Calgary police investigating after 2 victims struck by 1,700 pounds of loaded pallets

CBCa day ago
After initially responding to a report of an industrial accident, Calgary police are now investigating an incident that occurred Sunday morning as a potential commercial break and enter. Loaded pallets — estimated to weigh more than 1,700 pounds — injured two people.
Police said they received a call at 7:45 a.m. about a potential industrial accident around the 5500 block of Fifth Street S.E.
Witnesses saw a bloodied adult woman crawling into traffic in the area, who indicated her friend was trapped inside the yard of local business, Merlin Plastics.
Upon arriving to the scene, the Calgary Fire Department and police said they found an injured man bleeding severely underneath a pile of overturned pallets that were loaded with crushed recycled materials.
Police said they estimated the pile to weigh more than 1,700 pounds, and it took all attending members to lift the material and extricate the man.
Both the man and woman were rushed to hospital in critical condition. As of noon on Sunday, the man was still in critical condition, while the woman had been upgraded to stable with severe injuries, police said.
The woman's injuries were likely a result of the falling materials striking her and knocking her to the ground, police added.
Neither the man nor woman are employed by Merlin Plastics, police said, and were not authorized to be in the area where they were found — so CPS is investigating case as a potential commercial break and enter.

Man charged after death threat against Jewish man in Montreal

A screenshot of a video posted on social media showing a man during an altercation in Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough. (Source: X/Mayer Feig) A man arrested for allegedly threatening a Jewish man in Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough last week was back in court Monday to face criminal charges. Montreal police were called to a residential street last Friday after getting 911 calls about a man making 'threats and hateful remarks' toward a group of people. A short video posted on social media shows part of the altercation. In the video, a man can be heard saying 'we will kill you' and 'you f-cking pig' when speaking to people, including at least one of them being a member of the Jewish community, before walking away. Court records show that Sid Ali Tamrabet, 28 of Montreal, is facing three criminal charges. He is accused of harassment of a woman and her family between Aug. 10 and Aug. 15, causing them 'to reasonably fear for her safety or the safety of anyone known to her.' The accused is also facing two counts of uttering death threats after he allegedly threatened a man between Aug. 10 and Aug. 15 and threatened two other men on Aug. 9. Tamrabet has no prior criminal record in Quebec. According to the Crown prosecution office, he will meet with a court-appointed criminologist mandated to assess people who are detained and suspected of having a mental health problem. The criminological assessment is a service provided by Urgence psychosociale-Justice, which is part of the Philippe-Pinel psychiatric hospital in Montreal. The incident was condemned by Jewish organizations, including the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), which said last week that it was pleased that police made a swift arrest. 'Those who seek to threaten members of our community must be held accountable. If you see something, say something,' the group said in the statement. The incident in Saint-Laurent also came days after a Jewish father was attacked in front of his children in the city's Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough. The accused in that case, 23-year-old Sergio Yanes Preciado of Montreal, was arrested and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine whether or not he understands the charges against him. He is facing one count of assault causing bodily harm. The victim was hospitalized for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

Community still searching for answers after fatal house explosion shakes quiet neighbourhood

Emergency crews tend to the scene of a reported house explosion in Barrie, Ont., on Sat., Aug. 9, 2025. Monday marks nearly two weeks since a fatal house explosion shook a neighbourhood in Barrie's south end; the community is still searching for answers. The explosion reduced the family residence to rubble and caused damage to surrounding homes and vehicles. The Office of the Fire Marshal, who is being assisted by detectives from the Barrie Police Criminal Investigation Division, confirmed to CTV News on Monday morning that an investigation of this nature is going to take time to determine. Jim Demetriou, with the Office of the Fire Marshal, says, 'At this stage, there are no new updates to share, as the matter remains under active investigation.' The deafening bang could be heard and felt by the community close to Thorncrest Road. Residents reported flames nearing 25 feet in the air at the time of the incident. 'It was quite a scene; there was a lot of debris everywhere... even across the street,' Barrie's deputy fire chief, Eric MacFadden, told CTV News last weekend. Police confirmed a 45-year-old man was found in 'what was left of the home' at 65 Marshall Street and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Last week, police confirmed the man had succumbed to his injuries. Exactly what caused the explosion remains a blur. CTV News will continue to provide the latest updates on the investigation as they become available.
