A Port of Dover spokesperson warned: "Processing time in the Buffer Zone is approximately 90 minutes.
"There are no queues at the check-in plaza, but the port approach roads are still very busy and congested.
"TAP procedures are in place for freight. We wish everyone a safe journey!"
The end of July and beginning of August are some of the most popular times for Brits to go abroad.
However, the huge surge in journeys to airports and staycation destinations means more people will be on the roads than ever.
The Port of Dover is a popular travel route for Brits heading to France and, then, onto Europe.
Just last weekend a staggering 3 million drivers hit the road, amid the dreaded 'Saturday Scramble'.
Meanwhile queues became so big on Thursday last week drivers exited their cars and waited by the side of the road - despite warnings that this was unsafe.
Doug Bannister, chief executive at the Port of Dover, has previously said that the organisation has been 'preparing for a busy summer'.
He said: 'We know how vital it is to keep things moving, not just for holidaymakers but for our local community too.
'That's why we've boosted staff levels, strengthened traffic management, added welfare facilities and introduced AI-powered forecasting - all to minimise disruption and ensure both residents and travellers have the best possible experience during this busy season.'
This year's summer getaway is expected to see the biggest number of midweek car trips made since records began.
Experts at the RAC estimated drivers planning 13.9million journeys between Monday July 21 and Thursday 24 July.
RAC mobile servicing and repairs team leader Nick Mullender said:'Normally the weekend bears the brunt of getaway traffic but this year we're expecting 'midweek mayhem'.
'We typically see a peak on 'Frantic Friday' when holidaymakers share the roads with commuters heading home, but our figures indicate these trips will now be spread across several days with millions more weekday journeys planned.
"To avoid the worst of the traffic, travel outside peak times and steer well clear of morning and evening rush hours.
'If a getaway journey involves hours in the car, it's essential to be well rested and fresh for the trip.
"If possible, share the driving with another passenger to ensure concentration levels stay high, while those travelling with children should pack plenty of entertainment to keep them occupied and minimise questions of 'are we there yet?'. Water, snacks and phone chargers are essential!
'Before setting off, drivers should do whatever they can to avoid their vehicles letting them down, like checking oil and coolant levels as well as the condition and tread on all tyres.
"There's also still time to book an RAC Mobile Mechanic who can carry out a wide range of repairs at home or work, as well conducting a full or interim service.'
The busy port has undergone a huge renovation in recent months, which reportedly cost a £6billion.
Previously only able to accommodate ships with a maximum length of 320m, it can now allow boats of up to 350m to moor at Dover.
A statement from the Port of Dover following the upgrade said that it can now welcome 'some of the largest cruise ships in the world'.
They will have room for bigger ships from the likes of Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Princess.

"Set off early fellas, M5 & A30 going to be rammed with holiday traffic," Newquay AFC Supporters group wrote on X. In addition, the town is hosting Boardmasters festival, 55,000 extra visitors in the area, clogging up all the roads for miles around. "Newquay population is 21,500 + 70,000 holidaymakers + festival = chaos." Away from the roads, punters heading to the festival by train should also expect disruption. CrossCountry anticipates that Plymouth train station will be especially busy as visitors change to connecting trains at this station. CrossCountry said: "Boardmasters Festival is located in Newquay, and you can get to Newquay station easily with CrossCountry. "The simplest way to get to Newquay using CrossCountry services is to change at Plymouth station. "From Newquay station, shuttles run to the festival every fifteen minutes on Wednesday, August 6. Lesser-known destination 'warmer than the Canaries' has direct flights from UK

The Canary Islands have long been a favourite with Brits thanks to the year-round sun, stunning beaches and short flight times - but there's a destination that offers all of that and more The Canary Islands, with their year-round sunshine, beautiful beaches and short flight duration, are a top choice for Brits seeking a holiday abroad. The Spanish islands have been a beloved destination for generations, ever since the tourism boom in the 1960s. Since that time, millions of tourists have descended upon popular islands like Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. In 2023 alone, approximately 14 million international tourists visited the islands. However, this influx of visitors has sparked protests from locals who are calling for more sustainable tourism practices. But there's another destination that offers a similar experience to the Canary Islands - and it's even hotter - but without the throngs of tourists. Cape Verde, an archipelago off the coast of Senegal, is being hailed as the 'new Canaries', and it's not hard to see why. Cape Verde consists of ten islands (nine of which are inhabited): São Vicente, São Nicolau, Santo Antão, Santa Luzia, Maio, Sal, Boa Vista, Santiago, Fogo and Brava. Boa Vista and Sal are particularly popular with holidaymakers. The islands gained independence from Portugal in 1975 but retain a blend of African and European culture - somewhat akin to how the Canary Islands feel distinct from mainland Spain. Situated further south in the Atlantic than the Canaries, Cape Verde boasts warmer temperatures that seldom dip below 20C, reports the Manchester Evening News. The temperatures hit their zenith in July, August and September, soaring to around 30C, yet even in January, the mercury remains at a balmy 25C. Cape Verde is blessed with a cooling sea breeze wafting in from the Atlantic. The climate is divided into two distinct seasons; the dry season spans from November to June, while the rainy season occurs between August and September. One of the archipelago's most awe-inspiring phenomena happens between July and October - the turtle nesting season - necessitating extra caution from visitors on the beaches. Drawing parallels with the Canaries, Cape Verde boasts stunning beaches that could give the Caribbean a run for its money. Santa Maria in Sal showcases a golden expanse of sand punctuated by vibrant fishing boats scattered along the coast. Boa Vista houses the remarkable Santa Monica beach, stretching an impressive 9km. Praia de Chaves, also situated on Boa Vista, is flanked by sand dunes and extends for 5.6km. Owing to their coastal location and position in the Atlantic, the islands are a magnet for watersports enthusiasts. Avid hikers and nature aficionados will be captivated by the untouched natural beauty and diverse landscapes the island presents. Indeed, you won't stumble upon bustling resorts in Cape Verde, or lively 'strips' teeming with bars and restaurants. Rather, the country's hospitality sector primarily consists of quaint all-inclusive hotels offering a serene experience. Many are nestled right on the beachfront, allowing you to awaken to the soothing sound of waves lapping against the shore. Direct flights to Cape Verde are available from several UK airports, with the journey taking approximately six hours.

Top 20 countries to retire that could save you cash in your golden years – including island with 300 days of sun

Experts looked at factors including affordability, the cost of buying a home, lifestyle, healthcare and safety. But Ireland has been named the ideal overseas destination, according to analysis carried out by wealth management firm Hoxton Wealth. Each country was ranked with a score from 1 to 100 - and Ireland scored an impressive 85. That's partly because of the ease to migrate there legally post-Brexit. Ireland scored the highest of all countries for visa access and residency pathways because UK citizens have unique rights under the Common Travel Area (CTA) agreement. It means UK can live, work, retire, and access public services in Ireland without restriction, unlike any other EU country following Brexit. Plus, it's easier to integrate because everyone speaks English and it's still close to the UK. In joint second place were Portugal and Cyprus, which both scored highly on lifestyle and safety. People thinking of a move to Portugal can enjoy mild winters and hot summers, as well as its relaxed and outdoor-oriented lifestyle. Popular expat areas include on the Algarve, the Lisbon coast, the Silver Coast, and on Madeira. I explored the tiny European country with underground cities and little-known islands Portugal is also consistently ranked among the best places to live for retirees globally. Cyprus was also highly rated for its climate and its relaxed, beach-oriented lifestyle. It's known for being expat-friendly, especially around areas like Paphos, Limassol and Lanarca - which all offer great outdoor living year-round. The top 20 countries ranked and how they scored 1 - Ireland = 87 2 - Cyprus = 85 3 - Portugal = 85 4 - Malta = 83 5 - Malaysia = 81 6 - Panama = 81 7 - Spain = 81 8 - Greece = 80 9 - Mauritius = 80 10 - Turkey = 80 11 - UAE = 80 12 - France = 78 13 - Italy = 76 14- Uruguay = 76 15 - Canada = 73 16 - Japan = 73 17 - Thailand = 72 18 - New Zealand = 70 19 - USA = 69 20 - Australia = 68 UK baseline = 77 Malta was next on the list as it has structured and accessible residence schemes for British retirees. Everything is also accessible there as English is an official language. The country has been picked out for its affordability, including affordable healthcare, transport and dining. Property prices are rising in areas like Sliema and Valletta but there's still excellent value in smaller towns and in Gozo. Plus, it's said to have a huge 300 days of sun per year. Although Spain has typically been seen as a haven for expats, it's now slipped down the rankings because Brits are regarded as third-country nationals. You would need a visa to stay there for any longer than 90 days in any 180-day period. Retirees can get the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), but you'd need to show a passive income of €28,800 (£24,370) a year per person. Still, Brits could be drawn to the Spanish lifestyle - including its sunny Mediterranean climate - as well as the well-established expat hubs in places like the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and in the Balearics. The countries rated best for cost of living were Malaysia, Turkey and Thailand, with Canada, Japan and Australia scoring the best for economic and political stability. The UAE was rated best for taxation with no income tax on individuals, no inheritance tax and no tax on pensions or investment income. Chris Ball, CEO of Hoxton Wealth, said: "Places like Spain, France, Australia, and the like have long been seen as safe, sunny, and straightforward. But the world has changed. "Rising living costs, shifting visa rules post-Brexit, evolving tax landscapes, and new global lifestyle trends mean the decision of where to retire or relocate now involves far more than sunshine and property prices. "UK residents considering retiring abroad need to look beyond purely the climate or cost of living." Best places in the UK to retire If you're planning to stay in the UK, there are also plenty of great options. A recent study by Legal and General ranked the "wine capital" of Britain on its list, as well as areas of Surrey and Buckinghamshire. Chesham and Amersham took the top spot as the best place in the UK to spend your golden years. The area – popular for its transport links to London, its charming and historic streets, and for being a gateway for walkers and cyclists to the picturesque Chilterns – was ranked the highest in L&G's index. The picturesque town of Beaconsfield, also in Buckinghamshire, came in second place, while Dorking and Horley in Surrey was third. Also in Surrey, Goldalming and Ash was fourth, while Mid Sussex completed the top five. West Sussex - which is part of the wine capital of the UK and produces more wine than any county - also made the list, with East Grinstead and Uckfield coming in 10th. They were ranked on access to healthcare, opportunities to build social connections, access to nature, local amenities and financial security.
