BMW CEO hopeful for 'manageable' deal on US auto import tariffs

Time of India11-07-2025
BMW
's CEO said on Friday he was optimistic that the European Union and the United States would soon reach a "manageable" agreement on
auto import tariffs
, potentially including a mechanism to offset imports with exports.
Oliver Zipse's comments come as Europe awaits a letter from the U.S. administration under
Donald Trump
that could outline the framework of a trade deal and clarify tariff levels on European
automotive exports
. Trump said on Thursday the EU could receive a letter on tariff rates by Friday.
"I'm optimistic that there will be a manageable outcome but we have to wait for the result," Zipse told journalists at a company event in Munich on Friday.
He said a possible "netting mechanism" could be part of the deal, allowing exports from the U.S. to offset imports. BMW stands to benefit from such an arrangement, as its largest production site is in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The mechanism could be based on the value of exports out of the U.S. market - more than $10 billion in 2024 in BMW's case - rather than the number of exported vehicles, he said.
If both sides were to agree on such a mechanism, it could also benefit imports of auto parts, according to people familiar with the matter.
"We have an important point because we are the largest car exporter in the U.S." Zipse said, referring to the 225,000 cars it exported out of the country in 2024.
Hefty tariffs on car imports to the U.S. have left
European carmakers
scrambling to respond while hoping for a deal to minimise their impact in talks between Washington and the European Commission.
Sources told Reuters earlier this week that Brussels had proposed a package of measures to ease the pressure, including export and investment credits and mutual reductions in existing tariff rates.

Autodesk brings regional offering to India, enables local data storage

Autodesk on Thursday announced the expansion of its localised data offerings to include India, providing customers the ability to store and manage project data locally. India now joins the United States, European Union, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Canada in benefiting from Autodesk's global regional storage options. With India now available as a primary project data storage location, businesses and public sector organisations—especially in regulated sectors such as government, infrastructure, and utilities—can meet customer requirements and preferences while benefiting from enterprise-grade security, privacy, and recoverability. 'India is at a pivotal moment in its digital transformation journey, where the convergence of infrastructure growth and data-driven innovation is reshaping industries. The newly introduced India-based regional storage offering will empower businesses and public institutions to harness the full potential of cloud-powered design and construction, while delivering international standards of data integrity and performance,' said Kamolika Peres Gupta, Vice-President, India and SAARC, Autodesk. According to organisations surveyed for Autodesk's 2025 State of Design & Make report, digital transformation is delivering a 50 per cent return on investment in architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO) industries, particularly in productivity, innovation, and customer satisfaction. However, in India, 37 per cent of organisations cited a lack of trust in tools due to concerns over data security. The new India regional offering aims to address this by providing access to secure cloud collaboration tools backed by localised data storage. AECO customers can now select India as their primary data storage region when using Autodesk Docs, Autodesk BIM Collaborate, and Autodesk BIM Collaborate Pro. This capability supports Autodesk's commitment to offer more cloud collaboration choices and equips organisations to manage project data effectively within the country. 'India is a strategic growth market for Autodesk and we are launching focused initiatives to offer tailored design and make solutions suited to Indian realities. The expansion of the regional storage offering to India is another step that reiterates our commitment to India by supporting its vision for resilient, tech-enabled infrastructure while empowering customers to lead with confidence in a digital-first environment,' Peres added. Autodesk's regional offerings are supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS). In June 2025, Autodesk also launched localised building information modelling (BIM) solutions tailored to India's infrastructure needs, aimed at supporting smarter, more efficient and sustainable development.

Lyft misses quarterly revenue estimates on competition, weak US travel demand

Lyft missed second-quarter revenue estimates on Wednesday, pressured by mounting competition from Uber and softening U.S. travel demand, sending its shares down 7 per cent in after-hours trading. Larger rival Uber Technologies, which offers ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery business globally, beat revenue estimates and issued an upbeat forecast for the third-quarter earlier in the day. Demand for travel to the U.S. has fallen this year, and analysts expect the slump to continue through 2025 as economic uncertainty, trade tensions and visa backlogs make the country less appealing to international visitors. Lyft, which is expanding beyond its North America, posted revenue of $1.59 billion in the second quarter, missing estimates of $1.61 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Rides on its platform grew 14 per cent to a record high of 234.8 million, slightly below estimates of 235.9 million, according to 27 analysts polled by Visible Alpha. Lyft recently completed its nearly $200 million acquisition of European mobility platform FreeNow and has signed a deal with China's Baidu to introduce the search engine giant's robotaxis in the region. Meanwhile, Uber, which has 20 global partnerships for self-driving technology, said it was in talks with private equity firms and banks to finance the deployment of robotaxis. Lyft on Wednesday also announced a partnership, set to launch later this year, with United Airlines that will allow the carrier's customers to earn rewards on all Lyft rides. With partnerships including DoorDash and Chase already in place, Lyft's entry into Europe positions the company to extend such collaborations into international markets. Lyft said it expects gross bookings to be between $4.65 billion and $4.80 billion for the third quarter, well above estimates of $4.59 billion. The company also reported earnings of 10 cents per share for the June quarter, more than double analysts' expectations of 4 cents. With growth stagnating in major U.S. metros, ride-hailing companies are shifting their focus to medium and smaller car-dependent cities to tap into new markets and drive revenue. Lyft recorded an adjusted core earnings of $129.4 million in the second quarter, above the average estimate of $124.5 million. It forecast current-quarter core earnings of $125 million to $145 million, largely in line with Wall Street estimates.

World's Longest Suspension Bridge to Link Sicily to Mainland Italy

The proposed bridge spanning the Strait of Messina will measure 2 miles in length. To withstand the strait's strong winds and currents, engineers have designed the bridge with two 1,310-foot-tall steel towers, eliminating the need for a central tower in the sea. The project will cost an estimated €13.5 billion, equivalent to around $15.6 billion, and it will become operational in the early 2030s, Infrastructure Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said Wednesday. The Italian government said the bridge will be a security asset, which allows it to categorize the project as a military expense and count it toward its NATO spending commitments. This comes as Italy, along with other European nations, has pledged to increase its military spending to 5% of its GDP over the next decade. The bridge will include a rail connection that will allow Italy to mobilize its armed forces more quickly to the strategically important Mediterranean outpost. 'It is clear that it can have a dual use, also for security purposes,' Salvini said. Italy's Infrastructure Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini. Webuild, an Italian general contractor that previously worked on expanding the Panama Canal, is leading the consortium that will build the bridge. The company said the bridge will include six traffic lanes and two railway tracks, and will have a lifespan of 200 years. A bridge connecting the island to the mainland was first imagined in the 19th century as a way of fostering national unity and economic development. A report commissioned in the 1950s suggested either an underwater tunnel or a suspension bridge could be built. Silvio Berlusconi approved a plan to build a bridge when he was prime minister, but the project was canceled after he lost the 2001 general election. He tried to revive the project in 2011, but it was again axed because it was deemed financially unsustainable. Critics have long argued that the money would be better spent elsewhere and that it could cause environmental damage. Write to Margherita Stancati at
