There was no way around it: Charlie Fisher was addicted to his smartphone. He scrolled on TikTok and Instagram first thing in the morning, picked it up to answer text messages between classes and relied on it as a crutch in social settings. It was a 'never ending pattern.'
'It just basically created this pattern where I was anxious, and so I'd open my smartphone, and then I would hate myself for opening my smartphone, which made me more anxious,' Fisher says.
If you told him a few years ago that he wouldn't be living with a smartphone, he would've been shocked, but the 20-year-old says his life is better because of it. He's part of a movement of college students who are trading in their smartphones for what's now considered trendy hardware: flip phones.
Growing up in a 'social wasteland'
Fisher grew up playing with basketballs and nerf guns around his cul-de-sac with a group of neighborhood kids. But when they all downloaded Snapchat, it changed the way they interacted — they no longer had to knock on each other's doors to ask to play and hangouts started to involve screens.
By the time he entered high school, everyone in his classroom had a phone.
He's not alone. Nearly half of teens say they're online constantly, according to 2024 data from the Pew Research Center. And 48% of teens aged 13 to 17 say social media has a negative effect on kids their age.
'It got to the point where I didn't even know what being present was,' Fisher says. 'Someone said flip phone. I was like, 'Wait, you can do that?'
He bought a $20 Nokia flip phone from Walmart with a $6 per month plan. For a year, he waffled between his smartphone and the flip phone until he pulled the trigger and fully ditched his smartphone in March.
Seán Killingsworth, 22, had long noticed that his peers' interactions were impacted by the smartphones in their pockets. He recalled a 'social wasteland' of 'zombies' who were unavailable for social connection.
He got a flip phone his sophomore year of high school. Whenever a new friend asked for his Snapchat, the conversation would quickly come to an awkward halt after he explained he had a flip phone. When he tried to call people — texting on his flip phone's keyboard was tedious — it was anxiety inducing or off-putting for his peers, who often stopped reaching out.
'I ran into a lot of barriers just trying to make a friend because of the mode of communication I'd chosen to use,' Killingsworth says.
When he enrolled in school at Rollins College, he wanted things to be different, and started hosting casual get togethers with friends without phones. Eventually, it turned into the first chapter of the Reconnect Movement, which has since spread to the University of Florida and University of Central Florida. Another chapter is on tap to launch at Simpson College in Iowa this fall.
The events involve activities like painting, playing outdoor sports or hosting lighthearted 'goofy debates' where students argue over topics like mountains vs. the beach. Many times, though, the event at hand morphs into an afternoon where everyone just hangs out.
'It's a way to see and be able to experience what is possible with just connecting with a group of people for no reason and just hanging out purely to hang out,' Killingsworth says. 'That doesn't really happen anymore, because everything's so facilitated and planned out by technology.'

How smartphones impact the young brain
Addiction spans devices and platforms and is most heavily tied to algorithms that feed curated content to users, according to Digital literacy expert Kaitlyn Regehr, who is the author of 'Smartphone Nation.'
A combination of factors — the refresh screen, the device's color saturation, notifications and prompt system — impact how the addiction functions.
Child psychiatrist and Yale School of Medicine Professor Yann Poncin says smartphones impact the brain in three key ways: impacting productivity and prioritization, depleting the brain's cognitive patience and threshold for tolerating frustration, and rewiring the brain's pleasure pathways and dopamine release.
'Your dopamine system, over time, over multiple events, is getting set in a way that to trigger dopamine release and a feel good release, you actually now need this phone, because nothing else in life is regularly going to give you that level of dopamine satisfaction,' Poncin says.
Poncin says teenage years are a core time when young people start developing their identity and determining who they are in relation to their larger peer group. The hormonal and biological changes young people experience make them more attuned to social comparison, something a social media presence can heighten as teens compare their followers and likes to those around them.
'The natural state of adolescence that is prone to feeling left out, prone to maybe feeling blue, sometimes prone to social anxiety; it is not caused by social media, but it is aggravated by social media,' Regehr says.
'I've been seeing things more like when I was a kid'
In the time since Fisher got a flip phone, he says he's returned to old hobbies. He's a musician, and has made more time to play harmonica, mandolin, banjo and guitar. He used to miss details on the screen when he watched movies, but when he watched the 2005 action film 'Sahara' this week on vacation, he could vividly remember the details afterwards.
'I've been seeing things more like when I was a kid,' Fisher says. 'You really see things for how they are in the physical world, and your emotions are really attached to that.'
For incoming Oberlin College junior Logan Lane, an unexpected benefit of ditching her phone was developing her fashion sense. The 20-year-old rose to prominence after a 2022 New York Times profile featured the Luddite Club she founded for high schoolers in Brooklyn.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, her outfits were heavily influenced by her TikTok for you page. But sitting in front of a trendy coffee shop in Brooklyn's Cobble Hill neighborhood, she donned an outfit reflective of her personal style: one of her mother's striped button downs, a bolo tie necklace and clogs with striped navy socks.
Through the Reconnect Movement, Killingsworth has watched his peers come out of their shells. The first meeting started off a little awkward — after all, the students weren't used to going without their phones. But 15 minutes into the event, he says even the most socially anxious participants were having energetic conversations
'You'd be surprised how many other people are feeling the exact same way you are about social media,' Killingsworth says.
The majority of the club's members don't have a flip phone, and Killingsworth acknowledges making the switch isn't for everyone.
Sammy Palazzolo, a content creator who uses a flip phone part time, says she can't imagine not having access to TikTok, where she regularly posts advice and story time videos to 490,000 followers. But on nights out, she carries her flip phone.
She and two friends purchased the phones during their freshman year after they realized all of the negative experiences they had while going out were tied to their cell phones, whether it was sending a text they regretted or neglecting to be present in the moment. Palazzolo recalled waking up with 'major anxiety' one morning after realizing she had accidentally posted a video on her Instagram story.
'These are supposed to be the best moments of our life, but you look around and people are scrolling,' Palazzolo says.
It didn't just make her more aware of her phone usage. Carrying the flip phone was trendy, and made for better photos on nights out.
'It really captured the vibe of the night better with it being blurry and kind of vintage feeling,' Palazzolo says.

How to digital detox
Fisher warns that going cold turkey can be a jolt to the system. Instead, he recommends those looking to make a change to start by detoxing their social media and slowly weaning off of their smartphones to adjust to not having services like Google Maps.
There are learning curves: texting on a T9 keyboard, navigating dating without access to apps and managing the demands of modern work without constant access to Microsoft Teams or Slack. Lane started drawing maps by hand to keep track of directions to parties. Fisher is a music engineer and missed having his music apps, so he burned his CD collection onto an iPod.
Ultimately, though, the young people who've ditched smartphones say it's harder for those around them to adjust.'It just requires more planning,' Lane says of coordinating her plans sans smartphone.
For those who aren't ready to make the jump, Regehr recommends keeping a 'phone-fed journal' with notes on when you opened your phone, what you did on your phone, how long you were on it and how you felt afterwards.
Turning a phone on grayscale mode, turning off notifications and setting app time limits can provide short term relief. She also suggests trying a digital spring clean or unfollowing spree.
This might mean making a separate work-related social account if you're seeing work content after hours or unfollowing that swimsuit brand that doesn't make you feel good. Regehr refers to this active decision making process as algorithm resistance — curating a digital diet where the user, not the algorithm, is at the helm.
'Decide what you want to see more of and what you want to see less of,' Reghr says. 'Actively search for things you want, that you want to be part of your digital diet, and quickly move past things you don't.'

This $30 Google TV box is the closest thing to a true Chromecast successor I've found so far

Onn 4K Plus The Onn 4K Plus is the closest thing to a Chromecast successor. It's very affordable at just $30, and delivers the Google TV experience with little fuss. The Onn 4K Pro adds a few more features for only $20 more, but if you want an even cheaper Google TV box with a little extra performance, the Onn 4K Plus is a great buy. When the Onn 4K Pro arrived in 2024, I felt it was a superior choice to the since-retired Chromecast with Google TV in many ways. And even with the arrival of the Google TV Streamer as a pseudo Chromecast replacement, Onn's most expensive model remains a strong budget streamer, boasting a few advantages even over Google's latest device at less than half the price. While the Pro likely won't see a direct successor for another year or so, that hasn't stopped Walmart's in-store tech brand from introducing new streaming hardware. Enter the Onn 4K Plus, an even cheaper alternative priced at just $30 that wants to take the place of the departed Chromecast as the cheap Android TV streamer of choice. I decided to give the new unit a test drive to see how the Onn 4K Plus compares to other budget streaming devices powered by Android and topped by Google TV, like the Chromecast with Google TV or the Onn 4K Pro. Should you trust a product from Onn? As I mentioned during my review of the Onn 4K Pro, store brands can have a mixed reputation. However, I've found Onn to be reasonably reliable for items like keyboards, cables, USB hubs, and similar accessories. I've used the Onn 4K Pro as my primary living room streaming device since my initial review and have enjoyed the experience overall, despite a few minor glitches related to the remote and other small annoyances. With budget brands like the Walmart-associated Onn, however, it's important to remember that its primary focus is mass production over rigorous quality control. Such brands also tend to use multiple factories or manufacturing partners, leading to variable long-term reliability. Personally, I've owned Onn products that lasted for years, but I've also encountered at least one USB hub that failed within a day, requiring a return. My advice is to know what you're getting into, and be aware of the return policy of the store you buy it from, just in case. What is the Onn 4K Plus, and how does it compare with the 4K Pro? Andrew Grush / Android Authority The Android 14-powered Onn 4K Plus is Walmart's latest streaming device, acting as a direct successor to the 2023 Onn 4K rather than competing directly with the still-available 4K Pro. The Pro featured premium capabilities like hands-free voice control, a remote finder, and a full USB 3.0 port for connecting external drives and wired controllers. All of these features are notably absent on the 4K Plus. Instead, the 4K Plus offers a much smaller form factor, making it easier to conceal behind your TV. The remote closely resembles the Pro's remote, aside from its white color and minor button layout adjustments, including a new 'Free TV' button placed just below the Home key. Andrew Grush / Android Authority Despite missing out on some of the Pro's special features, the Plus does have a significant advantage: a faster processor. The Pro used the older Amlogic S905X4, whereas the 4K Plus upgrades to the newer S905X5M. This updated processor outperforms the 4K Pro, Chromecast with Google TV, and even the Google TV Streamer in terms of benchmark performance. Although benchmarks don't always translate directly to real-world use, the new chip is clearly up for the job based on my experience. Of course, the Plus does sacrifice in terms of RAM and storage as you get just 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, versus 3GB of RAM and double the storage on the Pro. Thankfully, you won't notice these limitations during typical streaming sessions. I found the Onn 4K Plus handled the UI smoothly and quickly loaded apps, often feeling more responsive than the Pro in daily use. The Onn 4K Plus and Pro offer a fairly similar experience, though the smaller dongle has a slightly faster processor and ditches some of the Pro's higher-end features. While I never felt my Onn 4K Pro was slow, sometimes certain menu options would see minor pauses and stutters. At the time, this wasn't a big deal because I experienced worse lag with the Chromecast with Google TV. Now that I've used the Plus, I find myself noticing little performance hiccups on the Pro that weren't apparent when pitting it against the older Chromecast. Be aware that the differences are subtle, though, so don't expect a night-and-day difference here. Is the Onn 4K Plus worth picking up over the competition? 0 votes Yes, at $30 there's really no risk to giving this one a try. NaN % No, the Google TV Streamer is worth the added cost for its improved features and reliability. NaN % No, the Onn 4K Pro is a better deal for just $20 more! NaN % Not sure / other (Tell us more in comments) NaN % I would also argue that the Plus might end up holding up better as well, as most of the glitches around my Pro have been related to hands-free voice and the remote finder, both of which are absent on the Plus, regardless. Still, the Pro performs well, just maybe a hair slower than the Plus in some tasks. It might not be quite as fast in the processing department, but the Pro is still better suited for DIY tweaks, gaming, basic emulation, and other extended uses. I attempted to sideload a few games and utilities on the Plus, and while it was still possible by using a hub to extend its built-in USB-C port, the experience just wasn't the same. For one, the USB-C port is just 2.0, so that's already a limiter over the faster full-size port on the Pro. Games and other utilities also tend to be more RAM-heavy, which was another bottleneck I ran into when stress testing the Onn 4K Plus. How does the Onn 4K Plus compare to the Google TV Streamer and Chromecast? Ryan Haines / Android Authority Considering it's even cheaper than the Onn 4K Pro, it's shouldn't come as a surprise that the 4K Plus doesn't compete directly with Google's premium streamer in terms of features, even though its newer Amlogic processor can theoretically outperform Google's MediaTek MT8696 chipset. However, if you're simply looking for a straightforward streamer with Google TV without added frills, the daily experience on the 4K Plus is comparable to the more expensive Google device — minus the advanced smart hub, increased RAM, and expanded storage. Given that Google's latest streamer is twice the Chromecast's original price, the Onn 4K Plus nicely fills the vacuum left by the Chromecast's discontinuation. The Onn 4K Plus is the closest thing to a modern Chromecast you're likely going to find. The Plus mirrors the Chromecast's streamlined approach: no full USB port, remote finder, or hands-free control here. Its compact design and simple functionality align closely with the Chromecast, albeit packaged in a small box rather than a dongle. Performance-wise, the Plus clearly outpaces the aging Chromecast with Google TV, boasting a faster CPU, GPU, and double the storage. Both devices are limited to just 2GB of RAM, but I honestly never felt like the Onn 4K Plus was slow while streaming, and everything I did felt much smoother than it did on the aging Chromecast. Onn 4K Plus review verdict: Is Walmart's latest streamer worth it, or is there a better option? Andrew Grush / Android Authority With the Chromecast brand now retired and no direct, official successor on the horizon, the Onn 4K Plus fills a niche as an excellent replacement for the Chromecast with Google TV if you're primarily satisfied with basic streaming functionality in 4K quality. The Plus feels faster and smoother without dramatically altering the line's basic Google TV user experience. At $30, it's also very budget-friendly, saving you around $20 compared to the Onn 4K Pro or $70 over Google's Google TV Streamer. On the flipside, if you felt like the Chromecast with Google TV was missing functionality, the Onn 4K Pro ($49.88 at Walmart) adds hands-free voice, more storage, a full USB port, and several other upgrades that make it feel like more than just a 'faster Chromecast in a new form factor.' Personally, I'd go with the Pro simply because the price gap is very small here. The no-frills Onn 4K Plus fills the gap left by the Chromecast and all for only $30. The Onn 4K Plus has a faster GPU and CPU, which makes it a bit snappier in some use cases, but the 4K Plus' superior performance is also mostly limited to streaming apps anyway due to its less robust hardware and lower RAM total. Once a program starts, you won't be able to see any performance differences in your shows and videos, and if you really want a powerhouse streamer, you'll want to look at something like an NVIDIA Shield TV ($149 at Amazon) instead. Of course, if you still want Google TV and all the extra frills of the Google ecosystem, the Google TV Streamer ($99.99 at Best Buy) is still the best bet as its smart home hub functionality adds a ton of value. Prediction: Meta Platforms Will Be a $3 Trillion Company in 5 Years

Meta Platforms has several initiatives to grow its business. Meta is currently doing quite well, despite the various growth segments it's working on. 10 stocks we like better than Meta Platforms › Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is the parent company of the world's most widely used social media sites, like Facebook and Instagram. Its sprawling business has already allowed it to achieve a $1.67 trillion valuation, but I think there's much more in store. I could easily see it being worth $3 trillion in five years, which would provide market-beating returns for shareholders. Multiple factors influence this prediction, but Meta's various investments in artificial intelligence are the biggest. Few companies are diving into AI as deeply as Meta, which could pay off big time for them in the long term. CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg often highlights five key ways AI can help Meta Platforms. They are: Improved advertising. More engaging experiences. Business messaging. Meta AI. AI devices. They've invested significant money into building and developing their AI model, Llama. One recent report found that Meta aims to fully automate ad creation by using AI as early as 2026. Essentially, a client could give Meta some information about the company and a budget, then Meta would generate images, videos, and text automatically. Because Meta has internal information about what ads do and don't work and which client base to target, this could be a huge cost savings for its potential clients because they could pay Meta instead of a brand agency to do their advertising. As a result, Meta could likely charge a premium for this ad experience, boosting its revenue. Meta could also become more efficient by deploying engineering AI agents. Mark Zuckerberg believes its AI model will be capable of coding at a level comparable to a mid-level engineer this year, with the technology scaling to widespread use by next year. This would make existing engineers far more productive and could reduce expenses in other areas by deploying AI agents rather than humans. While this is a grim outlook for those in that line of work, the reality is that Meta Platforms spends a lot of money on software engineers, and this is a field that could be ripe for disruption if AI can effectively do the job. Another area I want to highlight is AI devices. While Meta has sunk a significant amount of resources into developing AR and VR headsets that don't have much practical application, its work with its glasses could be. The current use cases for Meta's glasses that it has collaborated with Ray-Ban to make are quite niche, but within the next five to 10 years, Zuckerberg believes that most of the content we're browsing on our phones will be done with AI glasses. If AI glasses become a hit, this isn't accounted for in Meta's valuation and would be a massive growth wing for the business. Meta is experiencing many exciting innovations right now, but none of them have impacted its financials yet. Still, Meta is doing just fine without any of its upcoming innovations. In Q1, Meta posted impressive revenue growth of 16%, while diluted earnings per share (EPS) increased 37%. Those are fantastic numbers, and Q2 should see similar results. Management expects $44 billion in revenue at the midpoint, indicating about 13% growth. Meta is clearly doing quite well, and if it keeps this growth up, it's well on its way to becoming a $3 trillion company, especially if it sees its revenue rise thanks to its ad innovation or AI glasses. Shifting toward profitability, if Meta can significantly reduce its operating expenses through the deployment of AI agents throughout its workforce, that could push Meta into profitability levels that investors have seldom seen. This is a big deal, as operating efficiency improvements have an outsized effect on bottom-line profits. With that in mind, I think Meta Platforms is an excellent buy right now, especially because its growth and dominance have prompted it to trade at a reasonable valuation. Meta's stock is priced at 26 times forward earnings, which isn't a bad price to pay, and with the growth of its current business combined with its various initiatives, it could easily become a $5 trillion company in five years or less.
