Renfrew's Arkleston Road set for partial reopening after bridge crash

Daily Record26-06-2025
A traffic management plan was set to be introduced yesterday but it will now be initiated tomorrow.
The reopening of a busy Renfrew road has been delayed after 'a wrinkle in the plans' was discovered.
Arkleston Road, which acts as an access route to the busy M8, has been closed since Wednesday, June 4, after a lorry travelling westbound on the motorway crashed into the bridge.

Transport Scotland suggested an initial structural assessment of the bridge indicated significant repairs were required and would come with a potential six-month closure of the arterial route.

However, this was deemed totally unacceptable with an action plan drawn up to get the road open again. A traffic management system was settled on with yesterday expected to be the day for reopening.
But there was a late snag with Councillor John Shaw, an SNP representative for Renfrew North and Braehead, saying it will now be tomorrow when the road opens to ease the burden of motorists and the local roads network.
In a statement on social media on Tuesday, he said: 'There's been a bit of a wrinkle in the plans to partially reopen Arkleston Road Bridge tomorrow.
'The council's roads team have advised that a temporary speed restriction of 20mph is required on the bridge and, to legally enforce this, a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) needs to be in place.
'Unfortunately, that means the partial reopening will now be delayed until Friday.'
Both SNP Councillor Jim Paterson and Reform UK politician Jamie McGuire blasted the initial six-month closure prediction.

Cllr Paterson, who last week branded the move as 'not acceptable', had stated: 'Although it is not ideal to have temporary traffic management in place, it is at least positive progress from the potential six-month closure which was initially announced. I will share further updates when available.'
Meanwhile, Councillor McGuire added: 'A closure of up to six months on Arkleston Road will cause significant disruption to local residents and add pressure to surrounding routes like Renfrew Road and Paisley Road.
'I know how frustrating this will be for people trying to get to work, school, or hospital appointments. While safety has to come first, I will be exploring every option to reopen the road sooner.
'We need clear updates, a plan to manage traffic, and proper consideration for those affected.'

EXCLUSIVE: Fife Reform defector was 'passionate' anti-Brexit voter

A Fife councillor who defected to Nigel Farage's Reform UK campaigned fiercely against Brexit – and won backing from Labour's most pro-EU wing. Councillor Julie MacDougall quit Labour in 2024 after being blocked from standing as a General Election candidate. She is now in Reform, which evolved from the anti-EU Brexit Party. The Courier can reveal Ms MacDougall had publicly supported EU membership and been endorsed as an MP hopeful by Labour Movement for Europe, a pro-EU faction. 'You don't get an endorsement from them without pledging true allegiance to the EU,' a source explained. Ms MacDougall also superimposed the stars of the EU flag over her Facebook profile picture in 2020. One former party colleague described the councillor as a 'passionate' EU supporter who 'despised' Brexit. A Labour source added: 'Julie MacDougall's desperate search for relevance continues. 'Having been rejected as a Labour candidate multiple times, she is now abandoning what she previously said she believed in to try to get herself a seat with any party in any parliament that might have her. 'She has previously been strident in her pro-EU views, as a member of the Labour Movement for Europe, and even displaying an EU flag around her face in social media profile pictures. 'She needs to explain to people in her council ward why she has suddenly abandoned these views in favour of Reform, who were previously called the Brexit Party.' Ms MacDougall told The Courier she had backed Remain during the EU Referendum in 2016, and says she does not know how she would vote if the ballot was re-run. She said: 'I've always been pro-European. It's more about the fact the country has voted to leave. That's what the people of the country decided, and that's democracy. 'I accept that decision by the people that voted.' Asked how she would vote now, the councillor added: 'I haven't thought about a vote at the moment, because I don't think that's something on the table.' Ms MacDougall, whose late father John was a Labour MP in Fife, also denied accusations of careerism. 'Everyone can have their own opinion. Labour was where my heart was. Sadly, things have changed,' she added. 'Had I really wanted to progress my career, I would have joined another party years ago when other parties approached me. It's taken me till now to make my decision.' A Reform UK spokesman said: 'Unlike Labour, who continue relitigating Brexit and driving us ever closer to the EU, Councillor MacDougall is committed to a free, sovereign country that is governed by its citizens. 'We welcome anyone who shares our values of slashing immigration, cutting taxation, and building a better Britain.'

There are now four Labour councillors, three independents, five SNP and five Conservatives. At the last election in 2022, Cllr Devlin picked up the most first preference votes in the ward (1,753), followed by the SNP's Angela Convery (1,639). Cllr Cunningham and Cllr Chris Lunday, SNP, were also elected. Cllr Cunningham passed away in May at the age of 79 after a period of ill health. Following her death, council leader Owen O'Donnell, Labour, said: 'Social justice and the sense of what is right and wrong was ingrained in Betty's DNA. Cllr Cunningham was first elected in 1999 and served as Provost from 2003 to 2007. She received an OBE from the Queen in the New Year's Honours List of 2011 for services to East Renfrewshire and Malawi, where her charity, the Betty Cunningham International Trust, built a health clinic and nursery schools. Alex Salmond's north-east adviser rubbishes Nicola Sturgeon book claims

A north-east political adviser who worked closely with Alex Salmond in government claims Nicola Sturgeon has spread 'falsehoods' in her new book. Geoff Aberdein took aim at three allegations in Frankly, including that the late SNP leader was against same-sex marriage. 'That one really actually gets my goat,' he said on the Holyrood Sources podcast. Like Ms Sturgeon, he had a ring-side seat during the Mr Salmond's time as first minister. On her side of the story, Ms Sturgeon wrote: 'What started as a calm discussion very quickly descended into a shouting match. Alex very rarely raised his voice to me – or vice versa – so I knew that I had a real battle on my hands to get him to agree. He was implacably opposed. But Mr Aberdein, who went on to help set up strategic advisory firm True North in Aberdeen, says that claim was demonstrably false. Another claim he disputes is the allegation Mr Salmond did not read the pro-independence blueprint before the 2014 referendum, known as the 'white paper'. 'To suggest, as I think was the purpose of this story, that he wasn't engaged in the process of a prospectus for independence is utterly nonsense,' he added. Mr Aberdein also rejected the idea that Mr Salmond could have possibly leaked details of his own alleged sexual misconduct – something Ms Sturgeon speculated about in the run-up to her book publication. Asked if he read the memoirs, he said: 'No I haven't and no I won't.' On the excerpts he has read about, he told the podcast: 'There was falsehoods at worst, fabrications at best. 'I was brought up that you didn't speak ill of the dead. But if you are going to speak ill of the dead, at least make your claims are accurate.' The claims come days after Mr Salmond's widow, Moira Salmond, from Strichen in Aberdeenshire, is suing the Scottish Government over its botched handling of an investigation into sexual harassment allegations levelled against him. Mr Salmond died of a heart attack in North Macedonia in October last year, aged 69. He previously lodged a claim in the Court of Session alleging misfeasance – the wrongful exercise of lawful authority – by civil servants. In her book, Ms Sturgeon laments losing Mr Salmond as a friend, which she compared with a grieving process. 'I had occasional, vivid dreams in which we were still on good terms. I would wake up from these feeling utterly bereft,' she added.
