine.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said one of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. "In the past, one high-profile case could take us about one and a half years to complete the investigation papers, but now we can complete them within six months. Secondly, we enhance our officers' skills and knowledge. "About 10 years ago, we needed to dispatch many officers to conduct surveillance. But now, we just use technology to locate suspects and witnesses. So, in a very short period, we can locate the suspect or the person we want to find,' he said. The most important thing is our approach,' he said, adding that during the same period, 5,145 investigation papers were opened, leading to the arrest of 5,703 individuals. He said that out of these arrests, 2,479 individuals were prosecuted and 1,274 were subsequently convicted in court. The MACC also recorded significant financial enforcement outcomes, including the seizure of RM3.54 billion in assets and the forfeiture of an additional RM27.87 billion.
