Ireland to Ban Israeli Settlement Goods
Ireland is moving forward with plans to introduce legislation banning the import of goods from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, despite strong opposition from the United States and pro-Israel groups.
The move comes after more than a dozen members of the US Congress urged that Ireland be added to a list of countries boycotting Israel if the bill is passed.
Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris
said
that, despite pressure, Ireland intends to proceed with the legislation. His comments follow mounting global criticism of Israel after the country's security cabinet approved a plan to take control of Gaza City.
Ireland's governing coalition, comprising Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, and a group of independents, confirmed in its January government program its commitment to introducing a ban on goods from the occupied Palestinian territories.
A party committee has also recommended that the government approve the bill and expand the ban to cover trade in services linked to the settlements.
Harris stressed that Ireland is not alone in seeking to end trade with the occupied territories. Speaking to reporters on Friday, he said people in Ireland, Europe and around the world are deeply concerned about what he described as genocidal actions in Gaza, including children facing starvation, and vowed to use all tools available to address the situation.

Israeli military to displace Gaza City's population to new ‘humanitarian zone' in strip's south
Ahead of a military advance to fully occupy Gaza City, Israeli officials said they were finalising steps on Sunday to evacuate the city's residents to areas in the south of the Gaza Strip. Israel officials have previously said they intend to construct a 'humanitarian city' to confine displaced Palestinians in Rafah, on the border with Egypt, where the government has held concerns since the outset of Israel's genocidal war that such a plan could push tens of thousands of Palestinians toward Egypt's eastern border to seek refuge in Sinai. 'Starting from Sunday,' Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a post on X on Saturday evening, 'Gaza residents will be provided with tents and other shelter equipment.' He said the step came ahead of the relocation of the city's population, 'from combat zones to the south of the enclave to ensure their safety.' The Israeli military is accelerating plans recently approved at the political level to invade and establish complete security control over Gaza City — Gaza's largest urban center, currently home to around 1 million people. Intense ground and aerial bombardment has already killed dozens, and forced residents of east Gaza City to evacuate, especially residents of the southeastern Zeitoun neighborhood. The Israeli Army Radio reported on Sunday that the chief of staff had convened an expanded meeting with the Southern Command to finalize plans for the city's 'capture.' It would be impossible to accommodate all the expelled residents of Gaza City in the 'humanitarian zones in central Gaza and Mawasi camps that exist today,' its correspondent said. The camps of Bureij, Maghazi and Nuseirat in central Gaza, as well as the tented coastal area of Mawasi, are already packed with residents displaced from across the strip by nearly two years of war. Instead, 'the IDF will be required to withdraw from a certain area that it currently controls in the southern Gaza Strip, in order to turn it into a humanitarian zone for hundreds of thousands of evacuees from Gaza City,' according to the army radio. The schedule of operations has been advanced, pushing planned maneuvers forward in schedule to the coming weeks, with the target of evacuating the city's population as well as establishing full operational control inside the city by October 7, the military broadcaster stated. 'The UN and its partners will seize the opportunity this opens,' the spokesperson said. A Mada Masr correspondent in Gaza noted, however, that residents were yet to report the provision of further tents or supplies to support living conditions for those fleeing the Israeli forces advancing into Gaza City. Egypt's foreign Ministry issued a statement Sunday addressing reports of Israeli talks with several countries on hosting Palestinians displaced from Gaza, in which it reiterated its categorical rejection of any Israeli attempt to displace Palestinians, whether within Gaza or abroad, stressing that it will not accept or participate in any measures that undermines the Palestinian cause.

Egypt reaffirms rejection of Gaza displacement plans as war, protests intensify
Egypt has reiterated its categorical rejection of any Israeli plans to forcibly displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, describing such proposals as 'a crime that is politically, morally, and legally unacceptable.' In a statement, the foreign ministry stressed that Cairo would not allow itself 'under any circumstances to be a party to this crime,' warning that displacement would be 'an unforgivable historic crime' with severe regional and international repercussions. It urged the international community to shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities, labelling the proposals as war crimes and violations of international humanitarian law. Meanwhile, Haaretz reported that Egypt and Qatar—key mediators in ceasefire talks—may soon present a new framework for an agreement, amid signals of flexibility from Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, however, insisted that any deal must involve the release of all hostages in a single phase, Hamas' disarmament, continued Israeli security control over Gaza, and the establishment of a new governing authority. On the ground, Gaza's health ministry said hospitals recorded 47 deaths and 226 injuries in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll since 7 October 2023 to 61,944, with 155,886 wounded. Seven more people, including two children, died of starvation over the same period, raising the total deaths from hunger and malnutrition to 258, among them 110 children. Israel's army radio reported that Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has approved an operational plan to occupy Gaza City and refugee camps in central Gaza, with the stated aim of displacing civilians by 7 October this year. Hamas condemned the move as a 'major war crime' and 'an announcement of mass extermination and forced expulsion.' In Cairo, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa arrived Sunday for talks with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. He is also expected to travel to El-Arish to oversee aid deliveries. Inside Israel, protests escalated as families of hostages launched a general strike, blocking major highways and demanding a prisoner swap deal. Demonstrators carried signs reading: 'We won't let the government sacrifice the hostages.' The strike gained support from private companies, municipalities, and civic organisations. Netanyahu criticised the protests, warning that calls to end the war without dismantling Hamas could 'lead to a repeat of October 7.' On the humanitarian front, Israel reopened the Kerem Shalom crossing Sunday to allow aid into Gaza, while Egypt continued to send convoys via Rafah. The Egyptian Red Crescent said 50 aid trucks were dispatched as part of its 16th convoy. Gaza's government media office accused Israel of 'deliberately starving more than 100,000 children and patients' by blocking the entry of baby formula, nutritional supplements, frozen meats, and vegetables. Tensions also rose diplomatically, with Israel Hayom reporting that Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar advised Netanyahu to close the French consulate in Jerusalem in retaliation for Paris' recognition of a Palestinian state. At the United Nations, special rapporteur Francesca Albanese cautioned against demonising Hamas, describing it as a political movement that came to power through what she called the most democratic Palestinian elections. Meanwhile, UNRWA warned that replacing its aid distribution system in Gaza with a U.S.-Israeli-backed mechanism would 'bring chaos and death,' urging instead a return to a unified UN-led humanitarian framework under international law.

Major Companies Participate in Israel's General Strike
