
Hybe Latin America searches for new Latin band
New audition program to premiere June via Telemundo
Hybe Latin America, the Mexican subsidiary of Hybe, will launch a band audition program in partnership with US broadcaster Telemundo starting this June.
The survival music competition program titled "Pase a la Fama" aims to discover new talented Mexican bands, and will premiere June 8, local time. The program's title translates to "Pass to Fame."
Telemundo, a Spanish-language broadcaster under NBCUniversal, delivers a wide range of content including dramas, reality shows and news to Latino audiences across the US.
Fifty-five applicants will be selected to join the "Pase a la Fama" artist camp. While undergoing systematic training and fierce competition, their journey will be broadcast live on television. The final winners, whether as individuals or a band, will receive 140 million won ($100,000) in prize and the opportunity to sign a record deal with Hybe Latin America.
Edgar Barrera, a 21-time Latin Grammy Award winner and a Grammy Award recipient at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, will produce the program's theme song and original soundtrack. Celebrity judges for the show include singer and actress Ana Barbara, artist Adriel Favela and renowned songwriter Horacio Palencia — major figures in Mexico's popular music scene.

16th Korea Opera Festival to feature classics, originals and family works at Seoul Arts Center
Korea's leading celebration of opera returns this summer with the 16th edition of the Korea Opera Festival, featuring seven new and classic operas running from June 6 to July 13 across all three theaters of the Seoul Arts Center: the Opera House, CJ Towol Theater and Jayu Theater. The opera buffa fuses comedy and darkness in the story of the legendary libertine whose escapades end in ruin, framed by Mozart's masterful blend of drama and satire. Closing the Opera House schedule is "Dosan," a Korean original by Korea Arts Group that dramatizes the life of independence activist Ahn Chang-ho. Running July 11–13, the opera turns the philosopher's ideals of education and enlightenment into a musical narrative, bridging Korean modern history and operatic form. At CJ Towol Theater, audiences can enjoy Rossini's beloved comedy "The Barber of Seville," presented by Noble Art Opera Company June 20–21. Directed by Shin Sun-seop, the production delivers all the charm, wit,and rapid-fire arias that make the opera a perennial favorite. The Jayu Theater serves as the stage for two family-friendly productions. "Miles and the Three Musketeers," an original work by The Muse Opera Company directed by Lee Jung-eun, plays June 28–29. Through animal characters preparing for a music audition, the opera explores themes of friendship and aspiration in a format suited for all ages. Opera Factory reimagines the classic fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" as a children's opera, running July 5–6. Directed by Park Kyung-tae, the production uses a child's perspective to reframe familiar narratives and promote engagement with classical music among younger audiences. Launched in 2009, the Korea Opera Festival has grown into a key platform for private opera companies.

Interview: Korean adaptation of 'Carthage' draws steady support for universal themes
Intense whodunit asks how much society should intervene in people's lives For British playwright Chris Thompson, 'Carthage' holds a special place in his heart. It was his debut work, the first of his plays to be adapted into another language and an honest response to his 12 years of service as a social worker in London. Now, the third Korean-language production of "Carthage," staged by theater company Secret Base under the direction of Shin Ji-ho, is enjoying yet another sold-out run. "Carthage" is being staged at the Quad Theater in Seoul's Daehangno theater district through Sunday. In Korea for the first time to see a performance, Thompson described the experience of watching his own words unfold in another language as 'strange and surreal.' 'It hit me in a visceral way, rather than being about the language,' Thompson said in a postshow conversation with The Korea Herald last week. 'I wrote this play 10 years ago while I was still working as a social worker. So this play and the characters have lived in my heart for a very long time. I wanted to write something honest and responsible that reflected the world that I was working in.' 'Carthage' begins with the death of a teenager named Tommy, who was born in prison. The story jumps through time to unravel who is to blame: his mother, Annie? Marcus, the prison officer who was present at the time of his death? Or Sue, the social worker who cared for both Tommy and his mother? The open-stage design of the drama places the audience on all sides of the stage, evoking feelings of a jury in a courtroom, silently deliberating on guilt and responsibility. Despite the play's grounding in the UK's social care system, its popularity in Korea suggests the themes transcend borders. 'I think the structure of the story pulls people in because it's basically a whodunit,' Thompson said. 'We always want the easy answer, like in an Agatha Christie murder revelation, but it's not that simple.' And even though the play was written in a very UK-specific context, Thompson said he was trying to write something universal about guilt, blame and responsibility. 'I think people recognize the characters and the conflicts, the dynamics, the dilemmas that are going on.' The idea for the play came from a study Thompson read, which found that some juvenile offenders in prison would deliberately create situations in which they were restrained and held by prison officers because they were not receiving hugs, affection or natural intimacy from their families. Reflecting on his years in the field, Thompson admitted that the most honest response he could give about intervention by authorities was 'often more about wishing we had the courage to leave them alone and accept the risk.' "If I'm honest, would (children) have been better off if we had left them alone and not brought them into the system? Because the system that is designed to help can do more harm than good. The children in the UK, the ones that come out the other end, sometimes come out worse, even though we've tried to help them.' Emotional balance For director Shin, who brought the drama to Korea, it was the play's exploration of social structures, institutional systems and issues facing youth that drew him in. 'And what I focused on most was balancing the characters' positions — their professional standpoint and their personal, human one,' said Shin. 'If we approach them purely through their roles, they feel overly institutional. But if we lean too far into emotion, they become untethered from their professional identities, and we end up empathizing with them too much, losing a sense of critical distance. I was constantly trying to walk that middle line.' He also chose not to give the audience too many clues about Tommy's death. 'The entire play moves toward Tommy's death, but I wanted the audience to encounter fragments of events, just like we do in real life — when one incident occurs, we're often left to piece together meaning from scattered assumptions and speculation. I wanted to condense that chaos into something more focused.' He layered in tools like overlapping voice-overs and audio recalls that both expand the storytelling and subtly plant narrative hints. One of Shin's most intentional choices in this third run was to resist immersion. 'Most importantly, I didn't want the audience to get too emotionally absorbed. Just because something is portrayed realistically doesn't mean I want it invading people's own lives. I thought a lot about preventing that,' he explained. That is why the director added an unexpected video segment at the end, right after Tommy's death, that is seemingly irrelevant but very much on purpose. 'Well-made, polished theatrical worlds don't interest me much anymore. I wanted to twist it at the end and disrupt that illusion a little.' hwangdh@

Weverse Con Festival expands beyond Hybe, Weverse platform
In its third year, iconic concert expands its musical reach Weverse Con Festival, a concert organized by K-pop powerhouse Hybe's fan platform subsidiary Weverse, wrapped up this year's edition over the weekend at the Inspire Entertainment Resort in Incheon, with its musical diversity and festival structure greatly expanded. Now in its third year, the event, which originally featured only artists under Hybe or the Weverse platform, has broadened its musical palette to include non-Hybe, non-Weverse and even non-K-pop artists in its lineup. This year, rock band Nell, singer-songwriter Lee Mu-jin, musical actress Jeong Sun-ah and Min Kyoung-ah took the stage, offering festivalgoers a broader musical experience. In addition to the daytime performances at the outdoor Discovery Park stage and evening shows at the indoor Inspire Arena, this year saw a new outdoor night concert. Despite the blazing sun Sunday, large crowds gathered in front of the outdoor stage. "I was worried about the heat, but we are so thankful to see everyone smiling, enjoying the show and singing along,' said Siyeon, the vocalist of the band QWER. Musical actress Jeong Sun-ah energized the crowd with music from "Frozen," "The Greatest Showman" and "Wicked." She also delivered a cover of Day6's "Welcome to the Show.' Next up was Kyuhyun, a member of Super Junior and a ballad soloist, who closed out the daytime performances. Appearing on a stage filled with bubbles, he sang "Time with You,' waving endlessly to fans and filling the afternoon with his smooth, tender vocals. The night outdoor segment, Weverse Park Night, kicked off at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by singer-songwriter Lee Mu-jin followed by stages of BTOB's Lee Chang-sub and boy group &Team. Lee Mu-jin sang his latest single "Bird on the Edge' to a guitar accompaniment. Lee Chang-sub began with the rock ballad "Heavenly Fate,' then, taking off his jacket, switched mood with the refreshing band sound of "New Wave.' As night fully descended, &Team took the stage, blending Korean and Japanese versions of its songs to the enthusiastic cheers of its fans. Meanwhile, the indoor Weverse Con continued at Inspire Arena with high-energy performances from rising K-pop groups like Lun8, P1Harmony, UAU and TWS. The venue lit up with glamorous laser and firework effects. Each year, Weverse Con pays tribute to an artist who has left a significant mark on Korean pop music. This year's honoree was BoA, often called the "Star of Asia." Le Sserfim's Chaewon and Eunchae introduced the legendary soloist, saying, "The title of No. 1 created by a girl is not just a ranking. It was a declaration of a new era.' BoA heated up the stage with hits like "My Name," "Atlantis Princess" and "Only One." UAU and TWS joined the tribute by covering her songs "Better' and "Amazing Kiss,' respectively, creating a cross-generational collaboration. "I'm preparing a new album, aiming for an August release. I'm recording diligently and will return with good music,' BoA told the audience, promising another legendary comeback. Le Sserafim kicked off its set with "Chasing Lightning' and "Crazy." Although a back injury kept member Huh Yun-jin off the stage, the remaining four members delivered a seamless performance. "Summer is here. And when you think of summer, you think of Le Sserafim,' they teased, hinting at the group's upcoming Japanese album. The final act of the festival's final day was TXT, headlining Weverse Con Festival for the third consecutive year. They performed a 17-song set including the group's latest track "Love Language,' Yeonjun's solo "Ggum,' Beomgyu's solo "Panic' as well as Soobin and Yeonjun's unit song "The Killa" and the group's other unit track, "Quarter Life." Attendees were pleased with both the overall organization and the musical experience. "This is my second time at Weverse Con Festival. I came for TXT, but I'm really enjoying the other performances and activity booths too,' said Bella, a fan in her 20s wearing a TXT T-shirt. A Chinese K-pop fan holding a fan decorated with TWS members' photos praised the festival's convenience for international visitors. "Even though I don't speak Korean, I had no trouble getting merchandise, buying drinks or finding my way to the concert venues.'
