
Only 15 electric vehicle brands in China will be financially viable by 2030, AlixPartners says

These 15 brands are projected to account for approximately 75% of China's EV and plug-in hybrid market by the end of the decade, each averaging annual sales of 1.02 million vehicles, AlixPartners said, without specifying brand names.
However, consolidation in China is expected to proceed more slowly than in other markets, said Stephen Dyer, head of AlixPartners' automotive practice in Asia, because local governments may support non-viable brands due to their importance to regional economies, employment and supply chains.
"China is one of the most competitive NEV (new energy vehicle) markets in the world, with intense price wars, rapid innovation, and new entrants constantly raising the bar," Dyer said.
"This environment has driven remarkable advances in technology and cost efficiency, but it has also left many companies struggling to achieve sustainable profitability."
China's automotive market, the world's largest, is currently facing a price war and significant overcapacity, both of which are straining profitability. Aside from BYD and Li Auto, no other publicly listed Chinese EV maker has achieved full-year profitability.
Chinese regulators have called for automakers to halt the price war. However, Dyer said it would likely continue, but through "hidden" factors such as insurance subsidies and zero-interest financing rather than direct price cuts. The capacity utilisation ratio at Chinese car plants fell to an average of 50% in China last year, the lowest in a decade, pressuring profits.

The Xiaomi incident has triggered increased scrutiny, with Beijing determined to prevent the overpromotion of these systems' capabilities. Officials are walking a fine line, encouraging rapid technological advancement without compromising road safety. Analysts suggest this balanced approach, if executed well, could offer China a competitive edge over markets like the United States, where regulatory frameworks for autonomous vehicles remain fragmented. Under current Chinese regulations, systems that control steering, acceleration, and braking under limited conditions are permitted, but drivers must remain alert. The use of terms such as 'autonomous' or 'smart' in marketing is prohibited to avoid misleading consumers. The revised regulations are expected to include stricter standards for hardware and software that monitor driver attentiveness and response times. State-backed firms such as Dongfeng and Huawei have been enlisted to assist in drafting the rules, with the government seeking public feedback over a month-long consultation period ending Friday. Despite the push for caution, Chinese authorities are continuing efforts to roll out more advanced Level 3 systems. These allow drivers to take their eyes off the road in specific scenarios, such as highway driving, while still requiring them to be ready to retake control. State-owned Changan had been preparing to begin Level 3 validation tests in April, but those were halted in the wake of the Xiaomi crash. A source familiar with the matter indicated the government aims to resume testing later this year, with an initial Level 3 vehicle approval targeted for 2026. Driver-assistance technology has become a major area of competition in China's increasingly crowded car market. Level 2 systems, which still require driver supervision, have already become widespread, featured in vehicles from domestic giants like BYD and foreign players such as Tesla. According to Canalys, over 60 per cent of new vehicles sold in China this year are expected to offer Level 2 capabilities. Companies have also been able to lower costs enough to offer such features at little or no additional expense. BYD, for instance, now includes its 'God's Eye' driving software across all models without a surcharge. Globally, China is positioning itself to lead in assisted-driving technology much as it did with electric vehicles. Last year, the government selected nine automakers for public road testing aimed at advancing self-driving technologies. As part of its regulatory shift, China will also hold carmakers and component suppliers legally accountable for system failures, a move that mirrors similar legislation passed in the UK last year. At the Shanghai Auto Show in April, firms including Huawei and Geely's Zeekr showcased Level 3-ready technologies. Huawei claimed its system, designed for highways, had undergone over 600 million kilometres of simulated testing. Zeekr unveiled the 9X luxury SUV, stating it was ready for mass production in the third quarter, pending regulatory approval. In contrast, global brands like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen have been more conservative. While highlighting progress in assisted-driving features, they have refrained from introducing Level 3 systems, citing liability concerns and cost barriers. China said Friday that the United States has eased certain export restrictions in line with a "hard-won" framework reached at talks last month, warning against "blackmail and coercion" as the countries attempt to de-escalate a ruinous trade war. "Currently, both teams are working quickly to implement the results outlined in the London framework", China's commerce ministry said in a statement, referring to the June meetings. Beijing is now "reviewing applications for export licences of controlled items that meet the requirements", it said. "The US side is also taking corresponding actions and has lifted a series of restrictive measures against China, the details of which have been communicated to the Chinese side," it added. The world's two top economies agreed to an outline of a deal to walk back from the brink of staggering tariffs at last month's meetings in London, with concessions including Beijing's resumption of key rare earth exports. Washington has also recently lifted rules for certain exports to China, including by removing licence requirements for shipping ethane to the country, according to a Bloomberg report this week. China's commerce ministry statement added that "the London framework was hard-won" -- and warned that "blackmail and coercion will lead nowhere". "We hope the United States will... continue to work in the same direction as China (and) further correct its erroneous practices." Prior to the London talks, Beijing and Washington had agreed to temporarily lower steep tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's products. But US officials later accused Beijing of violating the pact and slow-walking its approvals of export licences for rare earths -- the global production of which is dominated by China. As Trade Tensions Rise, A Look At How Trump Has Roiled Financial Markets
With sweeping tariffs on friend and foe, US President Donald Trump has roiled financial markets and sparked a surge in economic uncertainty -- and tensions are mounting days before a fresh volley of higher duties are due to kick in. Here is a rundown of what Trump has implemented in his second presidency, with levies on dozens of economies set to bounce from 10 percent to a range between 11 percent and 50 percent on Wednesday. Global tariffs While Trump imposed a 10 percent tariff on most US trading partners in April, the rate is set to rise for dozens of economies including the European Union and Japan come Wednesday. To avoid higher levies, countries have been rushing to strike deals with Washington. So far, the UK and Vietnam have struck pacts with the United States, while China has managed to temporarily lower tit-for-tat duties. There are notable exceptions to the duty. Immediate US neighbors Canada and Mexico, which were separately targeted over illegal immigration and fentanyl, are not affected by the 10 percent global tariff. Also off the hook are copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and lumber -- although these are sectors that Trump is mulling levies on. Gold and silver, as well as energy commodities, are excluded too. China focus China has borne the brunt of Trump's levies. The world's two biggest economies engaged in an escalating tariffs war this year before a temporary pullback. Both sides imposed triple-digit tariffs on each other's goods at one point, a level effectively described as a trade embargo. After high level talks, Washington agreed to lower its levies on Chinese goods to 30 percent and Beijing slashed its own to 10 percent. The US level is higher as it includes a 20 percent tariff imposed over China's alleged role in the global fentanyl trade. Autos, metals Trump has also targeted individual business sectors in his second term. In March, he imposed a 25 percent levy on steel and aluminum imports and last month doubled them to 50 percent. He has also rolled out a 25 percent tariff on imported autos, although those imported under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) can qualify for a lower levy. Trump's auto tariffs impact vehicle parts too, while the president has issued rules to ensure automakers paying vehicle tariffs will not also be charged for certain other duties. Canada, Mexico Canadian and Mexican products were initially hard hit by 25 percent US tariffs, with a lower rate for Canadian energy. Trump targeted both neighbors saying they did not do enough on illegal immigration and the flow of illicit drugs across borders. But he eventually announced exemptions for goods entering his country under the USMCA, covering large swaths of products. Potash, used as fertilizer, got a lower rate as well. Other threats Beyond expansive tariffs on Chinese products, Trump ordered the closure of a duty-free exemption for low-value parcels from the country. This adds to the cost of importing items like clothing and small electronics. Trump has also opened the door for 25 percent tariffs on goods from countries importing Venezuelan oil. He has threatened similar "secondary tariffs" involving Russian oil. And he has ordered investigations into imports of copper, lumber, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and critical minerals that could eventually bring new duties. Legal challenges Trump's sweeping tariffs on countries have faced legal challenges. The US Court of International Trade ruled in May that Trump had overstepped his authority with across-the-board global levies. It blocked many of the duties from going into effect, prompting the Trump administration's challenge, and a US federal appeals court has since allowed the duties to remain while it considers the case.
