Thousands of cyclists take part in Highlands event for charity
THOUSANDS of cyclists have taken part in an event in the Highlands to raise money for charity.
On Sunday, around 5000 cyclists took part in Cancer Research UK's Etape Caledonia feat, which started in Pitlochry.
The event branched off into 40, 55, and 85-mile routes, meaning riders of varying degrees of experience could take part.
(Image: PA) Organised by Motiv Sports UK, the fundraiser attracted cyclists from all backgrounds and the closed-road event meant participants could cycle without fear of traffic or disruption.
Each route offered views of the Highlands' lochs, forests and hilly backdrop.

Gold medal Olympian Hailey Duff MBE (below) officially started the event at 6.30am, leading the throng of cyclists off on the course.

Dentist Alanna Cameron (below) from Inverness took the top time, setting a new course record for the 40-mile route of two hours, 19 minutes and 16 seconds, knocking a slim five seconds off the previous record set by Louisa Brown.
(Image: PA) Female riders led the pack this year on performance with a second impressive course record set for the 55-mile route by Sharon McNicol from Troon who came in at three hours, one minute and five seconds on the 55-mile route, smashing almost 26 minutes off the previous route record held by Kate Woodward.
Among the standout participants was Nathan Grove, a Scottish RAF engineer and bowel cancer survivor, riding the 55-mile route to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research UK and finishing in three hours, 47 minutes and 24 seconds.

Originally from Tain in the Scottish Highlands and now living in Letham, Angus, he has raised nearly £13,000 for the charity across several endurance events.
Nathan Grove (Image: PA) Event director Jo Dytch, who has been involved with the event since its launch in 2007, said: 'Cancer Research UK Etape Caledonia is more than a cycling event, it's a celebration of strength, solidarity and community. Stories like Nathan's remind us why this event matters.
'Taking part in a sportive of this scale, in stunning surroundings and peaceful closed roads is a tremendous experience, and all the more meaningful if cyclists have been riding to raise money to help transform lives through funding cancer research.
'Thank you to the community of Highland Perthshire who came out in their droves to support the cyclists and offer a warm Scottish welcome.
'Congratulations to everyone who took part today. We're already looking forward to our landmark 20th edition in 2026!'

Andy Robertson makes Man Utd dig as Liverpool left-back hails Napoli ‘king' Scott McTominay
Liverpool's Andy Robertson has said Scott McTominay has proved Manchester United was 'wrong' to sell the player last summer after an excellent first season at Napoli. The midfielder moved to the Serie A club in August 2024 and, in his first season, was voted the league's MVP in 2024/25 as Napoli secured the title. His 12 goals and six assists played a vital part in that, including an outrageous bicycle kick against Cagliari on the final weekend of the campaign that secured top spot. Advertisement Unsurprisingly, McTominay has become a fan favorite in Naples. His shirt from that win over Cagliari recently sold at auction for just over £20K ($27K). 'I think he went over there with a point to prove,' said the Scotland skipper ahead of Friday's friendly against Iceland. That's credit to him, credit to his attitude and his determination to be the best version of himself.' United was keen to force a transfer last summer, with McTominay's status as an academy graduate meaning he was particularly valuable on the club's PSR calculations, which would help provide funds for recruitment. That was despite McTominay scoring several important goals for the Red Devils in the previous season, including winners against Brentford, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Therefore, there was something of a redemption arc to the 28-year-old's successes in Italy this season Scott McTominay has become a hugely popular figure in Naples. 'Now he is a king over there,' said Robertson. 'At Man United he probably lacked getting that run of games consistently, he was in and out and things like that.' Advertisement 'He probably didn't get the respect he deserved. Then he goes over there, puts in a magnificent season and, fair play to him, to end it with the league title. 'Even before he was at Napoli, his standards for Scotland were unbelievable. He's getting better and better, he has taken it to a whole new level.' Robertson has earned 80 Scotland caps. -Credit:WOJTEK RADWANSKI/AFP via Getty Images At international level, McTominay has impressed for several years and has provided 11 goals from his last 23 caps. He is also among the plethora of players who have thrived since leaving United in recent years, along with Antony, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Anthony Elanga. As for Robertson, he is expected to start at left-back for Scotland on Friday, which would be his 81st senior cap. The Liverpool defender recently joked that he has Sir Kenny Dalglish's record of 102 Scotland appearances in his sights.

David Beckham ‘to receive long-awaited knighthood' in King's birthday honours next week
Football icon David Beckham will reportedly be awarded a knighthood next week. According to a report in The Sun, the former England captain's knighthood will be announced in the King's birthday honours list. The recognition comes over two decades after Beckham, 50, was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, which acknowledged his contributions to football and charity. Through his playing career, he amassed 115 caps for the England national team and achieved domestic and international success with clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain, and AC Milan. He captained the national team for more than five years and is particularly remembered for his 2001 free-kick against Greece that sent England to the 2002 World Cup. Beyond his sporting achievements, Beckham has been an active ambassador for Unicef and, more recently, the King's Foundation, focusing on education and environmental initiatives. He said at the time: 'I'm excited to be working with The King's Foundation and to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the charity's work. 'I've always been keen to help young people to expand their horizons and I'm particularly looking forward to supporting the foundation's education programmes and its efforts to ensure young people have greater access to nature. Having developed a love for the countryside I'm also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the foundation's work. 'It was inspiring to hear from the King about the work of His Majesty's foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips.' In May this year, King Charles III and Camilla attended the RHS Chelsea Flower Show alongside Beckham, who wore the King's Rose on his lapel, a striped variety named after the monarch. In January this year, Beckham was honoured with a Crystal Award at the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Switzerland, for his 'extraordinary leadership and humanitarianism' in protecting 'the rights of the most vulnerable children'. 'Today, there are more children in need and at risk than any time in recent history, and it is always the most vulnerable children who face the biggest challenges – especially girls,' he said on stage. 'Girls are held back by poverty, girls are held back by violence, girls are held back by discrimination.' 'I'm lucky enough to be a father of three boys and one beautiful girl. I want my daughter Harper to have the same opportunities as her brothers, and that should be the case for all girls everywhere.' In 2022, Beckham was part of a 13-hour queue with members of the public to pay his respects to Queen Elizabeth II as she lay in state at Westminster Hall. The forthcoming honour will also extend to Beckham's wife, Victoria, who will be known as 'Lady Beckham' after the formal announcement. The Independent has reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment.
