As uncertainty grows, Aquila doubles down on destination training
MIAMI – As the cruise tourism industry navigates global economic recalibration and rising geopolitical uncertainty, the Aquila Center for Cruise Excellence is doubling down on its mission: training Caribbean destinations to deliver exceptional guest experiences, no matter the climate.
At Seatrade Cruise Global 2025, Aquila Managing Partner Melanie Colpitts emphasized the growing importance of workforce development as a strategic advantage. 'When travelers are more selective with their spending, it's the destinations that consistently deliver excellence that will stand out,' said Colpitts.
With the energy on the show floor buzzing, Aquila led strategic conversations focused on future-proofing the Caribbean's tourism product through long-term training investments. From cruise line executives to destination decision-makers, the message was clear: quality training pays off.
Aquila, a leading training partner for the cruise industry for more than 15 years, unveiled new initiatives at the conference, including immersive VR-based programs developed in collaboration with Winged Whale Media. The team activated a dynamic takeover of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) booth, hosting live demonstrations, mini-training sessions, and interactive activities that illustrated how technology can enhance both the visitor experience and community capacity.
Product development and sustainability were front and center in this year's training dialogue. 'Destinations want to build experiences that are not only memorable but meaningful and sustainable,' said Colpitts. 'It's about enriching the guest journey while protecting and celebrating the culture and communities that make the Caribbean so special.'
With global economic uncertainty on the rise, Aquila is urging destinations not to retreat but to double down on service delivery. 'Even if arrivals dip, we must exceed expectations for guests. That kind of experience drives powerful word of mouth – and training is the foundation,' added Colpitts.
As the official training partner of the FCCA, Aquila remains committed to raising performance standards across the Caribbean and Latin America, equipping destinations with the skills and tools to compete – and win – on the global stage.

Speakspots.com launches AI-powered guest communication platform
White label agentic AI solution by debuts with high-end hotels in rural destinations, designed to enhance guest experience and increase revenue. LONDON, UK – Travel tech startup has launched a white-label AI agent for hotels, automating guest communications and driving incremental revenue. This launch marks entry into the B2B space with a smart, scalable solution that blends LLMs, web scraping, and real-time personalisation -[all delivered through WhatsApp. The service also includes an AI powered reservation agent which can make telephone calls on guests' behalf to book restaurants or activities – overcoming language barriers and roaming fees. The agentic AI solution is targeted towards rural properties and transforms the way hotels engage with guests by offering real-time, hyper-personalized recommendations – delivered through WhatsApp and powered by Speakspots' proprietary AI agent technology. The proof of concept was developed at 5-star ARTIEM Asturias who are now rolling out white label platform in a second property, the 4-star ARTIEM Carlos in Menorca. 'In rural areas and secondary cities, hotels are still very much seen as the entry-point to a destination – guests look to them for advice and guidance about what to see and do during their stay,' said Andres Martinez Artal, CEO and founder of 'We're giving hoteliers the tools they need to seamlessly deliver a 5-star guest experience both in and around the hotel, all while increasing their revenue per guest and championing local businesses and SMEs.' How It Works AI agents integrate both internal hotel content (website, apps, documents) and external data (local partner sites, hotel staff knowledge) to provide guests with personalised and curated recommendations – ranging from on-site services to off-property experiences like restaurants and cultural attractions. Guests do not need to install any app – instead the solution works via WhatsApp to reach guests directly, with voice assistant integration planned for the near future. Similarly, the set-up is easy for the hotel, requiring no PMS or CRM integration to get going. solution also includes a 'robot making calls', or an AI-powered reservation agent. Guests can ask the AI agent to make a restaurant or activity booking on their behalf and the AI will make the call, speaking to business owners in their local language, to secure a table reservation, tour or activity booking. In rural areas where many SMEs (small, medium enterprises) have limited digital presence or only speak their own language, this solution helps to overcome two key challenges: language barriers and roaming fees for making calls. 'There's a paradox in travel right now; digital native travellers want authentic, local experiences, but the small businesses in destinations who are most able to offer that authenticity can't keep up with fast-moving advances in technology and AI', explains Andres Martinez Artal. 'What we need is a technological bridge, that means SMEs can benefit from GenAI for next to nothing and with very little effort, and digital travellers can find what they're looking for via their everyday technology. We are building that bridge.' Results That Matter Unlike traditional guest messaging tools or PMS/CRM plugins, white label solution focuses on personalization to both improve the guest experience and drive incremental revenue. The pilot programme at ARTIEM Asturias saw measurable increases in guest spending and satisfaction in the first two months – with just 20% of the additional sales generated covering the cost of running the platform. 'We're not just offering another SaaS solution. We're offering a smart, revenue-generating concierge that guests access through the technology theyr'e already using every day,' said Martinez Artal. 'The solution drives direct, trackable revenue uplift. And it enhances guest loyalty in a way big tech cannot.' Designed for a Sector That Needs It Speakspots is targeting high-end hotels, predominantly in rural destinations—often overlooked by mainstream platforms yet deeply dependent on strong guest experience and local integration. 'We're starting with a niche where the value is obvious and immediate, turning the hotel into the engine of the local community and connecting travellers with the authentic experiences they want, all while dispersing valuable tourism revenue', continues Martinez Artal. 'Down the line, we can see this solution rolling out to other SMEs in hospitality and supporting social sustainability in rural and secondary travel destinations.' The platform is scalable across regions, languages, and property sizes, but initial growth is focused on Spain and Western Europe. The launch follows rapid B2C growth across Europe, where its traveller itinerary generator continues to grow month-on-month in user numbers and itinerary creation volume.

Mews survey reveals: The rise of self-check in hotels
Mews research shows 70% of U.S. travelers prefer digital check-in, highlighting growing demand for self-service, personalization, and frictionless hotel experiences. NEW YORK, NEW YORK – The traditional hotel front desk is no longer a must-stop for modern guests, as revealed by new Mews-commissioned research. Seventy percent of American travelers are likely to check themselves into a hotel using an app or a self-service kiosk instead of a traditional front desk. This preference skyrockets to 82% among Gen Z travelers, signaling a fundamental shift in how guests want to interact with hotels. Self-service isn't just about speed – it's a key driver of guest satisfaction and loyalty. In a survey of 2,000 U.S. travelers, frustrations with traditional hotel operations remain clear: 82% of current hotel loyalty members report pain points with existing systems, including lengthy check-in processes, limited flexibility, and outdated service models that fail to meet modern expectations. 'I founded Mews to transform the traditional hotel experience by eliminating the reception desk to allow staff to engage more personally with guests,' said Richard Valtr, Founder of Mews. 'Since bringing Mews Kiosks to hotels in the U.S., 30% of guests check-in via the Kiosk, cutting check-in time by a third and freeing up staff to really welcome their guests and provide remarkable experiences throughout their stay, not to mention the fact that Kiosks drive 25% higher upsells in our hotels today. Waiting in the lobby queue is simply not a hospitable experience for today's travelers, it's another example where if the technology works, guests value convenience over tradition.' U.S Hotels Surpass Global Benchmarks in Digital Adoption Mews' own data shows that U.S. properties are leading the way in self-service: In the U.S., 30% of all reservations among Kiosk-enabled hotels are checked in through Mews Kiosk, versus a global benchmark of 20% 10.5% of total U.S. reservations use the Mews Guest Portal for check-in (compared to the global average of 8.6%), marking a 20% higher preference for online check-in among U.S. guests. Hotels are also seeing measurable benefits. Guests checking in via kiosk are three times more likely to purchase an upsell, generating nearly 70% more upsell revenue per check-in compared to those using the front desk. Other insights from the survey include: Nearly 80% of guests most likely to return to a hotel cite personalized amenities as the reason, with the sentiment strongest among Gen Z travelers (89%). 93% of travelers are willing to share personal data in order to improve their experiences with hotels, including details on preferred check-in/out times (60%), gender preferences (49%), food and beverage choices (48%), age (47%) and desired amenities and activities (46%). 'At Generator, we're always looking for ways to enhance the guest experience, from our smart, design-led spaces to the technology that powers the guest journey,' said Annajane Guzel, Global Director of Brand Marketing at Generator. 'Our self-check-in kiosks at Generator Miami have become an essential part of how we create a seamless experience for our guests who value efficiency. By leveraging this smart technology, we're not only streamlining operations but elevating the guest experience in a way that feels intuitive, flexible, and reflective of how our guests travel. Our self-check-in kiosks give guests the autonomy to arrive on their own terms, skip the desk, and dive straight into the true Generator experience – whether that's exploring like a local or relaxing by the pool with a cocktail in hand.' Valtr added, 'The message from travelers is clear: frictionless convenience is the new standard. This isn't about eliminating human interaction – it's about empowering both guests and staff to create more meaningful touchpoints and experiences. Hotels embracing this evolution will earn the loyalty of tomorrow's most valuable guests.' The data from both travelers and hotels is clear: the front desk era is giving way to a digital-first guest journey, where flexibility, personalization, and operational excellence will shine.
