Luzon Named One of the World's Top Trending Travel Spots

UAE Moments18-05-2025

Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, has landed a major spot on the global travel radar. The island ranked 13th among the world's top 25 trending destinations and 23rd in Asia's Best of the Best Destinations in the latest TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Awards 2024.
Known for its diverse landscapes and rich cultural mix, Luzon beat out hundreds of destinations worldwide to claim its place in this year's trending list. From coastal spots like Pagudpud to the historic streets of Vigan and the hustle of Manila nightlife, the island offers a variety of experiences that cater to every kind of traveler.
Tourism in Luzon saw over 28 million visitors in 2023
According to the Department of Tourism (DOT), Luzon welcomed 28.57 million tourists last year. Of that, around 4 million were foreign visitors, while 24.57 million were local travelers. An additional 25,000 were overseas Filipinos.
The National Capital Region (Metro Manila) was the top destination for foreign tourists, with 2.36 million international arrivals. This reflects a growing interest in the region's urban attractions, nightlife, and accessibility to other scenic locations across the island.
Why Luzon is trending worldwide
TripAdvisor highlighted Luzon's wide-ranging appeal—from natural wonders like volcanoes and rice terraces to colonial-era towns and modern cities. The platform praised the island for offering everything from nature hikes to food trips, saying travelers 'will be glad they stayed.'
Southeast Asia dominates TripAdvisor's travel lists
While London topped TripAdvisor's global list, Southeast Asia made a strong showing with six entries, including Bali, Hanoi, Bangkok, Hoi An, Siem Reap, and Phuket. In the Asia-only rankings, Osaka took the top spot, with Vietnam securing three places in the top 10.
Luzon's rise in the rankings shows the Philippines' growing presence in global tourism, and with international travel fully bouncing back, more eyes are likely to turn toward the country's unique destinations.

Lebanon looks to visitors from Gulf as it pushes to increase tourism

Lebanon is looking forward to a boost in tourism from Gulf countries as its new leadership works to rebuild ties after years of estrangement. The UAE and Kuwait have lifted bans on their citizens travelling to Lebanon after recent visits by President Joseph Aoun, who has also travelled to Saudi Arabia and Qatar after taking office in January. 'Lebanon is moving in the right direction, getting back to the Arab fold – and that's a Lebanese demand before anything else,' Fouad Dandan, Lebanon's ambassador to the UAE, told The National. Gulf tourists and investors − particularly from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE − were significant contributors to the economy for decades before relations soured over the increasing influence of Iran over the country through Hezbollah. However, the Lebanese armed group and political party has been considerably weakened after a year-long war with Israel that led to them signing a peace deal last November. Preparations for an increase in arrivals are already under way, with an additional terminal to be built at Beirut's international airport. Plans for a new airport are also in the works, with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announcing last month that the master plan would be unveiled shortly and the project thrown open to foreign investors. To be called the Rene Mouawad Airport, the new airport in Qlayaat 'could play a strategic role in facilitating cargo movement and affordable travel', Mr Salam told a conference in Beirut on Tuesday. At the same time, flag carrier Middle East Airlines is looking at setting up a low-cost carrier to serve destinations in the Middle East and Europe. The budget airline would be a wholly owned subsidiary of the wider MEA group but fully independent, Mohamad El Hout, chairman of MEA, told The National. He said MEA had seen 'significant growth in passenger traffic' this month, and was forecasting year-on-year growth of 10 per cent to 15 per cent in the second half of 2025. Given its history of conflict, Lebanon's security forces have also been rallied to encourage more foreign visitors. 'Preparations are under way to welcome tourists, though the state is working with a limited budget. Efforts have been made to improve visitors' experience. The road from the airport to Beirut has been repaired, and political banners and posters were removed months ago,' a senior security official involved in the operations told The National. 'What's new is the increased police presence near airport routes, especially at night. Police staffing has recently expanded to accommodate these new duties, and additional checkpoints are now active, with clear instructions to search suspicious vehicles and fine violators.' In the long run, drawing more visitors to its beaches, mountains and nightlife could play a key role in Lebanon's efforts to rebuild an economy hit by mismanagement, corruption and war, with the tourism sector estimated to account for 20 per cent of GDP. 'Eid Al Adha gives a glimpse of how this summer will look,' Jean Abboud, president of the Association of Travel and Tourist Agents in Lebanon, told The National. 'We're seeing new nationalities this year: Emiratis, Kuwaitis and Qataris. Gulf tourists tend to spend more time and money in the country. 'In May, airport traffic rose 11 per cent compared to the same period last year. The momentum is encouraging.'

Emirates serves Miami with daily flights with its Boeing 777, along with five-weekly services to Orlando, connecting travellers across its network of over 140 destinations. On the sidelines of the Arabian Travel Market, Emirates and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly promote tourism to the Caribbean nation in a partnership aimed at developing the country's tourism and trade industries.

Emirates Airline launches free shuttle service for economy flyers

Emirates Airline has rolled out a new perk for its Economy Class travellers flying via Clark International Airport (CRK) – a complimentary coach service linking Quezon City and Pampanga. Starting today, the service will run between Trinoma Mall's New Genesis P2P Bus Terminal (code: TRP) and Clark International Airport, offering a smooth and convenient transit solution. Designed to simplify journeys for passengers based in Metro Manila and surrounding areas, the shuttle service is available exclusively to Emirates Economy Class customers holding a valid ticket issued by Emirates (ticket numbers beginning with 176). A confirmed reservation for the coach must be secured at least 48 hours before travel. Walk-ins and those without an eligible ticket will not be permitted to board. This new initiative is part of the carrier's broader effort to enhance passenger comfort and accessibility, particularly for its growing customer base in the Philippines. By offering a free, reliable shuttle to and from Clark, Emirates aims to make air travel easier and more accessible for travelers across Metro Manila. To use the service, passengers booking via the airline website should select 'Trinoma (TRP)' as their city of departure or arrival. Travellers booking through Emirates offices or travel agencies are advised to ask agents to include the Trinoma bus segment before finalising their ticket.
