Bears to sign Case Keenum: Updated quarterback depth
The Chicago Bears added to their quarterback room reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran free agent Case Keenum to a one-year deal worth up to $3 million.
Keenum now joins a quarterback room that is built around second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, all in place for new head coach Ben Johnson, who will be tasked with taking Williams' young career to the next level. Keenum will be the longest-tenured veteran in the quarterback room, bringing plenty of starter experience who has also played in the playoffs in 2018 with the Minnesota Vikings.
With the new addition to the quarterback room, here's a look at the Bears' updated quarterback depth heading into the 2025 season:
Caleb Williams
The cemented starter and potential long-time franchise quarterback of the future, Caleb Williams did not have a statistically bad rookie year, but the team success was a massive disappointment. Williams threw for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns and just six interceptions during a 5-12 season that led to a coaching change with Ben Johnson now running the show. With Johnson at the helm, the hope is Williams (and the Bears) will see considerable growth and improvement next season.
Case Keenum
An 11-year veteran in the league, Case Keenum has played for eight different teams with his most success happening in 2017 with the Minnesota Vikings. Keenum, who took the Vikings to the NFC Championship game where they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, threw for 3,547 yards, 22 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in his best season. Keenum went on to throw for 3,890 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions the following year as a starter for the Denver Broncos.
Tyson Bagent
An undrafted free agent who became an instant fan favorite since joining the team in 2023, Tyson Bagent has been the top backup since he joined the Bears. In 2023, Bagent filled in as an injury replacement for former starter Justin Fields, where he threw for 859 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions in four starts.
Austin Reed
An undrafted free agent last season, Austin Reed spent all of the year on the practice squad after throwing for 123 yards and a touchdown in the preseason. He was signed to a reserve/future contract in January.

Baylor men's basketball begins summer practice with entirely new roster
Baylor coach Scott Drew had plenty of players for the first practice of the summer Wednesday, about two months after the team photo from last season was widely circulated on social media with an X marked over all 14 of those players since none were returning to the Bears. Only four of those players exhausted their college eligibility. Nine others left in the transfer portal and one-and-done guard VJ Edgecombe could become Baylor's highest pick ever in the NBA draft later this month. "Guys you didn't want to lose and were valuable, we haven't had many that we've lost. Whenever you do, that just tears at a coach, because you feel like you didn't do your job," Drew said this week. "With the portal, I think we've all gotten used to a lot more turnover in a hurry, and not to take things necessarily personal." The Bears rebuilt their roster with eight transfers and a four-player signing class with a five-star prospect and the son of an NBA champion. Among the 14 players at the first practice was Cameron Carr, the former Tennessee guard who transferred to Baylor in the middle of last season, long after that team photo session. One of the former Bears was guard Robert Wright, who averaged 11.5 points and 4.2 assists a game as a freshman last season and had reportedly agreed to a lucrative NIL deal to stay before transferring to BYU for an even bigger package. "You know people are going to leave. Rob, obviously, was someone we had an agreement with. When you make an agreement, you think you're done," Drew said, without getting into any specifics. "Obviously that was a surprise to us, but again, the staff did a great job of putting together a roster and team. That's part of, hopefully, the House settlement, where you get to a point where you know who's on your team and when they're locked in, they're locked in." The eight incoming transfers have more than 500 games played combined, including guards Dan Skillings, who played 100 games over three years for Cincinnati, and JJ White, who started 75 of 99 games at Omaha over the same period. Juslin Bodo Bodo is a 7-foot post from Cameroon, who started all 71 of his games for the NCAA Tournament team High Point the past two seasons. Obi Agbim, a 6-foot-3 guard, was the Mountain West newcomer of the year after averaging 17.6 points and 3.4 assists in 29 games last season for Wyoming. Five-star prospect Tounde Yessoufou, a small forward from St. Joseph High School in California, leads the signing class that also includes Andre Iguodala II, whose father was a four-time champion over 19 NBA seasons with four teams; Italian forward Maikcol Perez and big man May Soyoye. Baylor, Gonzaga and Houston are the only teams to win at least one game in each of the past six NCAA Tournaments, though the Bears have lost in the second round the past four years since their national championship in 2021. Drew and his staff will get an early look at the new squad with Baylor representing the United States at the World University Games next month in Germany. "Any year you get a foreign tour, it's huge. ... Since we're returning 0.0 (percent of our) scoring, this give us all an opportunity," Drew said. "The games will be good for those that can play in it. But the practices will be great for everyone. And then, the one thing everybody leaves out is you do these team-bonding activities. There's nothing better than being overseas, that really brings you together a lot more than when you have all the distractions you do in the United States."

Vikings Coach Breaks Silence on JJ McCarthy's Progress
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Minnesota Vikings and second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy are a major topic of discussion within the NFL. Leading up to the 2025 season, there are many questions swirling about whether or not he can be a true franchise quarterback. Sam Darnold put together a strong season in 2024. He led the Vikings to a 14-3 record, but the run came up short in the playoffs. Minnesota lost in the Wild Card round to the Los Angeles Rams. Heading into the offseason, keeping Darnold was viewed as a legitimate option. However, he chose to sign with the Seattle Seahawks on a three-year, $100.5 million contract. J.J. Photo byAfter Darnold chose to leave town, rumors circled around the Vikings and future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He was reportedly very interested in playing for Minnesota, but the team opted to stick with McCarthy and pass on Rodgers. He hasn't taken a single NFL regular season snap, but has been handed the keys to the franchise. There is no denying the elite talent and potential that McCarthy possesses. There is a good chance he could live up to the hype and keep the Vikings in contention. But, there is also a chance that it's too early and he could fail. Minnesota offensive coordinator Wes Phillips spoke out on Wednesday and offered a major update about the second-year quarterback and his progression. "I think (J.J.) is right where he needs to be right now," Phillips said. "And right where we thought he'd be. I don't think he'd come up here and say he mastered the offense. Every rep is a learning rep." Read more: Vikings Fans Will Be Livid Over This Stunning Prediction It's clear that the Vikings are still confident in their young quarterback. On the outside, there are a lot of questions, but the team feels comfortable with the situation. That is good news for Minnesota. McCarthy does have the luxury of having Justin Jefferson to work with. He also has Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson. Aaron Jones in the backfield will take a lot of pressure off of the young signal caller as well. While there is undoubtedly a lot of pressure on McCarthy, the Vikings have put him in the best situation possible. Hopefully, he's able to come out and prove the team right for passing on Rodgers or any other option and giving him the chance to prove himself in 2025.
