Residents concerned over rising utility bills, Eversource responds
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – Residents across western Massachusetts are reporting their Eversource utility bills substantially increasing and one Mayor is taking action.
West Springfield Mayor William Reichelt filed a resolution, requesting that the Massachusetts State Legislature and/or the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities investigate the cause.
'The recent increases in utility rates have had a direct and troubling impact on many of our families,' said Mayor Reichelt. 'Particularly those who are already facing financial strain due to inflation and other ongoing challenges.'
Mayor Reichelt said there should be transparency in the pricing process.
Eversource spokesperson Priscilla Ress told 22News, that the usage of electricity is up, but the total electric rate has actually decreased since the end of 2024.
Ress saying in Massachusetts the usage of electricity in January was 19% higher than in December and 39% higher than in November.
State Representative Orlando Ramos is asking the Department of Public Utilities and the Attorney General's office to investigate the rate increase.'I believe that the increase people are seeing may be a result of an unauthorized rate increase,' said Representative Ramos. 'How else can Eversource explain charging their customers more this year for using the same amount of energy they used last year? I'm asking both the DPU and the Attorney General's office to investigate the legitimacy of this increase.'
She said, 'The Department of Public Utilities reviews and must approve any rate adjustment before it goes into effect.' Saying all rate adjustments go through a comprehensive public process to be evaluated.
As for natural gas, Ress told 22News, that any increase customers have seen in the bills they've received for the last month compared to the previous month has been primarily driven by that increased usage as rates have not significantly changed between November and January.
There was a price adjustment for natural gas for Eversource customers in Massachusetts on November 1, 2024, to account for the cost, supply, and demand as well as a few other factors.
Ress further told 22News, that January 2025 was about 15% colder than December 2024 and 10% colder than January 2024.
The much colder temperatures and the November price adjustment are the primary factors customers could see their bill increase.
Ress said it's important to note that even if customers do not raise their thermostats, more energy is used to maintain the same temperature setting in colder weather.
Mayor Reichelt isn't the only one calling for an investigation. Springfield State Rep. Orlando Ramos today also called on the DPU to look into Eversource rates.

Environmental activists push for climate resiliency fund
BOSTON (WWLP) – Environmental activists and lawmakers held a legislative briefing on Wednesday, pushing for long-term funding to mitigate climate change. Incoming education commissioner outlines priorities These advocates spoke about two priority bills. One is dubbed the 'AHEAD Act,' which more than doubles the deeds excise tax on property sales to create revenue for fighting climate change and expanding affordable housing. It would also create tax credits for low-income home sellers and first-time homebuyers. The second would establish a new fee on real estate property insurance premiums to pay for a climate resiliency fund. This fund is intended to support community-based fund's legislative sponsor says this action is overdue. 'We're falling behind more and more every single day, and there is no plan B for us to make up that time, that funding,' said Everett Senator Sal DiDomenico. One lawmaker says this work primarily supports low-income communities. They say those with financial resources can move when the climate becomes intolerable, and those less fortunate will be left behind. 'This work is work rooted in solving inequities and responding to those populations most harmed and most in need of support and services,' said Boston Representative Sam Montaño. While climate change mitigation is a policy priority in the Bay State, the federal government is focusing its resources elsewhere, which could preclude state and national cooperation on solutions. ICE agents wear masks when making arrests in Massachusetts due to safety concerns, Acting Director says
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A news conference was held earlier this week, revealing nearly 1,500 people were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Massachusetts, and why agents are seen wearing masks. ICE agents in Massachusetts have come under public scrutiny for wearing masks during arrest operations, prompting a pointed response from ICE's Acting Director Todd Lyons during a news conference earlier this week. Protests held in Amherst following arrests by ICE Lyons returned to the podium to explain the reason behind the use of facial coverings by agents, citing escalating threats to officers' personal safety. 'A lot of agencies were invited to come out two weeks ago in Los Angeles, where we ran an operation where ICE offices were doxed,' Lyons told reporters. 'So let's just say that again, people are out there taking photos of the names, their faces, and posting them online with death threats to their family and themselves.' The acting director emphasized that the masks are a protective measure, not an attempt to obscure accountability. 'I'm sorry if people are offended by them wearing masks, but I'm not going to let my officers and agents go out there and put their lives on the line and their family on the line because people don't like what immigration enforcement is,' Lyons said. According to Lyons, ICE agents were also recently involved in a joint operation with the U.S. Secret Service, during which an individual was arrested for targeting law enforcement families online. 'We arrested someone who was going online, taking their photos, posting their families, their kids' Instagram, their kids' Facebook, and targeting them,' Lyons said. 'So let me ask—is that the issue here, that we're just upset about the masks, or is anyone upset with the fact that ICE officers' families were labeled terrorists?' Operation Patriot nets 1,500 arrested by ICE in Massachusetts The comments come amid heightened national debate over immigration enforcement tactics, including online privacy and safety for government employees involved in controversial federal operations. The news conference also revealed that nearly 1,500 individuals had been arrested by ICE in Massachusetts as part of recent enforcement actions.
