New Zealand prime minister says Israel's Netanyahu has ‘lost the plot'
Luxon told reporters that the lack of humanitarian assistance, the forceful displacement of people and the annexation of Gaza were utterly appalling and that Netanyahu had gone way too far.
'I think he has lost the plot,' added Luxon, who heads the centre-right coalition government.
'What we are seeing overnight, the attack on Gaza City, is utterly, utterly unacceptable.'
Luxon said earlier this week New Zealand was considering whether to recognise a Palestinian state.
Close ally Australia on Monday joined Canada, the UK and France in announcing it would do so at a UN conference in September.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached 'unimaginable levels', Britain, Canada, Australia and several of their European allies said on Tuesday, calling on Israel to allow unrestricted aid into the war-torn Palestinian enclave.
Israel has denied responsibility for hunger spreading in Gaza, accusing Hamas militants of stealing aid shipments, which Hamas denies.
Ahead of Wednesday's parliamentary session, a small number of protesters gathered outside the country's parliament buildings, beating pots and pans.
Local media organisation Stuff reported protesters chanted 'MPs grow a spine, recognise Palestine.'
On Tuesday, Greens parliamentarian Chloe Swarbrick was removed from parliament's debating chamber after she refused to apologise for a comment insinuating government politicians were spineless for not supporting a bill to 'sanction Israel for its war crimes.'
Swarbrick was ordered to leave the debating chamber for a second day on Wednesday after she again refused to apologise. When she refused to leave, the government voted to suspend her.
'Sixty-eight members of this House were accused of being spineless,' House speaker Gerry Brownlee said.
'There has never been a time where personal insults like that delivered inside a speech were accepted by this House and I'm not going to start accepting it.' As Swarbrick left, she called out 'free Palestine.' Reuters

JERUSALEM: The UN human rights office said Friday that at least 1,760 Palestinians had been killed while seeking aid in Gaza since late May, a jump of several hundred since its last published figure at the beginning of August. In recent days, Gaza City residents have told AFP of more frequent air strikes targeting residential areas, while earlier this week Hamas denounced 'aggressive' Israeli ground incursions in the area. The Israeli government's plans to expand the war have sparked an international outcry as well as domestic opposition. UN-backed experts have warned of widespread famine unfolding in the territory, where Israel has drastically curtailed the amount of humanitarian aid it allows in. Hamas's October 2023 attack which triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Israel's offensive has killed at least 61,827 Palestinians, according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza which the United Nations considers reliable.

Pakistan, Micronesia establish diplomatic relations
Pakistan and the Federated States of Micronesia, an island nation located in the western Pacific Ocean, established diplomatic relations at a ceremony in New York on Thursday. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, and Federated States of Micronesia's counterpart, Ambassador Jeem S. Lippwe, signed a joint communiqué to formalize the relationship between the two countries. The signing ceremony, held at the Pakistan Mission to the UN, was attended by the diplomats of the two countries, including, the Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon. Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that he was truly glad as the diplomatic relations between the two countries were being established on Pakistan's Independence Day anniversary. The ties, he said, would open up avenues for cooperation in the field of human resource management, capacity building and climate change. He said that both Missions would work closely on key matters, especially promotion of international peace and security at the United Nations. Asim Iftikhar said he was happy to learn that Pakistan was the 100th country with which Micronesia was establishing its relations. In his remarks, Ambassador Lippwe expressed his pleasure at the start of a new chapter in bilateral relations. He said that he was privileged to be representing his country at the formal start of a journey of friendship and partnership with Pakistan. He thanked Pakistan for extending support to his country for opening of the United Nations offices there. He said that he looked forward to working closely with his Pakistani counterpart to strengthen the bond of friendship. The ambassador conveyed his congratulations on Pakistan's Independence Day. Before the ceremony, both the Ambassadors held a brief meeting during which they discussed possible areas of cooperation, both bilaterally as well as at the UN.

Pakistan rejects statements regarding creation of ‘Greater Israel'
Pakistan condemned on Friday recent statements made by Israeli government for a 'Greater Israel' and called on the international community to reject such 'provocative notions'. 'Pakistan strongly condemns and rejects recent statements made by the Israeli Occupying power, alluding to the creation of so-called Greater Israel, and its designs aimed at the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza,' the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement. Islamabad called on the international community to outrightly reject such provocative notions that constitute a 'flagrant violation of the international law', principles of the UN Charter, as well as the relevant United Nations resolutions. Israel steps up Gaza City bombing after Netanyahu vow to expand offensive 'Such statements reflect the occupying power's intention to entrench its illegal occupation, as well as its complete contempt for all international efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region. The international community must take immediate and tangible measures to prevent the occupying power from further destabilising the region, and to end its ongoing crimes and atrocities against the Palestinians.' Pakistan reaffirmed its full support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights, including the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent, viable, and contiguous State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. More than 61,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel's aggression since October 2023, according to Gaza health officials. Most of Gaza's population has been displaced multiple times and its residents are facing a humanitarian crisis, with swaths of the territory reduced to rubble.
