The Hindu Bureau Coimbatore The Coimbatore City has secured the 28th position in the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, the nationwide cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. This marks a significant improvement from its 35th rank in 2023, and the city now holds the top position in Tamil Nadu among cities with over 10 lakh population. The Swachh Survekshan, launched in 2014, is conducted annually to assess urban local bodies on various sanitation and waste management parameters. In the latest edition, Coimbatore scored 8,347 out of 12,500 points. Among Tamil Nadu's major cities in the same category, Chennai ranked 38th with 6,822 points and Madurai 40th with 4,823 points. Coimbatore also received the ODF++ certification, an upgrade from its previous ODF status. This certification indicates that the city not only ensures there is no open defecation and maintains clean and functional public toilets, but also has effective systems in place for the safe collection, treatment, and disposal of faecal waste, including in areas not connected to sewer networks. This year's ranking was based on performance across several key indicators such as door-to-door waste collection, source segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, cleanliness in residential and commercial areas, maintenance of water bodies under the Corporation's limits, and public awareness and involvement in sanitation efforts. The civic body attributed the improvement to focused initiatives in waste management, community engagement, and the sustained efforts of sanitation workers and officials.
