Film policy will be rolled out within two months: Kerala Min Saji Cherian

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Launching an elaborate exercise to identify major issues plaguing the Malayalam film industry, the state government is all set to introduce a comprehensive film policy which will address a host of concerns -- from casting couch to compensation and working hours to labour contracts.
The Kerala Film Policy Conclave, which began in the state capital on Saturday, discussed and debated threadbare key concerns in the sector and explored possible solutions for the same.
Speaking at the end of the first day's discussions, Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian said women's issues, labour laws, work-contract concerns and other significant issues in the industry will be addressed in the film policy, which is to be released within two months.
The minister said the government will not intervene in the internal matters of Malayalam cinema and weaken them, but rather provide institutional support to address issues faced by those working in the industry. Independent existence of films will never be compromised, but measures to strengthen practices like formulation of an internal complaints committee, ensuring proper payments and sufficient break time for workers will be addressed, he said.
Stating that gender equality will be implemented in all senses through the policy, the minister said the formation of internal committees (ICs) with male and female members is also being considered. Measures will be tightened to increase women's safety on sets. Other benefits like providing maternity leave for women, setting up nurseries for children of film workers are also being explored. Provisions to legally combat cyber-bullying are also being considered.

Kathir Interview: I don't want audience to be prejudiced against my films

They say you can only do a thing for the first time once, and Kathir had his acting debut with Madha Yaanai Koottam in 2013. 12 years later, he is back to doing the same thing for the first time, again. Meesha, his maiden Malayalam film, hit screens on August 1, and the actor is a bundle of nerves. This might sound strange as we are talking about someone who has proved his acting credentials, courtesy of his performances in Pariyerum Perumal, Vikram Vedha, and Suzhal. Still, Kathir believes every film is a new chapter and every role a new opportunity to redefine himself. Excited and nervous about his Malayalam entry, Kathir calls it a chance to reinvent and experience the magic of a 'first time' all over again. Excerpts:

Urvashi Questions 71st National Award Jury: "'How Did Shah Rukh Khan Win Best Actor?"

New Delhi: The 71st National Film Awards were announced on August 1, and Shah Rukh Khan 's fans had a big reason to celebrate. The superstar bagged his first-ever National Award for Best Actor for his role in Jawan – a major milestone in his 33-year-long career. But not everyone is convinced about the decision. South actress Urvashi, who won Best Supporting Actress for Ullozhukku, has opened up about what she feels is a lack of fairness by the jury. In a chat with Asianet News, she pointed out a major concern: veteran Malayalam actor Vijayaraghavan only received the Best Supporting Actor award, even though his performance, according to her, deserved more. 'Vijayaraghavan is such a great actor. What exactly did the jury consider to distinguish between Vijayaraghavan's and Shah Rukh Khan's performances? How did one become a supporting actor and the other the best actor? On what criteria? We should raise such questions, as we too are taxpaying citizens. Kutettan (referring to Vijayaraghavan) has decades of experience in cinema. The film wasn't a big-budget, 250-day shoot kind of project like those in other languages,' she said. Urvashi further talked about how committed Vijayaraghavan was to his role in Pookkaalam, where he played a 100-year-old man. She mentioned that she was offered the role of his on-screen partner in the same film but had to say no because of the intense makeup demands. 'I was initially approached to play his pair in Pookkaalam. Still, I declined because the role required me to undergo a significant physical transformation, for which I would have had to be in the makeup chair for several hours. I told them, even if you pay me crores, I wouldn't do it. But he, at his age, endured all of that and performed. That alone deserves at least a Special Mention. How is he only a supporting actor? On what basis was that decided? That's all I'm asking — there must be some fairness,' Urvashi added. While Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor title with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail, Vijayaraghavan's award came in the supporting actor category. He played opposite veteran actress K. P. A. C. Leela in Pookkaalam, a Malayalam film released in 2023. Interestingly, Urvashi also shared her Best Supporting Actress award with Janki Bodiwala, who won for her work in the Gujarati film Vash.
