Nintendo Switch 2 review: A mature evolution of a modern classic

Irish Examiner03-07-2025
The original Switch was nothing short of a phenomenon, an inventive hybrid console that blended home and handheld gaming with clever design and irresistible Nintendo exclusives. And now, eight years on, many of the players who picked up the original Switch as teens or young adults have grown up, and so too, in many ways, has the console. The Nintendo Switch 2 hasn't strayed far from Nintendo's winning formula, but it feels like a more mature, confident piece of hardware. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but instead, it refines almost everything that made the first model so beloved. From performance to build quality, this is a Switch that's grown with its audience, and the result is the best version yet.
Design and build
Visually, the Switch 2 doesn't stray far from the form factor of its predecessor, but the differences are noticeable in the hand. The console is larger and heavier but feels sturdier, with a refined matte finish and tighter tolerances across the chassis. Gone are the creaky plastics; instead, you get a more premium-feeling device.
The new magnetic Joy-Con system replaces the original rail slide-in method. I was sceptical at first, but the magnetic connection is satisfyingly solid. Snapping them on and off feels smooth and secure, and thankfully, that annoying Joy-Con wobble is now a thing of the past. You can even ping them if they get lost under the couch.
Another sign that the Switch 2 has matured is the shift in Nintendo's design language. The playful neon colours are mostly gone, replaced by a more subdued black finish, bringing it in line with contemporary handhelds like the Steam Deck, Legion Go, and ROG Ally. However, there are still subtle nods to Nintendo's playful roots, with neon blue and orange accents under the left and right joysticks, as well as where the Joy-Cons connect to the main Switch 2.
Display
Nintendo has enlarged the screen on the Switch 2, and while it still uses LCD rather than OLED, it's an excellent panel. At 8 inches, the display feels more immersive, especially when paired with the console's more powerful internals. Games like Mario Kart World and Cyberpunk 2077 look sharper, richer, and far more detailed than anything the original Switch could manage.
Peak brightness is a noticeable improvement over the original, and colours pop, though some users have reported mild ghosting in fast-moving scenes. I didn't experience anything severe myself, but it's worth noting that performance may vary by title.
HDR is technically supported, but its implementation is clunky, enabled by default across all content and requires a dive into menus to fine-tune paper white settings. I got it to work well on my LG OLED TV, but your mileage may vary.
Ergonomics
The Switch 2 is more comfortable to hold thanks to slightly chunkier Joy-Cons and a redesigned back that curves more naturally into the palms. The Joy-Cons still maintain a thin profile, matching the overall design, which means that extended handheld play can still lead to hand fatigue for some users. I wasn't able to use the original for long without additional grips, and while the Switch 2 is an improvement, I still found myself immediately downloading and printing several 3D grip files. I have large hands, and the extra grips made a massive difference to my overall comfort during extended play sessions. There are plenty of third-party grips already available, and of course, you can also purchase the optional Nintendo Controller Pro.
Thankfully, the revised kickstand is now wide and stable, perfect for tabletop play. Nintendo has also added a USB-C port at the top, allowing for play in kickstand mode while charging, which
Performance
Under the hood, the Switch 2 gets a serious boost, powered by a custom Nvidia chip that rivals the performance of entry-level gaming laptops. Cyberpunk 2077, a game that never would've run on the original Switch, plays smoothly at medium settings, and first-party titles like Mario Kart World look absolutely gorgeous, with detailed environments and smooth 60fps gameplay.
Performance across the UI has been significantly improved as well. The eShop, which is a laggy mess on the original, now loads quickly and scrolls smoothly. The Switch 2 handles modern games admirably for a hybrid console, and most of the original Switch games I tried ran much smoother.
Hardware
Battery life is solid but not exceptional. I got three to five hours out of the most demanding games, and lighter titles easily stretch that to seven hours or more. The included charger fully charges the battery in under two hours, and USB-C charging is available at both the top and bottom, adding convenience.
The storage expansion slot, located behind the kickstand, is no longer compatible with standard microSD cards. Instead, it now uses the newer and significantly faster microSD Express format. While this offers improved performance, the downside is that these cards are harder to find and are more expensive.
The new built-in Game Chat now supports voice, video, and even screen sharing with friends, and it works surprisingly well. You can view up to three friends' gameplay feeds in floating windows, a fantastic feature that makes the Switch 2 feel more social than its predecessor.
The new Joy-Con mouse functionality is unexpectedly smooth and intuitive, especially when using the strap accessory. While few games currently take advantage of it, the potential is there.
The Dock
The new Switch 2 dock is cleaner, more compact, and less toy-like, now featuring rounded corners, a softer matte finish, and a more stable base.
There's a USB-C charging port located discreetly inside, along with the usual HDMI and an Ethernet port. It supports 4K output at up to 60Hz, although not every game or app currently takes full advantage of this feature. Even if a game doesn't natively output in 4K, the dock will upscale the image to 4K when connected to a compatible TV or monitor, enhancing visual quality. Nvidia also claims that the Switch 2 offers 10 times the graphical performance of the original Switch.
The dock features improved airflow and active cooling, allowing the console to run cooler in docked mode, even during intense gameplay sessions.
Library
The launch line-up includes Mario Kart World, which acts as both a tech demo and a phenomenal new entry in the long-running series. It's vibrant, tight, and shows off what the new hardware can do when Nintendo pushes it.
Backwards compatibility ensures your old library still has a home, and several older games like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet already look and run significantly better on the new hardware.
Verdict
The Nintendo Switch 2 isn't revolutionary, but it doesn't need to be. It's a capable refinement of the original that adds meaningful upgrades in power, usability and social features, while still feeling unmistakably Nintendo.

Nintendo reports robust early sales of Switch 2, keeps full-year forecast

Nintendo sold more than six million units of the Switch 2 in the seven weeks following its June launch, the gaming company said today, pointing to strong early demand. The successor to the hit home-portable Switch went on sale in the midst of US President Donald Trump's trade war, testing Nintendo's supply chain management. "The six million units sold are a testament to the incredible pent-up demand for an update of the first Switch," said Serkan Toto, founder of the Kantan Games consultancy. The company provided the early sales volumes in an earnings update and said it was keeping its forecast of selling 15 million Switch 2 units in the financial year ending March 2026. Kyoto-based Nintendo said operating profit grew 4% to 56.9 billion yen ($378m) in the April-June quarter, beating analysts' estimates. It said US tariff measures and other changes in the market environment had no significant impact on its current earnings forecast. The Switch 2 was launched on June 5 with titles including "Mario Kart World" and upgraded "The Legend of Zelda" series with better graphics. Nintendo sold 8.67 million Switch 2 software units during the quarter with "Mario Kart World" frequently bundled with the device. "Donkey Kong Bananza" was released on July 17 and has a score of 92 out of 100 on reviews aggregator Metacritic, indicating universal acclaim. "Nintendo must use the momentum and the absence of blockbuster GTA 6 this year to carry the Switch 2 through to the holidays," said Toto of Kantan Games. "Grand Theft Auto VI" was slated to launch this year and was expected to provide a boost to consoles such as Sony's PlayStation 5 but its release has been delayed to 2026.

Rita Ora teams up with Netflix to secretly record new song for massive series

Find out which A-list rapper and singer appeared in the ring at WWE's Summerslam STAR'S NEW TRACK Rita Ora teams up with Netflix to secretly record new song for massive series RITA ORA sure has her fingers in a lot of pies. I can reveal the singer/actress/presenter has recorded a new song for the upcoming second series of Netflix hit Love Is Blind UK. Sources tell me Joy is a powerful track about finding inner peace and is expected to be released in the coming days. Rather than being on her upcoming fourth album, Joy will be a stand-alone song that will debut in a TV trailer for the dating show then drop on Spotify and Amazon Music. A source said: 'It's no secret that Rita loves love so she jumped at the chance to record a track for Love Is Blind UK. Joy is very much a mini side-project rather than being part of the new album. 'The song will be used on the show and be available to stream but there are no plans for a video or to send it to radio.' The American diva arrived in a shiny ombre dress and pink jacket, which featured the phrase 'protect the dolls' on the back, as she pledged her support to the trans community. Later, during her 90-minute set, she changed into another dazzling minidress, as well as a gold shift and floor-length black gown. Mariah told the crowd: 'The LGBTQ+ family, both as a community and as individuals have been here for me for so long. I just want you to know that I'll always, always be there for you.' Mariah Carey, 56, wears FOUR figure-hugging outfits and puts on leggy display as she headlines Brighton Pride The show, which featured hits including Fantasy and her new single Sugar Sweet, topped off a day of festivities, ahead of the second day yesterday which was headlined by Sugababes. Earlier on Saturday, Attitude magazine kicked off the annual event with a party at the i360 tower which was attended by Dame Kelly Holmes, Caity Baser and Rob Rinder. The rapper looked ready for take-off as she entered the ring to kick off the opening night of the WWE Summerslam 2025 wrestling extravaganza in New Jersey on Saturday. But rather than singing or fighting, Cardi was simply there to launch the event, teasing music from her upcoming second album Am I The Drama? As she strutted to the ring, a new Cardi track was blasted through the stadium, sending fans into a meltdown online. Her long-awaited follow-up to 2018's Invasion Of Privacy is out on September 19. Hope it's worth the wait. GAGA IN TRIBUTE TO OZZY 7 Lady Gaga reached out to Kelly Osbourne's family Credit: Getty DESPITE being in the middle of a world tour, Lady Gaga is finding time to support others. I'm told she was so moved by the death of Ozzy Osbourne that she sent a huge bouquet to his grieving wife Sharon and the family. The move is a full-circle moment for the two women after Sharon branded the hitmaker an attention-seeker in 2013. That came after Gaga locked horns with her daughter Kelly Osbourne after she criticised the singer for not stopping to greet fans. A source said: 'The flowers must have cost hundreds but Gaga wanted to reach out. 'Gaga has always been a huge fan of Ozzy and the Osbournes – before she was famous she even used to strip to Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath. "She once told Ozzy – he found it hilarious.' The kind gesture comes after Gaga closed her San Francisco show last month by belting out Ozzy's 1980 hit Crazy Train as a tribute. CHAPPELL SLINKS IN 7 Chappell Roan slipped into Oasis's latest London gig undetected Credit: Getty - Contributor SHE'S one of the biggest stars on the planet, but Chappell Roan was able to slip into Oasis's latest London gig undetected. The singer, who released new single The Subway last week, was seen in the crowd at Wembley on Saturday – singing away to the hits. Frank Lampard and Nicole Appleton also snubbed a swanky suite to mix with regular fans. OASIS fever is still sweeping the UK. Yesterday the Y Not Festival in Derbyshire was forced to upgrade tribute act Noasis to the main stage. They were due to play an 800-capacity slot but bosses had a rethink after more than double that number of guests saved the slot on their festival app. The Diana Mixtape musical @ Outernet, London ★★★★☆ 7 Hear'Say's Noel Sullivan and actress Lucinda Lawrence Credit: Supplied YOU might think a stage musical about Princess Diana would be sad, yet The Diana Mixtape is anything but. With five world-class drag queens from RuPaul's Drag Race playing the People's Princess while singing classics from Kylie, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, it's utterly joyous from start to finish. The crowd at Outernet London lapped it up. A shout out also needs to go to Hear'Say's Noel Sullivan and actress Lucinda Lawrence, for their Charles and Camilla romp to Dua Lipa's Physical. Hilarious. Greatest Showman star Keala Settle brought even more fun as Elizabeth II, but ultimately it was the queens who shone brightest. It's on at Outernet until Sunday then The Lowry, Salford, from August 19-21. OLIVIA RODRIGO's 2021 album Sour is still breaking records. The release has become the first album on Spotify to have four songs with more than two billion streams each. Traitor, Drivers License, Deja Vu and Good 4 U have all passed the milestone. Not bad for an album the US star wrote when she was just 17.

New Mario game kept me up until 1am – it's a perfect multiplayer title for kids this summer or late nights with pals

A GREAT measure for a game is when it's so fun, you completely lose track of time. Ticking that box is Nintendo's revamped Super Mario Party Jamboree, which kept not only me but six pals awake until 1am. If you've got kids, this is an absolute dream family title. 11 Super Mario Party Jamboree is a favourite at home Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun 11 It's a brilliant Mario-themed party game Credit: Nintendo 11 The game has been upgraded for the new Nintendo Switch 2 Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun The game actually came out in October 2024, but it's just been upgraded for the new Nintendo Switch 2. WHAT IS SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE? This new version has some extra modes and mini-games, but it's largely the same game. Super Mario Party Jamboree (Nintendo Switch 2), £66.99 And it really is a good game. If you're new to the Mario Party franchise, it's basically a giant collection of mini-games with very low barriers to entry. You can just pick it up and play. It's fine to play solo, although it's way better if you've got someone else with you. We had friends visit recently, and it kept us up late into the night. It's moreish, like spicy crisps. Or most other Mario games. If you've ever played Jackbox Games, Mario Party serves a similar purpose. It's packed with loads of Mario-themed mini-games. Some of them demand speedy reactions, while others will challenge your memory. And some even involve physical movement – like flapping your arms in the air while holding the Joy-Con controllers to fly. If you're alone then you'll play against the computer. The Sun tries new Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart before it's out But with friends, you can take on each other – or even team up – in a bid to win. SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE GAMEPLAY The good thing is that all of the games are very simple. There are dozens on offer, and you'll easily pick any of them up in seconds. And they're all bright, colourful challenges where you'll play as (and alongside) iconic Mario characters. 11 You'll explore Mario's world and enjoy loads of mini-games Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun 11 Playing with friends makes it even more fun – especially if you have the camera accessory Credit: Nintendo One fun game saw me collecting coins on shifting sands. Spiky bars rolled right at me, so I had to quickly sidestep or leap in the air to dodge them. Another had me yanking bread out of an oven – but only once it had baked to perfection. Too soon? No coins! You can enjoy a sort of 'Grand Prix' of mini-game series, so you'll earn points after a few rounds – and then see who came out on top. If you've got four people playing at once, it's very high energy. This is great for a child's party, or an adult's party for that matter. 11 It's bright and colourful, and extremely easy to pick up Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has some clever upgrades. They're mostly tucked into a new section of the game called Jamboree TV. One of the main differences here is a set of games built for mouse-style controls. That's made possible by the Switch 2's upgraded Joy-Cons, which can be placed on a surface to work just like a computer mouse. Picture Credit: 11 It's fun for players of all ages – even if you've never really played video games before Credit: Nintendo But it's worth noting that mouse control games require a single Joy-Con per person and a surface. Oh, and you can't use the Pro Controller for those games either, as it doesn't have mouse functionality. If you have the Nintendo camera accessory (keep in mind, this is £50!), you can play three games that make use of it. It's a bit like the old Xbox Kinect camera system. One involves following physical commands, which is fun if you like moving around. Probably the best is Goombalancing Act, where you try not to drop Goombas balancing on top of your head. 11 There are dozens of mini-games to play Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun So what's bad? Well, there are a few downsides. It took me quite a while to actually get playing. I'd say there's a good five minutes of unskippable content before you can start. It's not the end of the world, but I'd rather have just been able to get going right away. As well as that, the game has a £66.99 price tag attached. So you'll want to make sure you're going to get enough use out of it. IS SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE WORTH BUYING? It's always tempting to just stick on Mario Kart. And the new Mario Kart World is very good. 11 Some of the games make use of the Joy-Con mouse feature Credit: Nintendo In fact, it's probably enough reason to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 alone. But Super Mario Party Jamboree is a great alternative with loads of variety, and sparks a bit more chat than a regular Mario Kart game. You're also far less likely to see major skill differences on this versus Mario Kart. Rather than one person always winning, you might be good at one mini-game and rubbish at the next. 11 You'll recognise loads of classic Mario characters Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun There's loads of variety so you won't get bored. And it's simple enough for basically anyone to play – even people who aren't used to holding game controllers. This really is as close as it gets to "fun for the whole family". It's not exactly cheap at £67, but if you snap it up now, you'll probably get loads of play-time in over summer. And then again at Christmas. The Sun says: One of the best "family" games out there – but it's perfect for a night with friends too. A mini-game treasure trove that will hook Mario fans, and convert everyone else. 4.5/5 Super Mario Party Jamboree (Nintendo Switch 2), £66.99 11 Nintendo fans will get hours of fun from Super Mario Party Jamboree Credit: Nintendo All prices in this article were correct at the time of writing, but may have since changed.
