Egyptian striker Kouka defends appearing in anti-homophobia match after offensive messages - Talents Abroad

Al-Ahram Weekly19-05-2025

Le Havre Egyptian striker Ahmed "Kouka" Hassan defended his situation after participating in Saturday's 3-2 win over Strasburg in the final day of the league despite of receiving offensive messages urging him not to play before the game and even after it.
The final day of Ligue 1 witnessed the league's annual anti-homophobia campaign and despite his rejection for the issue, Kouka gave his club the priority amid its critical situation in the competition.
'I have received a lot of offensive messages to not play yesterday's game and even after the game,' Kouka said via X on Sunday night.
'But Yesterday's match was incredibly important for our club, our fans and I couldn't abandon my team mates in the most important game of the season, I gave everything on the pitch for the team, as I always do, but I also had to find a way to stay true to my personal and religious beliefs,' the Egyptian international added.
The 32-year-old Kouka, who joined Le Havre last January from Portuguese side Rio Ave, found his new team struggling at the bottom of the table upon his arrival, but things improved with time.
On Saturday, Kouka came off the bench in the 63rd minute to score for Le Havre, but VAR disallowed the goal, ending the game in a 2-3 win for his team, which avoided relegation and ensured a place in the top flight competition next season.
French giants PSG secured their fourth successive Ligue 1 title this season, ending the competition with 84 points from 34 games.
Egyptian striker Mostafa Mohamed, who plays for French side Nantes was in the same situation, but unlike Kouka and as usual for him, he refused to play on the same match day for the third successive season.
Mohamed was fined by his club for after his early announcement that he will not play Saturday's game against Montpellier.
Moreover, Aurore Bergé, the French Minister for Equality between Women and Men and the Fight against Discrimination, has called for sanctions against Mohamed.
From his side, Kouka said that he had his way of rejection regardless of abandoning the game.
'The league chose to impose a logo that represents a cause I respectfully do not support due to my faith. I made the decision to cover the logo, not out of disrespect toward anyone but to protect my conscience and remain true to my principles,' Kouka explained.
'I believe that support for any cause should come from the heart and be a matter of personal choice, not a forced obligation,' he added.
Kouka finally called for mutual respect regardless of differences of orientation.
'Respect must go both ways. just as we are asked to respect others, we ask for our beliefs and values to be respected too,' he said.
'I know some people will disagree with my decision, but I acted with sincerity, respect, and a clear conscience.
'Let's keep working to create a world where we can live together peacefully, even when we don't all agree,' the former Ahly player concluded.
Since his arrival last winter, Kouka has made 16 league appearances for the team, netting three goals, including two crucial ones, in two decisive games against Lens and Monaco.

Crystal Palace Threatened with Europa League Exclusion

Amir hagag The Athletic reported that English club Crystal Palace could be excluded from the Europa League, despite qualifying via the FA Cup, due to a suspected conflict of interest related to the club's ownership. Crystal Palace won the FA Cup after defeating Manchester City 1-0 in the final. The problem lies with American businessman John Textor, who owns 43% of Crystal Palace's shares. He also owns French club Olympique Lyonnais and Danish club Brøndby. Under UEFA regulations, two clubs under the same ownership are prohibited from participating in the same European competitions to avoid a conflict of interest. According to the report, UEFA has opened a formal investigation into the matter and is expected to announce its final decision within two weeks. If the violation is proven, Crystal Palace, not Lyon, will be excluded from the Europa League. The French club finished seventh in the domestic league, while Palace finished eleventh in the English Premier League, giving Lyon priority to participate. Olympique Lyonnais has qualified for the Europa League, while Brøndby will participate in the Europa Conference League, placing Crystal Palace in a difficult position. Crystal Palace claims that Textor only holds 25% of the voting rights, and that CEO Steve Parish is directly responsible for the club's management, which could weaken the argument for a conflict of interest. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Egypt President El-Sisi praises Pyramids for showcasing Egyptian sporting spirit

Published: Tuesday, 03 June 2025 Egypt President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has congratulated Pyramids FC after their historic victory in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, describing the achievement as a 'proud moment for Egyptian sport'. Pyramids FC defeated South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the second leg of the final on Sunday in Cairo, securing a 3-2 aggregate win and clinching their first-ever CAF Champions League title. Writing on his official Facebook page, President El-Sisi said: 'I extend my sincere congratulations to the Pyramids FC team and Egyptian sports fans on this historic achievement of winning the CAF Champions League for the first time in its history.' 'This victory embodies the spirit of determination and perseverance that has always characterized Egyptian sports,' he added. 'It confirms our clubs' ability to compete strongly on the continental and international levels. I wish Egyptian football continued success in all arenas.' With the victory, Pyramids FC became the fourth Egyptian team to win Africa's premier club competition, joining the ranks of Ismaily, Zamalek, and record champions Al Ahly. They also became only the fifth Egyptian club overall to win a continental title, alongside Arab Contractors SC. The win also boosts Egypt's dominance in the CAF Champions League, bringing the country's title tally to 19 — the highest in Africa. In a high-stakes final played at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium, Congolese forward Fiston Mayele opened the scoring before Ahmed Samy added a second for the home side. Despite a reply from Sundowns' Iqraam Rayners, Pyramids held on to secure the trophy in front of a passionate Cairo crowd. As a result of their triumph, Pyramids FC will face Morocco's Renaissance Berkane in the 2025 CAF Super Cup. They will also represent Africa in the inaugural 2025 Intercontinental Cup, where they are set to face either Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahly Jeddah or New Zealand's Auckland City. Additionally, the club has earned a place in the expanded 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, becoming the first African team to book its ticket and only the second Egyptian club to qualify, after Al Ahly. The president's message of support underscores the national pride in Pyramids' achievement, as the club's rise marks a new chapter in Egyptian football's growing stature on the global stage.
