How to save money on your food shop
Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save hundreds of pounds a year:
Odd boxes - plenty of retailers offer slightly misshapen fruit and veg or surplus food at a discounted price.
Lidl sells five kilos of fruit and veg for just £1.50 through its Waste Not scheme while Aldi shoppers can get Too Good to Go bags which contain £10 worth of all kinds of products for £3.30.
Sainsbury's also sells £2 "Taste Me, Don't Waste Me" fruit and veg boxes to help shoppers reduced food waste and save cash.
Food waste apps - food waste apps work by helping shops, cafes, restaurants and other businesses shift stock that is due to go out of date and passing it on to members of the public.
Some of the most notable ones include Too Good to Go and Olio.
Too Good to Go's app is free to sign up to and is used by millions of people across the UK, letting users buy food at a discount.
Olio works similarly, except users can collect both food and other household items for free from neighbours and businesses.
Yellow sticker bargains - yellow sticker bargains, sometimes orange and red in certain supermarkets, are a great way of getting food on the cheap.
But what time to head out to get the best deals varies depending on the retailer. You can see the best times for each supermarket here.
Super cheap bargains - sign up to bargain hunter Facebook groups like Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK where shoppers regularly post hauls they've found on the cheap, including food finds.
"Downshift" - you will almost always save money going for a supermarket's own-brand economy lines rather than premium brands.
The move to lower-tier ranges, also known as "downshifting" and hailed by consumer expert Martin Lewis, could save you hundreds of pounds a year on your food shop.

Aldi fans can now get a tattoo in stores that look like Specialbuys

Designs include air fryers, kayaks, hanging egg chairs and the viral Pilates machine - all seen in the middle aisle Aldi has unveiled the UK's first-ever batch of tattoos designed to look like several popular Specialbuy items customers can get during their food shop. The supermarket created the tattoos to celebrate some of its most iconic, customer-favourite items from the middle aisle that many shoppers often can't resist browsing. ‌ Research commissioned by Aldi has revealed that the younger generations are rejecting the traditional view that tattoos must be a permanent commitment. The study of 2,000 Brits found two-fifths (43%) Gen Z'ers believe tattoos are part of an "evolving canvas" that can be updated and refreshed over time. ‌ Up to 45% of Brits would even consider getting a tattoo related to a brand or product they genuinely love. Over half (57%) of Gen Z and Millennials admit they see tattoos as a fashion accessory rather than a permanent commitment. ‌ Amongst those with tattoos, a third (36%) of inked Brits have wanted to remove old tattoos or looked for ways to hide or create new works from their current ones. The survey also revealed Brits' fear of tattoo regret, and over half of the nation (58%) have considered using temporary tattoos as an alternative. The research comes as Aldi reveals its bizarre tattoo collection, celebrating customers' obsession with the supermarket's ever-changing Specialbuy range. The popular aisle gets refreshed every Thursday and Sunday, offering an eclectic mix of items alongside the weekly food shop. ‌ Full list of temporary tattoos available at Aldi: Pilates Machine Hanging Egg Chair Kamado BBQ Kayak Air Fryer Garden Tool Shed Lawn Mower Paddling Pool Aldimania Sliders Stand Mixer From everyday essentials that become instant sell-outs to bizarre seasonal items that spark social media frenzies, each tattoo design represents a product that has achieved fame among Aldi shoppers. One of the newest successes to be given the tattoo treatment is a Pilates machine. When it launched in Australia last year, the Pilates machine took the internet by storm. British shoppers were given the chance to grab a Reformer Pilates Machine for £149.99, which saw queues form outside the supermarkets on launch day. ‌ Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: "Our shoppers love our middle aisle — with products often going viral across social media and selling out fast. Now, thanks to our brand-new tattoos, shoppers can show off just how much they love Aldi Specialbuys!' For those looking to (semi-) permanently commemorate their love for the middle aisle, shoppers can enter to win a selection of these limited edition Specialbuy tattoos by emailing their name and date of birth to specialbuytattoos@ Competition entries can be submitted from midnight on August 6, 2025, to 11.59pm on August 22, 2025. Full terms and conditions apply.

David Beckham helps Hugo Boss score higher sales - despite consumers feeling reluctant to spend

David Beckham has boosted menswear sales for Hugo Boss despite consumers feeling reluctant to spend. The German fashion retailer said sales grew 1 per cent to £870million over the second quarter of the year after the former England football captain launched his first collection with the brand in the spring. The range of casual and formal wear helped sales in Hugo Boss's menswear division rise 2 per cent to £690million. Chief executive Daniel Grieder said: 'The successful launch of our Beckham X BOSS collection in April is just one example of how we are continuing to drive brand momentum, even in a volatile environment.' But he did acknowledge that trading had been 'marked by a challenging macroeconomic and industry environment'. Beckham has followed in the footsteps of his fashion designer wife Victoria, who recently partnered with High Street fashion chain Mango.

Formula 1's George Russell shares a steamy smooch with his bikini-clad girlfriend Carmen Montero Mundt on romantic Italian yacht trip

shared a steamy smooch with his bikini-clad girlfriend Carmen Montero Mundt on a romantic yacht trip in Sardinia, Italy on Monday. The Mercedes Formula One driver jetted off on a relaxing Italian getaway before he returns for the Dutch Grand Prix after a three week summer break. The loved-up couple looked completely smitten as they larked around during watersports. George and Carmen packed on the PDA later in the day after a fun-filled day in the sun. The shirtless hunk showcased her ripped physique in navy swimshorts, while Carmen flashed her abs in a skimpy yellow bikini. The 27-year-old first came across fashion influencer Carmen, when the Spaniard had been set to meet a friend of his for a date in 2020. 'My mate couldn't make it, so I thought I'll swing along to see how it goes,' Russell told The Sun. 'She told me she's from the south of Spain and she wouldn't ever expect someone to know the small place she's from. 'I knew exactly where she was from, so it was quite coincidental.' The pair quickly bonded, with George having spent a significant amount of time in the city of Jerez in southern Spain where Carmen hails from during his karting days. However, while Carmen has now become one of George's biggest supporters, faithfully following his globe trotting exploits, she was not initially aware of his profession. He continued: 'I'm so fortunate with Carmen because we met before the craziness of F1. We met organically and it wasn't a set up. 'She didn't know who I was, she didn't know F1 and wasn't even bothered by any of that. She is a very down-to-earth individual and we share values. 'She's such a hard worker, wants to achieve so much and she really recognises what it takes in my position to be at this level. Having her on this journey means an awful lot to me because even though we are living our dream it can be a lonely lifestyle. The shirtless hunk showcased her ripped physique in navy swimshorts, while Carmen flashed her abs in a skimpy yellow bikini George and Carmen showed off their impressive skills There had been some nagging doubts about his future with the constructor but George is set for a bumper payday, more than doubling his current £12m-a-year package The pair put on a tactile display 'Having somebody to help you disconnect from that actually brings performance as well.' When the pair celebrated five years together in February, Carmen detailed her pride in her partner in a post on social media. She wrote: 'Five years with the most wonderful person I could ever ask for. Forever proud of who you are and what you do.' The British Formula One star is closing in on a new Mercedes deal worth an eye-watering £30m-a-year. There had been some nagging doubts about his future with the constructor but George is set for a bumper payday, more than doubling his current £12m-a-year package. As Mail Sport's Jonathan McEvoy exclusively revealed this week, negotiations have accelerated over the last few weeks and a source close to the talks confirmed: 'All the main points have been agreed.' George's incoming raise will remain well short of Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton - each on about £60m a year. While he does not yet have the achievements or global fanbase to garner such earnings, his win in Canada and domination over team-mate Kimi Antonelli this season point to his consistent form. His net worth is currently estimated to be in the region of £15m, though clearly that is set to increase substantially in the next few years.
