
Infant sold by parents rescued in Bargarh
Police rescued the infant from the house of a couple at Paikamal in neighbouring Bargarh district and handed it over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Titlagarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer Kalyan Behera said. She, however, said no one was detained or arrested in the case as there had been no formal complaint.
Bolangir district CWC in-charge chairperson Lina Babu confirmed that the infant was rescued from the house of a couple at Paikmal.
'We have not started an inquiry into the matter as the infant's rescue was our priority. We will launch a probe and lodge a police,' she said.According to sources, the alleged incident of child sale came to light on Sunday from Bagdera village under Bhaleigaon panchayat in Titilagarh sub-division. A poverty-stricken couple, identified as Nila and Kanak Rana, has been accused of selling their newborn daughter for Rs 20,000, police said.
However, Paikmal couple denied allegations of purchasing the child, but claimed that they brought the baby keeping in view her biological parents' poverty.
Officials said Nila and Kanak are both remarried. Nila has three daughters from his first wife, while Kanak has one daughter from her previous marriage.
Citing financial distress, the Rana couple allegedly handed over the newborn to the other family.
'We have not sold her. We gave the baby for her better upbringing, not for money,' Nila Rana told the CWC. In November 2024, police and CWC had rescued a newborn that was allegedly sold by her mother after her birth to a private hospital in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The incident was reported from Lathor area in Bolangir district.

Odisha police arrests two interstate burglars from Delhi
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Bhubaneswar, Aug 3 (PTI) The police on Sunday arrested two persons from New Delhi after they allegedly committed burglary in the house of an income tax officer here, an official said. According to police, the duo allegedly robbed 230 grams of gold ornaments and cash from the official residence of an IT department officer inside a colony on July 21 this year. Around 10.30 am on July 21, when no one was present in the house, the burglars entered the building by breaking open the main door. They had stolen 230 grams of gold ornaments and cash from there, said Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh. In the course of the investigation, it was found that the interstate burglary gang was involved in the case. The two accused persons were arrested in Delhi, and Rs 18 lakh in cash was seized, he said. The accused persons were active in Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and other states of India, he said. The seized cash is almost equivalent to the cost of the stolen gold. The seized money will be handed over to the victim, Singh said. Drugs Worth Around Rs 350-Crore Seized In Mizoram, 1 Arrested
Aizawl: In one of the biggest drug hauls in Mizoram, the state police have seized crystal methamphetamine and heroin worth around Rs 350 crore and arrested one person, a senior officer said on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, a team comprising personnel of the Criminal Investigation Department (Special Branch) and the Special Narcotic police station in Aizawl conducted an operation near the state capital on August 1. The joint team intercepted an Aizawl-bound pickup truck, which was carrying Mithun, at a stretch between Zemabawk and Seling areas, the police officer said. During a thorough search of the vehicle, the team seized 20.304 kg of crystal meth worth around Rs 300 crore and 1.652 kg of heroin concealed in 128 soap cases worth Rs 49.56 lakh from a hidden compartment, the officer said. The vehicle's driver, identified as B Lalthazuala (45), a resident of Aizawl's Republic Mual Veng, has been arrested for transporting drugs, he said. The accused has been booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, he said. Further investigation is underway, the officer added.

Gururgam Man Leaves Home With Rs 7 Lakh, Stabbed Hours Later By Live-In Partner
A woman in Gurugram stabbed her live-in partner as a days-long dispute allegedly over him meeting his wife and children continued to escalate. He died during treatment. 42-year-old Harish, a resident of Gurugram's Baliyavas, and 27-year-old Yashmeet Kaur, a resident of Delhi's Ashok Vihar, were in a relationship and living together in DLF Phase-3 since over a year. Kaur often had fights with Harish, a married man with children, when the latter would go to meet his wife and family. On Saturday, when one such fight escalated, the woman stabbed the man with a knife. He was rushed to a hospital in Gurugram but died of the injuries. Hours before the altercation between the live-in couple, Harish's nephew Bharat said his uncle came home from his job in Faridabad, took Rs 7 lakh from him and left in a car in which another accused Vijay had come to pick him up. As per police, Harish also called Bharat around 10 pm, instructing him to collect a food order and pay for it. The next day, around 7 am, he received a call from Kaur, who informed that his uncle had died. Bharat added that Harish had a stab wound on his chest. Kaur was arrested and the knife used to stab Harish was seized. Vijay is being interrogated by the police and the police is trying to ascertain why the victim had taken Rs 7 lakh on the night of the incident.
