2025 Belmont Stakes: Best outfits from Saratoga Race Course

Fox Sports10 hours ago

The 2025 Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, takes place at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday.
The skies are set to clear and conditions are likely to improve in Saratoga Springs, New York after a morning of rain, but muddy conditions could remain on the track for this evening's race. Journalism (+160) is the slight favorite over Sovereignty (+200) and Baeza (+400), the three top-tier Thoroughbreds in this year's field.
While whichever horse ultimately wins the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes — which is being held in Saratoga Springs for the second consecutive year as renovations continue at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York — looms greatest, there's also plenty of people flashing style at the famed horsing event.
Here are some more of the best outfits from the Belmont Stakes, with photos courtesy of FOX Sports.

St. John's donor Mike Repole and Rick Pitino horses strike out at Belmont Stakes

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mike Repole walked downstairs from his first-row clubhouse VIP box at Saratoga and conferred with jockey John Velazquez on the edge of the winner's circle after Saturday's eighth race at Saratoga. The billionaire entrepreneur and St. John's basketball benefactor did not step inside. It was not his time. His horse, Fierceness, the winner of the 2024 Travers Stakes, the signature summer event at this historic track, finished second by 2 ¹/₂ lengths to California invader Raging Torrent in the $1 million Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap. While the 8-1 Raging Torrent earned an automatic bid to this fall's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher were left to pick up the pieces. 'If you told me he'd finish ahead of White Abarrio and Just a Touch, I'd [believe I'd] be taking my picture in the winner's circle,' Repole told The Post. 'You know, it happens. We knew [Raging Torrent] was going to go for the lead. He got brave. I thought at the 3/8ths pole we had him, the quarter pole we had him. And then I saw him open up and, you know, I don't know. 'It was a tough, tough race and a tough, tough loss,' Repole said, 'and there's absolutely no excuse.' Raging Torrent's jockey, Frankie Dettori, praised his horse's will to win. 'At the quarter pole, I was in the lap of gods,' the 54-year-old Italian rider said. 'He showed great determination to get to the line. 3 Raging Torrent races past Fierceness to the finish line to win the Metropolitan Handicap on Belmon Stakes Day at Saratoga Race Course on June 7, 2025. JASON SZENES/ NY POST 'He puts his head down, even when [Fierceness] pressured me [and he fought really hard.' Fierceness, the sub-even-money favorite, got into trouble immediately breaking out of the Wilson chute, which sends horses directly into the middle of the first turn. 'Johnny [Velazquez] said he broke so sharply he kind of hit the gate and came back with some blood on his mouth from hitting the gate at the start,' Pletcher said. 'The first 16th of a mile was pretty rough. They were bouncing around trying to get position. After that he got into the exact position we wanted to, he just couldn't get by the horse in the lead.' 3 St. John's Red Storm head coach Rick Pitino speaks with the media before a game against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium, Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in Bronx, NY. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Repole said Fierceness likely will be targeted for the $1 million Grade 1 Whitney Stakes on Aug. 2 at Saratoga. In the 10th race, A.P. Kid, ridden by Velazquez and trained by Pletcher, ran past the leader at the top of the stretch and pulled away by five widening lengths. Repole and his contingent of 80 family and friends later watched long shot Uncaged finish out of the money in the Belmont Stakes. 3 Mike Repole watches his horse, Fierceness, finish second in the Metropolitan Handicap on Belmont Stakes day. Jason Szenes / New York Post Repole wasn't the only owner with St. John's connections to enter a horse on Belmont Stakes Day. Coach Rick Pitino's RAP Racing took a fourth place in the fifth race with Aggelos the Great. Pitino was not in attendance but told The Post in a text: 'We're disappointed. We all thought he was ready to win. But, you know, [it's] horse racing.' Pitino said he was told by jockey Manny Franco the horse did not like the muddy conditions.

Fox Facing Backlash Over Terry Bradshaw Decision at Belmont Stakes

Fox Facing Backlash Over Terry Bradshaw Decision at Belmont Stakes originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Horse racing is, unquestionably, its own kind of sport, defined as much by the pastel colors, fancy hats and overall decorum of its showcase events as much as by the beauty and grace of the horses who participate. Advertisement And so when the broadcast of this year's much-anticipated 157th Belmont Stakes, with a rematch between top 3-year-olds Journalism and Sovereignty in the offing, got rolling, there were the usual staples that racing fans have gotten accustomed to seeing. The race was held at Saratoga Race Course for the second straight year, as the track at Belmont is being overhauled, but there were familiar faces like handicapper Jonathon Kinchen, analyst/reporter Maggie Wolfendale and ex-jockey Richard Migliore. The race was being shown by Fox Sports, though, which meant the addition of outsiders like Curt Menefee and Charissa Thompson. That was mostly not objectionable. But the addition of former quarterback Terry Bradshaw--who does, in fairness, own a horse with Menefee that was running on Saturday--was a bridge too far for many racing fans. Fox leans on Bradshaw for about five months during the football season, and it seemed reasonable to keep him off this broadcast. Terry Bradshaw at Fox Sports media day at Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Author Sean Hackbarth noted on X, "NBC Sports needs the entire Triple Crown. Fox Sports is bad. Terry Bradshaw bad." Advertisement A fan added, "Can I watch the Belmont without a history lesson on Terry Bradshaw every 5 minutes?" Another lamented, "Imagine being a horse racing expert and you get your moment on TV on one of the very few days your sport gets to shine and you're ready to show your wisdom and spread love of your sport to the masses and then you're placed on equal footing to Terry Bradshaw. And still another: "Fox Sports broadcast of the Belmont is a joke with Terry Bradshaw." And it should be a good race, but still, why Bradshaw, one wondered: "The Belmont is gonna be a thriller. If I wagered, my pick would be the magnificent Journalism. But why is Fox devoting tons of screen time to ... checks notes ... Terry Bradshaw?!?" Advertisement Sometimes, too, a picture is worth 1,000 words. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 7, 2025, where it first appeared.

Sovereignty beats Journalism to win Belmont Stakes: Live reaction and analysis

Sovereignty wins two legs of this year's Triple Crown after winning the Kentucky Derby Associated Press Sovereignty has won today's 157th running of the Belmont Stakes, the third race in this year's Triple Crown. Sovereignty won two legs of this year's Triple Crown after winning the Kentucky Derby in May. Sovereignty beat Journalism, which won the Preakness Stakes, to the line for the win. The winning margin was three lengths. Baeza finished third. The race took place at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the second straight year as Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., is undergoing construction. GO FURTHER Sovereignty surges down the stretch to win the Belmont Stakes Connections: Sports Edition Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Teresa Genaro The rain has also dampened the traditional "run for the tables" to snag a picnic table in Saratoga's capacious and ordinarily beautiful backyard. People line up for hours outside the gates before they open and then dash to their favorite spots to claim a table. On most big days, all the tables are gone within a few minutes of the gates opening. This morning, an hour after the gates opened at 9 a.m. ET, there were still tables available. So when turf races are moved to the dirt (they are seldom canceled entirely), you have horses that run only or primarily or best on grass, and their trainers have to desire to run them on a sloppy dirt course. Often, the distance of the race is also changed, because of the different circumferences of the various courses. Those scratches then lead to very small fields, which makes for terrible betting and low prices. As of now, Race 9, the Grade 1, $500,000 Jaipur is still on the turf, as is Race 12, the Grade 1, $1 million Manhattan. Race 6, the Grade 2, $300,000 Wonder Again and race 10, the Grade 3, $300,000 Pennine Ridge are off the turf. The rain has been torrential since early this morning, and its effect on today's racing card is already profound. Four races, including two stakes have already been taken off the turf, and as of 11 a.m. ET, 38 horses have been scratched. Why does this matter? What's a little rain, anyway? Rain softens the grass courses, which can prove dangerous for horses and which can also destroy the courses when the loose soil is kicked up by the horses' hooves. Some horses also just don't like running on soft ground. The weather is definitely the story. It's been pouring, everything is muddy, the grass races are off the turf.
