Downtown Wichita plan seeks input
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — What should downtown Wichita look like in 10 years? City residents will have a chance to weigh in as a new phase of planning kicks off this summer, with public events designed to turn ideas into change.
The effort is part of Phase 2 of the Downtown Wichita Action Plan, a community-driven vision led by Downtown Wichita, in partnership with the Greater Wichita Partnership and global design firm Sasaki. Organizers say the next steps will build on input from more than 500 Wichitans who participated in Phase 1 last year.
More tornadoes and fewer meteorologists make a dangerous mix that worries officials
Public input so far has focused on making downtown more walkable, diverse in housing, rich in culture, and better connected to the Arkansas River. The community is being asked to help shape the design concepts that could define the next decade.
Two public events are scheduled:
June 1: Riverfest Pop-Up — From 1 to 6 p.m., the Action Plan team will host a booth at Riverfest where visitors can learn more and share feedback.
June 2: Open House at TempleLive — Residents are invited to attend from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wichita Scottish Rite to explore early design ideas and contribute directly to the planning process.

Garden City man gets 13 Years for racketeering, murder
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — A Garden City man has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for leading a multi-year racketeering operation that included drug trafficking, theft, and the 2020 murder of Alexander 'AJ' Perez, whose body has never been found. On May 27, Oscar Corrales Jr. was sentenced to 156 months — or 13 years — in the Kansas Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to engaging in a pattern of racketeering activity. Judge Rebecca J. Faurot handed down the sentence as part of a plea agreement between Corrales and prosecutors. No charges for officers in shooting of Haysville man Investigators say Corrales was at the center of a criminal operation that spanned several years and counties, involving the systematic theft of cars, tools, electronics, and the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl. According to court records, Corrales and his associates would steal vehicles and then either switch their vehicle identification numbers using wrecked cars with clean titles or dismantle the stolen vehicles for parts. Prosecutors said Corrales murdered Perez to protect his illicit operation. He reportedly accused Perez of stealing property that Corrales had previously stolen from others. Perez was reported missing in December 2020, and authorities believe he was killed around Dec. 6 of that year. Despite an extensive investigation, his remains have never been recovered. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues to seek information about the location of Perez's body. Anyone with knowledge is urged to contact the KBI. Corrales was originally arrested in December 2023 while already in custody on unrelated charges. For more Kansas news, click here. Two juveniles arrested after gun scare in Valley Center
VALLEY CENTER, Kan. (KSNW) — Two juveniles have been arrested and a third remains at large following a disturbance involving firearms at Lions Park in Valley Center on Monday afternoon. Around 5 p.m., Sedgwick County dispatchers received a report of juveniles brandishing guns at another group of youths in the park. Valley Center Police and Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputies responded quickly, but the suspects had already fled on foot. Wichita police identify victim in deadly convenience store shooting During the investigation, authorities identified three juvenile suspects. Two were later taken into custody. The third suspect has not yet been located. No injuries were reported. The case will be forwarded to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for potential charges. Former Super Bowl champions Eli Manning and Phil Simms weigh in on rookie Jaxson Dart

Both Manning and Simms also know a thing or two about NFL success. They have two Super Bowl rings each, and they recently weighed in on the rookie quarterback. What Eli Manning said about Jaxson Dart Manning has told Dart that he's always available as a confidant and mentor, Manning shared with reporters on Friday at a Madden 26 launch event, according to CBS Sports. 'I've told him, 'Hey, I'm here to help in any way. I'm a phone call away, a text away, but I'm not getting in the way,'' he said. Advertisement Manning and Dart traveled a similar path to New York with both having come to the Giants from Ole Miss. Manning even called Dart the night he was drafted. 'Eli's been a huge role model of mine, even before ... I got to Ole Miss, you know, watching him beat Tom (Brady) twice. That was incredible. Then I go to Ole Miss and not only him, but the whole Manning family was great to me. Specifically, Eli was a great asset,' Dart said, per Fireside Giants. But Manning said he is respecting Dart's personal NFL journey — and his advice to the rookie is for him to embrace that journey. 'You got to figure out, this is your journey, this is your deal. But if there's anything you need, happy to be here,' Manning said he told Dart. Advertisement Dart has yet to take an NFL snap, but he has already impressed Manning. 'I've been to some practices, and I've known Jaxson for the last three years, since he's been at Ole Miss and gotten to watch his career. So I've been just impressed with Jaxson because I've seen him get better every single year,' Manning said. That improvement and constant desire to improve is what teams want to see in their players, the Hall of Fame finalist added. 'It sounds like he's doing that with the Giants. Every day, you're going to learn something, and you're going to make mistakes. That's just part of it, but learning from those mistakes, not repeating those mistakes, and (it) seems like he's just trying to be there, earn the respect of his teammates and his coaches through his hard work,' he said. What Phil Simms said about Jaxson Dart On Monday, Simms shared praise for Dart while on the 'Up & Adams' show. 'His mobility was just better than I was giving him credit for during the offseason as I watched all these quarterbacks. You know, (he) runs at the right time, gives the play every opportunity to have success, and when in doubt, the pressure's too much, he can make it happen,' he said. Simms told host Kay Adams that he thinks Dart needs to start this season. Simms himself felt he understood the game and was ready to start after the third week of his rookie season in 1979, he said. He was named the starter a few weeks later. Advertisement Per Simms, the ideal situation for Dart and the Giants is a better start than last season. Then six to eight weeks in, the Giants need to put Dart in the game unless the team believes they can be 'great' without him. 'Give him some experience and let him have some success and some failures because that's how you grow in the NFL as a quarterback,' he said.
