Partner of charity boss found stabbed to death in home after gas explosion appears in court charged with her murder
Annabel Rook, 46, was found dead at her address in Dumont Road, Stoke Newington, North London just before 5am on June 17.
Clifton George, 44, appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court charged with murdering Ms Rook and arson with recklessness as to whether life would be endangered.
He was remanded in custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on September 24 while his trial was fixed for June 1 2026.
Prosecutor Nicholas Hearn said: 'We invite the court to fix a four week trial date.
'We understand that June 1 2026 is a date that the court can accommodate, and we ask the court to fix that trial date today.'
Judge Oscar Del Fabbro told George: 'You will next attend here on September 24 when you can expect to be arraigned, that is to enter for pleas. If necessary further directions will be given.'
Police were called to Ms Rook's house along with 40 firefighters after the gas explosion.
The front bay window of the property was completely blown out that morning, with debris including plants, wooden shutters and glass scattered across the street.
Two children, aged seven and nine, were also taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident but are not thought to have been inside the home when the explosion happened.
Ms Rook co-founded charity MamaSuze CIC supporting refugee and migrant women.
Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who is in charge of policing for the Central East Basic Command Unit, said yesterday: 'Our thoughts continue to remain with the family and friends of Annabel as they navigate this devastating loss.
'We ask that the public refrain from speculation and respect their privacy at this time, and we thank the Hackney community for their ongoing support.'
Ms Rook's family have said they were 'struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy.
'We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend and mother.'
In the tribute released through the Met Police the family said: 'Annabel was a truly wonderful woman. She touched the hearts of so many.
'She gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged whether it was in refugee camps in Africa or setting up MamaSuze in London, to enhance the lives of survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence.
'We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.'
MamaSuze said in a statement it was 'devastated by the loss of our beloved co-founder' adding:
'Annabel was a profound force for good in the world, dedicating her working life to supporting women survivors.'

Face-recognition tech will be used without bias at festival, Met boss says
The facial recognition technology deployed at this year's Notting Hill Carnival has "significantly improved" from previous years and will be used without bias, the Metropolitan Police has said. Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley said the live facial recognition (LFR) technology will help locate any dangerous individuals attending the carnival over the August bank holiday weekend. He was responding to concerns raised by 11 groups, who in a letter to the commissioner claimed the technology was a "mass surveillance tool that treats all carnival-goers as potential suspects" and has "no place at one of London's biggest cultural celebrations". It also said that LFR technology was "less accurate for women and people of colour" in certain settings. Sir Mark said that when the technology was used at the carnival in 2016 and 2017, it "did not build public confidence", but has since "significantly improved" and now performs to a "much higher standard". He added that the force has selected the algorithm it uses "with care" and knows how to use it in a non-discriminatory way. The letter, signed by groups including Liberty and Big Brother Watch, said there is "no clear legal basis" for Scotland Yard's use of LFR. The letter added: "Notting Hill Carnival is an event that specifically celebrates the British African Caribbean community, yet the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) is choosing to use a technology with a well-documented history of inaccurate outcomes and racial bias." Rebecca Vincent, interim director at Big Brother Watch, said she is "deeply disappointed" that the Met "has chosen to dig its heels in" after the call to scrap the "Orwellian" technology. She added: "We all want criminals off the streets, but turning (the) carnival into a mass police line-up is not the way to do it." Around 7,000 police officers and staff will be on duty each day throughout the weekend. Police will use LFR cameras to identify individuals listed as wanted in the national police database. Meanwhile, a UK retail facial recognition system has reported its highest-ever monthly total of suspect alerts, its operators say. Facewatch said in July 2025, it sent 43,602 alerts to subscriber retail stores - the equivalent of more than 10,000 suspects flagged every week for the first time. The figures also represent a 134.8% increase compared to July 2024. Facewatch reported a total of 407,771 alerts over the 12 months leading up to 31 July, with current live data indicating that the upward trend is continuing into August.

Shamed Labour councillor who was paid £42k while on bail for sexually abusing girl jailed for 27 months
A shamed Labour councillor has been jailed after grooming and sexually abusing a schoolgirl. David Graham, 43, was yesterday handed a 27-month prison term after being found guilty of having sex with the 15-year-old girl. A crowd gathered outside Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court in Fife as the paedophile, who has earned more than £42,000 while on bail, was led out by guards into a waiting prison van amid tight security. Graham, who was suspended by Labour two years ago, denied the charge against him but was found guilty after a trial. Once a senior local politician, he was Fife Council's spokesman for health and social care and was also a member of the NHS Fife board. But despite his outwardly respectable appearance, over the course of more than six months he was having sexual activity with the girl in his home, office and car. Security camera footage showed Graham kissing the girl in Kirkcaldy town centre after meeting for hot chocolate. The disgraced councillor, who represented Buckhaven, Methil, and Wemyss Villages, would buy the girl gifts and they spent hours phoning and texting each other. Last month he was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a child on various occasions between February and August 2023 at locations in Fife and Edinburgh and also in his car. Scores of locals took to the streets outside his home after his conviction to demand he leave the area. It sparked a major police response, with officers equipped with riot shields leading him out of the property to safety. His parents' home has also been targeted. The conviction means Graham will now be disqualified from serving as a councillor. He faced criticism for not resigning earlier after it emerged he had earned more than £42,000 while sitting as an independent since being charged. Graham has not taken part in any full Fife Council meetings since his arrest in August 2023 but is said to have appeared at several area committees. However, it was reported his webcam was switched off and he was not involved in discussions. Graham accepted his full salary in 2023-24 and 2024-25, and with expenses earned £42,410.71. The crime came to light after a witness saw Graham stroking the girl's leg under the table. In a subsequent police search of his office in the Fife Renewables Innovation Centre in August 2023, officers found vital evidence containing Graham's DNA. The girl, now 17, said the first sexual contact was in his car not long after she had turned 15. His victim said she would meet him in St Andrews, Fife, they would go to Greggs for lunch and he stopped his car on country roads where he would assault her. Workers at a Kirkcaldy café saw them holding hands across a table, and security camera footage from various locations showed them walking hand-in-hand, embracing and kissing. Defence lawyer Chris Sneddon said his client still denied the offences but 'understands the impact the type of behaviour can have'. He acknowledged there was a 'potential for community reprisal', but urged the court to impose a non-custodial sentence. But jailing Graham, Sheriff Robert More said the offences showed an 'escalating and brazen course of sexual behaviour' and that he had 'undermined the trust' placed in him by the community. The sheriff, who said Graham's crime was of 'higher culpability', told the offender: 'The conduct took place at a variety of locations including the home you shared with your then partner. 'You were aware of how old the girl was and had been warned by her family to stay away from her. 'Laws are intended to protect children from those who would exploit their vulnerability.' Sheriff More put Graham on the sex offenders register for 10 years. David Ross, leader of Fife Council, said: 'David Graham should have resigned as soon as he was convicted if not before.'
