Delhi's stray dog crisis: Vir Das requests residents to adopt indie dogs after SC's relocation order; encourages support for animal NGOs
NEW DELHI: The recent Supreme Court directive mandating the relocation of all stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR region to shelters has ignited a wave of public discourse. Amid the rising public discourse, actor and comedian Vir Das took to Instagram on Monday evening, appealing to residents of Delhi to adopt stray dogs. "If you are a resident of Delhi. Can I persuade you to adopt an indie off the streets, more than one? They are extremely healthy, low maintenance, and will provide you with more love, affection and gratitude than you could ever imagine. Am also asking you to wholeheartedly and generously," he wrote. He added: "Support your nearest animal welfare NGO. I plan on doing so, and I hope you will too. As appeals are filed in court and processes take their time, it's important for our humanity to kick in immediately. Please do your part, big or small, it all adds up." The court added that any resistance to the dog-catching operations would face legal consequences. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 25 Simple Plant Hacks You'll Wish You'd Learned Sooner Learn More Undo "If any individual or organisation comes in the way of picking stray dogs or rounding them up, we will proceed to take action against any such resistance," Justice Pardiwala stated. The bench further directed municipal and state authorities to establish adequate shelter facilities equipped with staff to carry out sterilisation and immunisation efforts. "NCT Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, MCD, NMDC shall start picking up stray dogs from all localities, particularly from more vulnerable localities. It is for the authorities to look into and if they have to create a force, do it at the earliest. However, this should be the first and foremost exercise to make all localities free of stray dogs. There should not be any compromise in undertaking the exercise," the court ordered. Additionally, the bench instructed that a dedicated helpline be set up to report dog bite incidents, requiring authorities to remove the dog in question within four hours of a complaint. Authorities must also keep daily records of the captured and detained animals, with CCTV surveillance in place to ensure adherence. The court reiterated that no stray dog should be released back into public spaces. (With agency inputs) Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
