Chelsea's Club World Cup win ‘not an upset'

Rhyl Journal14-07-2025
The Blues defied the odds to overpower a Paris St Germain side who were overwhelming favourites in Sunday's final in New York.
Cole Palmer was the star of the show in front of a crowd of 81,118 at MetLife Stadium, scoring two fine goals and creating the other for Joao Pedro in a shock 3-0 win.

Defender Colwill said: 'Everyone was rooting for PSG or saying they were going to beat us but it's not an upset because we know how good we are. If other people don't believe that then hopefully we have changed their minds now.
'This performance was amazing and we should get the credit we deserve.
'It was a statement victory and in the future, if we keep winning trophies then everyone will give us the love that we deserve.'
PSG had stormed into the final by thrashing Real Madrid 4-0 four days previously.
Having already won four trophies in 2024-25, including the Champions League and a French league and cup double, their determination to complete a historic quintuple seemed clear.
Colwill is convinced the confidence Chelsea will gain from beating such an outstanding side will see them emerge as strong contenders next season.
The 22-year-old said: 'I said at the start of this tournament that our plan was to win it and people looked at me as if I was crazy!
'So I'm going to say the exact same thing now going into the Premier League and Champions League. I think we're ready and we'll see next season.'
The Club World Cup tournament, the first to be played in an expanded 32-team format, has had its detractors for a range of reasons but Colwill has no doubt the concept is here to stay.
'In the future, I think this will be the biggest trophy of all,' he said. 'It will be bigger than the Champions League and we were the first team to win it.
'I've really enjoyed it, playing games every four or five days, playing to sold-out stadiums, playing against different teams who you would never normally get a chance to play.
'I might be saying that just because we're winners now but I really have enjoyed it and it's been good.
'This is the biggest tournament I've ever won. Going into the game I was a bit nervous, thinking it was the biggest game I've ever played, but in years to come I will look back and think what a day it's been.'

Man Utd transfer news: Emi Martinez development as Ruben Amorim target takes action

Ruben Amorim's transfer plans are slowly coming together after finally sealing the £71m signing of Bryan Mbeumo, who joins as the club's second transfer of the summer after Matheus Cunha's arrival Manchester United have made their second signing of the summer after finally sealing a £71million move for Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo in another boost for Ruben Amorim 's hopes of a positive second season in charge. ‌ Amorim now has two new forwards to choose from after securing the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves earlier in the window and things are now looking up for the Red Devils. ‌ United are in the United States for the start of their pre-season tour and they have a chance to rebuild positively following their disastrous 2024-25 campaign that saw them finish 15th with 18 losses. ‌ There are still areas United want to strengthen - including a new goalkeeper and some new defenders - as Amorim looks to push the team closer towards the top of the Premier League table. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at the major Manchester United transfer news. Lammens instead of Martinez United have been alarmed by news that Andre Onana has suffered an injury set-back after tearing a hamstring and he looks likely to miss the start of the Premier League season. Back-up shot-stopper Altay Bayindir has been linked with an exit as he looks for more regular minutes, so Amorim will need a contingency plan in goal. Aston Villa's Emi Martinez has been line up as a possible option but United have already been rejected in a bid for the Argentine World Cup winner after proposing a loan deal. ‌ According to the Daily Mail, the offer from United was met with "incredulity" and was "rebuffed immediately", having only just signed a 12-month extension last year. United will have to look at alternate options and Royal Antwerp keeper Senne Lammens is emerging as a new candidate after his superb season in Belgian. Sammens has been linked with United in the past and Manchester Evening News have reported that he could be signed as a long-term replacement for Onana - though he would not be expected to start games regularly. ‌ It adds that he has limited senior experience at the top level but would still be a good prospect for the future, and one that would excite United fans who have grown concerned about Onana's inconsistency. Amorim target turns down Valencia deal A new midfielder is also on the agenda at United this summer after losing Christian Eriksen, while there are long term doubts about veteran Casemiro. United have reportedly targeted Javi Guerra, who has become a key member of the Valencia squad and started 31 of their 38 La Liga games last season. ‌ But the 21-year-old is said to have turned down the offer of a new deal with the Spanish club, according to Marca and has demanded "something better" amid interest from the Red Devils. It adds that United have been "keeping an eye on the player" and are "working behind the scenes" to bring him to Old Trafford. ‌ Valencia had promised to "create a sporting project around him" but that offer wasn't enough for Guerra, the report says. Guerra is currently valued at £17m, but Valencia won't entertain offers of below £23m because Villarreal are entitled to a 30 percent sell-on fee. It adds that United are willing to spend up to £21.6m on Guerra as Amorim looks to add more steel to his midfield. ‌ Mbeumo wants to emulate Ronaldo United's newest signing is hoping to follow in the footsteps of one of United's greatest players after putting pen to paper at Old Trafford - Cristiano Ronaldo. Mbeumo finally arrived through the door after talks with his old club Brentford dragged on for much of the summer and he has now spoke of how he idolised Ronaldo while he was growing up. Ronaldo scored a total of 145 goals for United across two spells but it was during his first stint at the club between 2003 and 2009 where he became a legend, helping the club win three Premier League titles and the Champions League. ‌ He also won the Ballon d'Or while at United and Mbeumo has now revealed he looked up to the Portuguese superstar when he was a child. "My first top was one with Ronaldo behind [on the back],' he said when asked to name his favourite player. "It changed the time. When I was really young, the two best footballers were Ronaldo and Messi. When I was growing up, Neymar. After that, it was Eden Hazard. "My dream was to become a football player and play for one of the biggest teams in the world. But when you're actually doing it, it's completely different." Marcus Rashford says Barcelona ‘feels like home' after completing loan move

Rashford has become the first of United's five wantaway players to find a way out of Old Trafford, landing the move he has desired since January when he instead joined Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season. Barca's agreement includes an option to make the deal permanent. That clause is reported to be 35million euros (£30.3million) and PA understands the deal sees Barcelona cover Rashford's wages for the campaign. 'I want to win the biggest trophies and feel like Barcelona is a huge club in the football world so it is the perfect place,' Rashford said in a press conference. 'You see with the team last season, they have a young ambitious team and I want to add my qualities, my personality, improve the team and help them win… '(It was) not difficult. I was clear on my preference from the beginning. Actually from maybe in January. It didn't work out in January so I went to Aston Villa and enjoyed a good period there. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to play there. 'The summer came around very quickly, it was time to make another decision. My choice was easy. It's a family club, something I'm used to from my past. 'It feels like home. I feel I made the right decision. I'm excited to get going and eager to play the first game in front of the fans.' The 27-year-old came through the ranks at United but has not added to his 426 first-team appearances for the club since being hauled off in a Europa League match away to Viktoria Plzen on December 12. Along with Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, Rashford had been training away from Ruben Amorim's first-team squad since pre-season began as they explored their options in the transfer market. Asked about United during his unveiling in Barcelona, Rashford said: 'The situation with United is the club is in a period of change and they have been for a while. I don't have anything bad to say about Manchester United as it has been an important part not only in my career but my life. 'I was grateful for the opportunity to play for them. But football is like life – not everything goes as simply as you thought and this is my next chapter. I'm fully focused on this and trying to improve myself and helping the team win trophies. 'I don't have anything bad to say about United. I wish them all the best and hope they are successful in the future.' 🗞️ Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan. Best of luck, Marcus 👊 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 23, 2025 Rashford departs 23rd in United's all-time appearance list and as their 15th-highest scorer with 138 goals, having notched a brace on his February 2016 debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League. He won five major trophies with his boyhood club and was crowned their player of the year in 2022-23 after scoring a career-high 30 goals, which saw him rewarded with a reported £325,000-a-week deal until 2028. The Premier League club said: 'Everyone at Manchester United wishes Marcus good luck for the season.' Rashford, who scored 17 goals in 62 England appearances, will hope the move boosts his chances of going to next summer's World Cup.

Chelsea striker Liam Delap's influencer girlfriend confirms split from the Blues' new £30m star after year-long relationship

Liam Delap's now-ex-girlfriend has confirmed that she has parted ways with the new Chelsea striker. Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town following an impressive campaign in Premier League last term with the newly-promoted Tractor Boys, signing for the Blues ahead of the Club World Cup. The English striker would go on to help power the Blues to a surprise crown, beating Paris Saint-Germain in the final, and will now battle it out with Joao Pedro and Nicolas Jackson for the starting role up top. However, while the 22-year-old was away, his former partner Leanna Paul, a 25-year-old model and social media influencer, is thought to have ended the relationship with Delap. Now, though, she has confirmed the split, responding to a Q&A on Instagram with the news. Asked whether she was single, Paul wrote: 'Don't usually like talking about my personal life on here, I like to keep that private. 'But since I keep getting asked... yes I am single.' The news comes after weeks of speculation over the couple's relationship status since his move to Chelsea. At the time of the Club World Cup, she had released a cryptic statement on Instagram, which went some way to shedding light on the situation. One post read: 'You can't keep someone loyal by loving them harder.' Delap, though, clearly wasn't letting his personal life impact his playing career, as he helped Chelsea pick up their second bit of silverware in just a few months. Delap scored his first Chelsea goal during their 3-0 win over Esperance Tunis earlier in the competition, and would play six times in the competition, also providing an assist. Paul had been dating Chelsea's new striker for over a year, only for the relationship to now come to an end. The club starts its Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on August 17th.
