Pakistan eyes improved disaster response with new satellite
Pakistan is set to launch another remote‑sensing satellite from a Chinese launch centre next week, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced on Sunday. The satellite will enhance Earth observation capabilities to support national resource management and bolster disaster response systems.
The new satellite, set to launch from China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC) on July 31, is expected to serve a broad range of national priorities — from precision agriculture and urban planning to infrastructure monitoring, transport network mapping, and hazard risk assessment. It will also bolster disaster preparedness by providing real-time alerts for floods, earthquakes, landslides, glacier melt, and deforestation.
SUPARCO stated that integration of this satellite with PRSS‑1 (launched July 2018) and EO‑1 (January 2025) will reinforce Pakistan's space-based ecosystem under the National Space Policy and Vision 2047, aiming to position the country as a leader in regional space technology.

With versatile data-acquisition capacities under various environmental conditions, the satellite will be launched from China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC) under a bilateral space cooperation framework.
Pakistan's space programme has witnessed several milestones in the last two years. In January 2025, China placed Pakistan's EO‑1 satellite in orbit, designed to enhance resource monitoring and disaster prediction.
In May 2024, its first lunar satellite was deployed aboard China's Chang'e‑6 mission, and later plans include participation in China's Chang'e‑8 lunar exploration project.

Chinese team visits Cotton Research Institute
MULTAN: A delegation from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) visited the Cotton Research Institute (CRI) in Multan. The Chinese delegation included David, Dr Shang, and Chai. Representing Pakistan were Brigadier Sohail Ishrat (retd), Director of the Green Pakistan Initiative, along with five other members. During the visit, the delegation was given a comprehensive briefing on the ongoing research activities and key achievements of CRI Multan. Detailed discussions were held on the current condition of the cotton crop, including pressing challenges such as the control of cotton viruses and pests —particularly whitefly, jassid, and pink bollworm, according to a spokesperson for the Punjab Agriculture department. The delegation also toured the institute's laboratories and field plots, where various experimental cotton varieties are being cultivated, and they closely reviewed the ongoing research projects. The spokesperson stated that both parties agreed on launching a joint 3 to 5-year research programme. Under this initiative, a specialized group comprising Chinese and Pakistani experts will be formed. The primary goal of this group will be to trial Chinese cotton varieties at ten different sites across Punjab. These trials aim to assess the adaptability of the varieties to local climatic conditions and their resistance to viruses and pests. In addition, mutual collaboration was emphasized in areas such as the development of local cotton varieties, capacity building of human resources in the cotton sector, and fully operationalizing the cotton biotechnology lab. This visit marks the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan-China cooperation in agricultural research and development, with strong prospects for significant improvement in cotton productivity. Present on the occasion were Chief Scientist Dr Sajid-ur-Rehman (Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad), CEO PARB Dr Abid Mahmood, Cotton Commissioner Dr Khadim Hussain, Director Cotton Dr Ghulam Sarwar, and private sector experts including Dr Saghir Ahmad and Dr Iqbal Bandesha, among other stakeholders and agricultural scientists, who offered valuable suggestions regarding cotton cultivation and crop management.

The cabinet has unanimously approved the National AI Policy 2025. The plan aims to build a strong AI ecosystem that will democratise access to artificial intelligence, enhance public services, create jobs, and foster innovation. The policy targets training 1 million AI professionals by 2030, setting up AI Innovation and Venture Funds, and launching 50,000 AI-powered civic projects. It also aims to support 1,000 locally made AI products, 3,000 AI scholarships annually, and 1,000 research projects. It includes digital inclusion for women and differently-abled individuals, improved data security, and international AI regulatory alignment. While briefing the media, Khawaja said the policy will bring improvements in education, healthcare, industry, trade, and governance. "This policy is meant to benefit all citizens. It's part of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision for a 'Digital Pakistan' and follows his instructions to modernise the country's economy and governance using digital tools. With clear planning and strong implementation, we aim to join the ranks of leading tech-driven countries," she said. The government will launch innovation and venture funds to support startups and youth-led projects. The goal is to promote innovation, entrepreneurship and create specialised AI centres nationwide. The policy also focuses on education, not only for schools and universities but for training professionals and businesspeople as well. On cybersecurity, she said the policy includes steps to ensure AI use is ethical and secure. Measures will protect citizens' data and shield digital systems from cyber threats. AI will be deployed across all sectors to increase productivity and efficiency. "No one should be left behind as we move into an intelligent world," she added. The policy includes programmes to bring AI to remote and underdeveloped regions. Infrastructure development is a key focus. Pakistan has launched the Pak-China data transit system, positioning itself as a regional data hub connecting Central Asia and China through Karachi. Plans also include developing local AI tools, including a national Large Language Model (LLM). "We must create systems that reflect our culture, religion, language and identity," she said, warning against over-reliance on foreign models. She urged youth and professionals to actively help shape the country's AI future. Without local input, she said, Pakistan risks being left out of global tech progress.

Pakistan launches new satellite from China
China on Thursday successfully launched Pakistan's Remote Sensing Satellite-1 (PRSS-1) aboard a Kuaizhou-1A (KZ-1A) carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, located in Sichuan Province. The satellite was launched at 10:00am (Beijing Time) on Thursday. It entered its preset orbit successfully. The mission marked the 29th flight of the Kuaizhou-1A model, China Economic Net reported. PRSS-1, China's first optical remote sensing satellite sold to Pakistan, will be used for land and resources surveying and monitoring of natural disasters. The launch marks a major milestone in the country's space journey and strengthens its position in Earth observation capabilities. The project is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), and MICROSAT China, said a news release on Thursday. Prime Minister Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday congratulated SUPARCO and the entire team of scientists and engineers on the successful launch of Pakistan's advanced remote sensing satellite, terming it a landmark achievement for the country and a shining example of Pak-China cooperation in the space domain. In a message posted on his official X account, the Prime Minister wrote: "Heartfelt congratulations to SUPARCO & the entire team on the successful launch of Pakistan's advanced remote sensing satellite. This achievement showcases the soaring heights of Pakistan-China cooperation, extending beyond borders and into outer space, driven by a shared vision to harness space technology for the betterment of humanity." The prime minister noted that it would play a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities of CPEC and offer wide-ranging applications in agriculture, urban planning, disaster management, mapping of transportation networks, and data acquisition across diverse environments. "This is not just a technological advancement but a step forward in ensuring sustainable development and improved planning mechanisms across various sectors in Pakistan," he said. Foreign Office Pakistan said that the successful launch of its Remote Sensing Satellite has reaffirmed its position among the community of space-faring nations, leveraging innovation to pursue a more secure, sustainable, and prosperous future. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar commended the dedication of the engineers, scientists, and technical teams from SUPARCO Pakistan and CETC & MICROSAT China for their exemplary cooperation and unwavering commitment to the mission.
