Vasco:
The long-awaited project of widening the accident-prone St Andre's Church Square junction at Vasco has begun, bringing relief to motorists, pedestrians, and nearby school students.
The land acquisition for the same had been pending for years.
'The widening work of the St Andrew's Church Square junction is estimated at Rs 3 crores,' said Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, who initiated the process again.
He said the work includes widening the road by 4m from Dr Ozler Forum building to Hiralal Thakker House, adding a walking track, and installing traffic signals.
'The narrow stretch from Dr Ozler Forum building to Hiralal Thakker House has become a death trap for motorists and pedestrians. Several accidents were reported, including two fatal ones. Students from St Andrew's Institute, St Joseph Institute, govt school, and Mormugao municipal school face hardships while crossing the junction,' Salkar said.
'I have proposed traffic signals to improve discipline among motorists. The traffic usually comes to a standstill during peak hours, especially at school opening and closing hours,' said Salkar.
