Young Tigers hope to make amends
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia seek redemption at the Under-23 Asian Cup qualifiers in Bangkok next month. To do so, which means qualify for the final round in Saudi Arabia, Young Tigers need to top Group F against Lebanon, Mongolia and hosts Thailand, or finish among the top four ranked runners-up among 11 groups. The team, led by Nafuzi Zain, were left to lick their wounds following a disappointing early exit from last month's Asean Under-23 Championship in Indonesia. Defender Ahmad Aysar Hadi Shapri believes the coaches can rectify the team's weaknesses in the friendly matches against Kuwait and Oman in Bangkok during their centralised camp from Aug 18-Aug 31. "Our target is to qualify for Saudi Arabia, that is our goal. We want to make up for our failure in Jakarta. The coaches know what we need to fix," he said. Malaysia begin their Group F campaign against Lebanon on Sept 3, followed by Mongolia (Sept 6) and Thailand (Sept 9). "All three matches will be tough because every team are targeting qualification," said Ahmad. Malaysia failed to progress past the group stage of the Under-23 Asian Cup in 2022, Uzbekistan, and 2024, Qatar. Malaysia's best performance was in 2018 in China, where the team reached the quarter-finals before losing 2-1 to South Korea.

Nafuzi's boys to train in Bangkok for Asian campaign
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian team will have a training camp in Thailand to prepare for their Under-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers in Bangkok from Sept 3–9. Young Tigers coach Nafuzi Zain has listed 25 players for the camp in Bangkok from Aug 18-Aug 31. Malaysia will begin their qualifying campaign against Lebanon on Sept 3 before meeting Mongolia on Sept 6 and Thailand on Sept 9. In 2022 in Uzbekistan and 2024 in Qatar — Malaysia failed to progress past the Under-23 Asian Cup group stage. Malaysia's best performance was in 2018 in China, where they reached the quarter-finals before losing 2-1 to South Korea. Nafuzi's team hope to redeem themselves in Bangkok following their early exit in the Under-23 Asean Championship in Jakarta last month, where they lost 2-0 to the Philippines, beat Brunei 7-1 and drew 0-0 with Indonesia. Pakistan pull out of Asia Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: Political tension between Pakistan and India is said to have led to the Green Shirts pulling out of the Asia Cup in Bihar from Aug 29-Sept 7. Malaysian Hockey Confederation chief executive officer V. Jayanandan said the Asian federation announced on Monday three-time champions Pakistan's withdrawal, and Bangladesh are the replacement. The eight teams for the Asia Cup, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium, are hosts and world No. 8 India, Malaysia (No. 12), South Korea (No. 13), Japan (No. 18), China (No.22), Oman (No. 26) and Taiwan (No. 38). Malaysia are drawn with defending champions South Korea, Oman and Taiwan, while the other group has India, Japan, China and Bangladesh.
