
Strongest Solar Storm Ever 'Establishes a New Worst-Case Scenario'

New research has pinpointed the exact date when the strongest ever solar particle storm hit the Earth.
This identification of the event, which occurred in 12,350 B.C., rewrites what scientists considered possible when it comes to extreme space weather.
"Compared to the largest event of the modern satellite era—the 2005 particle storm—the ancient 12350 BC event was over 500 times more intense, according to our estimates," said paper author and physicist Kseniia Golubenko of Finland's University of Oulu in a statement.
At the core of this discovery is SOCOL:14C-Ex, a novel chemistry–climate model developed by Golubenko and fellow Oulu astrophysicist professor Ilya Usoskin.
Designed to reconstruct solar particle events under ancient glacial climate conditions, the model allowed the international team to pinpoint and assess an extreme radiocarbon spike during the waning stages of the last Ice Age.
"This event establishes a new worst-case scenario," Golubenko said in a statement.
"Understanding its scale is critical for evaluating the risks posed by future solar storms to modern infrastructure like satellites, power grids, and communication systems."

Their analysis confirmed that the event was about 18 percent stronger than previous record-holder, a storm in AD 775 recorded in tree-ring records . Other notable solar particle storms have occurred in 7,176 B.C., 5,259 B.C., 663 B.C. and 994 A.D.—but none came close to the ferocity of the newly-identified ancient event.
The discovery was made possible through radiocarbon measurements of wood samples recently unearthed in the French Alps dating back some 14,300 years.
While earlier observations had noted a significant increase in radiocarbon from that era, scientists lacked a reliable model to interpret the magnitude of the event—until now.
The SOCOL:14C-Ex model was validated using known data from the AD 775 storm and successfully extended to simulate late Ice Age conditions. This validation across both Holocene and glacial periods marks a critical step forward in analyzing radiocarbon anomalies from different climatic and geomagnetic time periods.
What Are Solar Storms?
Solar particle storms, while rare, pose a significant risk to modern technology. When they occur, these sudden explosions of energy, magnetic fields and material blast Earth with high-energy particles that can disrupt satellites, navigation systems, aviation, and power grids.
The infamous Carrington Event of 1859, often cited as the worst-case scenario for solar storms, was not a particle storm. This distinction matters because particle storms can have even more widespread atmospheric effects, and the new findings revise our understanding of solar physics and such space weather extremes.

The company then provides clients with a detailed report, which shows their embryo's results. "Sort, compare, and choose your embryos based on what matters most to you," Nucleus Genomics said. Nucleus Genomics It tests for markers for common conditions like type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, and high blood pressure, and genetic contributions to various cancers (e.g., breast, colorectal, ovarian). It also covers mental health risks, such as depression and anxiety disorders, as well as physical traits like eye color, hair color, height, BMI, and even IQ-related markers. The test offers a comprehensive genetic profile, allowing prospective parents to compare multiple embryos on these different attributes before choosing one for implantation. "Life span has dramatically increased in the last 150 years," Kian Sadeghi, the company's founder and chief executive, told the Wall Street Journal. "DNA testing to predict and reduce chronic disease can make it happen again." The 25-year-old told the Journal he sees no distinction between individuals using DNA tests to understand their own risks and those screening and ranking embryos to select one likely to live a longer life. "It is the same underlying motivation," Sadeghi said. "It is about living a longer, healthier life." 30-Year Study Reveals Coffee's Surprising Effect on Women Over 70

The findings suggest that a daily cup of coffee may do more than energize—it might support physical and mental health into an aging adult's golden years. The research, which was presented at the NUTRITION 2025 conference by Harvard T.H. "Given its rich mix of bioactives, we wanted to examine how midlife intake may relate to healthy aging outcomes decades later—especially in a well-characterized cohort with repeated dietary measures." Researchers found that women who drank regular, caffeinated coffee—not tea or decaf—had a modest, but measurable increase in the likelihood of meeting criteria for "healthy aging" by age 70. These criteria included being free from 11 major chronic diseases, having intact physical function and mental health, and reporting no memory complaints. "Caffeine likely plays a role, but it's not the only factor," Mahdavi said. "Caffeinated coffee contains a broader range of bioactive compound—including certain polyphenols and diterpenes—that may be altered or diminished during decaffeination. "It's also possible that individuals who drink decaf differ systematically in health or behavior, though we adjusted for many of those variables." What To Know On average, women in the study who aged in a healthy way consumed around 315 mg of caffeine daily—roughly equivalent to three small cups of coffee. Each additional cup was tied to a 2-to-5% increase in the odds of healthy aging, up to a threshold of five small cups per day. The researchers noted that, for most people, two cups of coffee per day are generally safe and potentially beneficial. By contrast, soda consumption was associated with a 20-to-26% reduction in the likelihood of healthy aging, which suggests not all caffeine sources offer similar benefits. "The clearest takeaway was how consistent the findings were," Mahdavi told Newsweek. "Even after accounting for factors like smoking, [body mass index] and overall diet quality, moderate caffeinated coffee intake in midlife remained positively associated with healthy aging. "By contrast, cola consumption was associated with a substantially lower likelihood of aging well—nearly four times the magnitude, in the opposite direction." Health Benefits of Coffee Previous research has linked coffee consumption to a range of health benefits, including a reduced risk of several chronic conditions. Studies published in journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and Circulation (NEJM) have found associations between regular coffee consumption and lower rates of Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, stroke and cardiovascular disease. A 2012 study in NEJM involving more than 400,000 participants found that people who drank coffee had a lower risk of death over the study period, whether it was caffeinated or decaf. A 2017 umbrella review in The BMJ found that coffee consumption was, "more often associated with benefit than harm," for a range of health outcomes. However, researchers have also cautioned that drinking too much coffee may pose risks for people with certain conditions, or low caffeine tolerance. "Not all beverages are equal when it comes to long-term health," Mahdavi said. "Moderate caffeinated coffee—1-to-3 cups per day—may support healthy aging, but more importantly, it can be part of a broader lifestyle that includes nutrient-rich foods, regular physical activity and avoiding harmful exposures. "The study adds to the growing body of evidence that everyday dietary choices, even in midlife, matter for how we age."
