Oscars flashback: Charlie Kaufman expresses ‘Eternal' gratitude
Although there are original screenwriters aplenty in Hollywood, it's hard to imagine anyone more truly sui generis than Charlie Kaufman. After all, he's the guy who managed to earn two nominations for the same film, when his fictitious twin brother, Donald, was nominated as co-writer on 'Adaptation,' a mind-bending 2002 film starring Nicolas Cage in dual roles.
So it seemed all but inevitable that one day Kaufman would take the stage at the Oscars — which is exactly what happened in 2005, when he scored his first (and so far only) golden statuette, this time in the original screenplay category.
Kaufman had solo WGA writing credit for the film based on a story by director Michel Gondry, Pierre Bismuth and himself. A romantic bit of magical realism, the movie imagined what it would be like if humans could wipe clean some of their memories, with Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey playing onetime lovers who underwent the procedure to forget one another — or maybe not.
All three men took to the stage to accept their Oscars from presenter Samuel L. Jackson, becoming the first team of writers to win in the category since 1999, when 'Shakespeare in Love' duo Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard were victorious. It was Kaufman's third (or fourth, depending on how you look at it) nomination; in addition to his 'Adaptation' twofer, he'd also been nominated for original screenplay on 1999's 'Being John Malkovich.' This was Gondry's and Bismuth's one and only nomination so far, but Kaufman would pick up an animated feature nomination for 'Anomalisa,' a 2015 film he wrote and co-directed.
Taking the stage, Kaufman said he found the 30-second speech countdown clock 'intimidating.' He then thanked the 'people who worked so creatively on this movie' and gave special shoutouts to Winslet (who was in the audience, cheering him on) and Carrey. 'And I'm supposed to wrap up now,' he noted; then someone in the audience shouted out at him. 'No, I don't want to take my time,' he answered back. 'I want to get off the stage. So, thank you. Hi to my daughter, Anna.'
Terry George and Keir Pearson were nominated for writing 'Hotel Rwanda.' George, who also directed the film, had previously been recognized for co-writing 'In the Name of the Father' with director Jim Sheridan and would go on to win an Oscar in 2012 for the live-action short film 'The Shore,' which he wrote and co-produced with his daughter, Oorlagh George. This was Pearson's first and only nomination.
John Logan, who was competing for his work on 'The Aviator,' would go on to receive recognition for writing 'Hugo,' another film directed by Martin Scorsese, and was first nominated for the screenplay to Ridley Scott's original 'Gladiator' film, shared that recognition with co-writers David Franzoni and William Nicholson.
Mike Leigh, recently BAFTA-nominated for his work on 'Hard Truths,' was nominated for 'Vera Drake,' both as director and for the screenplay. He has received seven Oscar nominations to date, first for writing and directing 1996's 'Secrets & Lies,' followed by screenplay recognition for 1999's 'Topsy-Turvy.' He would go on to be nominated for 2008's 'Happy-Go-Lucky' and 2010's 'Another Year,' both times for his screenplay. He has yet to walk away with a little gold man.
Finally, the category included one animated film: 'The Incredibles,' written by Brad Bird. He has five nominations, including two wins for animated film: He picked up his first Oscar earlier that night for 'The Incredibles,' and would get a second win in that category in 2008 for 'Ratatouille.' No animated film has ever won in the original screenplay category: All seven nominees from animated films in the category have been Pixar films, starting with the original 'Toy Story' film released in 1995 and ending (thus far) with 'Inside Out,' a 2015 film that spawned a sequel that has been nominated in this year's animated feature category.

Rihanna Reveals She's Pregnant With Baby No. 3 With A$AP Rocky as She Arrives at the 2025 Met Gala
Rihanna revealed she is pregnant with baby No. 3 while heading to the 2025 Met Gala in a form-fitting outfit. The 'Diamonds' singer, 37, showed off her growing baby bump in photos obtained by People before arriving at the star-studded event, which was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 5. She later walked the red carpet several hours after the event started in a black tailored look and a large hat with her baby bump on full display. Rihanna is now expecting her third child with boyfriend A$AP Rocky (real name: Rakim Mayers). The couple currently share two sons, 2-year-old RZA Athelaston Mayers, born in May 2022, and 1-year-old Riot Rose Mayers, born in August 2023. A$Ap walked the red carpet earlier on in the night solo. The dress code for the 2025 Met Gala is "Tailored for You," which is a "nod to the exhibition's focus on suiting and menswear — from specific silhouettes to various fabrics and accessories — that is purposefully designed to both provide guidance and invite creative interpretation." Cochairs for this year's highly anticipated event include A$AP Rocky, 36, Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton and hitmaker Pharrell Williams, plus Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Before stealing the show at this year's event with her big news, Rihanna previously spoke about how much she is enjoying motherhood. "It makes me feel really cool to be a boy mom," she told E! News at Fenty Beauty's Soft'Lit Naturally Luminous Longwear Foundation launch in April 2024. "Like I get to be as casual and busted as I want to, but it also forces me to embrace the epic things about being a woman, and a female and all my femininity. I embrace it so much more now, like I wear pink." She added, "I go between wearing jerseys and like, 'I'm wearing a dress today! I'm the only one in this house who can do that right now.'" The Barbadian bombshell said she's really embraced her role at home and it's empowered her in other ways. "It just kind of highlights about being a woman," she shared. "Because I'm the one that can experience all of that in the house — giving birth to them, carrying them, being a partner with Rocky and running the household and the family. It's new territory, but it's empowering." A source told In Touch that RiRi is continuing to expand her empire after launching Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty, a lingerie line, noting that she is well on her way to doubling her billion-dollar fortune. "Rihanna takes a very serious, thoughtful approach to each of her investments, she doesn't just slap her name on her brands, she's heavily involved in every step from the design to the marketing and the products," the insider dished. "There's a reason everything she touches seems to turn to gold. She does thorough research and due diligence and puts in the hours," spilled the source, revealing Rihanna is serious about investing her time and energy into her products. "She has an incredible sense of judgment, and her ventures, like her perfume line, are performing incredibly well. She's careful to time her launches right to ensure things are successful, she starts slow and steady before diving into a new project. Her existing brands are thriving, and she's now moving into new territories."

'RHOBH' alum Tom Girardi sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for embezzling tens of millions of dollars
Tom Girardi, the famed personal injury attorney who was depicted in the Oscar-winning movie Erin Brockovich and is also the estranged husband of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Jayne, has been sentenced to more than seven years behind bars for bilking his clients out of millions of dollars. The U.S. Attorney's Office of the Central District of California announced Tuesday that Girardi, who was disbarred in 2022, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for leading an embezzlement scheme that defrauded his clients of tens of millions of dollars, much of it meant for treatment for serious physical injuries. Girardi, 86, was also ordered to pay a $35,000 fine and more than $2 million in restitution, and to surrender to federal authorities by July 17. "This self-proclaimed 'champion of justice' was nothing more than a thief and a liar who conned his vulnerable clients out of the millions of dollars," U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in a statement. IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Tyler Hatcher added, "This sentencing brings a level of recompense for countless victims of Mr. Girardi's long-running scheme to enrich himself on the backs of clients who trusted him in some of their worst days." An attorney for Girardi didn't immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment. Girardi was indicted on charges of stealing more than $18 million from clients in 2023 and found guilty on four counts of wire fraud last August. The 13-day trial found that the disgraced attorney operated his firm, Girardi Keese, "like a Ponzi-scheme," federal prosecutors said, diverting millions won from settlements toward unrelated expenditures between 2010 and 2020. Families of victims of tragedies like a 2018 Lion Air plane crash, for example, were awarded millions in cases fought by Girardi and his co-conspirators, but said they never saw the Girardi Keese CFO Christopher Kazuo Kamon pleaded guilty two two counts of wire fraud in October, was sentenced to 121 months in custody, and was ordered to pay nearly $9 million in restitution. Another Girardi Keese lawyer and Girardi's son-in-law, David R. Lira, is expected to stand trial next month. Jayne filed for divorce from Girardi in 2020 and the couple remain legally separated, though their divorce has not been finalized. Jayne was not implicated in last year's verdict against her ex, but federal prosecutors said during Girardi's trial that among the misappropriated funds, $25 million went to EJ Global, a company founded by Jayne to finance her entertainment career. Girardi and Jayne were jointly hit by a lawsuit alleging embezzlement in 2020, but she was dismissed from the case in 2022. Though the law firm which brought the suit, Edelson PC, claimed at the time of Jayne's dismissal that it planned to refile, a new suit has yet to materialize. ‘To the North's' Mihai Mincan Talks ECAM Forum Bound Coming-of-Age Mystery ‘Milk Teeth,' Sound Designed by Oscar-Winner Nicolas Becker (EXCLUSIVE)
One of the hottest works in progress at ECAM Forum's second co-production market, unspooling June 10-13 in Madrid, the Romanian coming-of-age mystery/fantasy drama 'Milk Teeth' reunites filmmaker Mihai Mincan with much the same team of his calling card debut 'To the North' which bowed at Venice Orizzonti 2022: Oscar-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker ('Sound of Metal'), cinematographer George Chiper-Lillemark ('Immaculate'), and editor Dragos Apetri ('Animal'). Also on board are four of 'To the North' production partners: Romania's deFilm, France's Remora Films, Greece's StudioBauhaus, Bulgaria Screening Emotions, joined by Denmark's Oscar-nominated producer Monica Hellström ('Flee') of Ström Films. More from Variety Madrid's ECAM Forum Ups International Scope With 23 Feature Projects for Second Edition Bertrand Bonello to Be Honored at Madrid's Second ECAM Forum Co-Pro Showcase (EXCLUSIVE) Spain's ECAM Forum and Conecta Fiction & Entertainment Unite for International Collaboration The story, penned by Mincan, is again inspired by true events that serve as starting point for the helmer to grapple with painful memories of Romania's post-communist era, when dreams of a better life after the Romanian Revolution of December 1989 turned into disillusion. Here, the events are set in the final days of Ceausescu's Romania. The central character Maria, 10, becomes the last witness to her sister's mysterious disappearance and must find the courage to grow up in a collapsing world. The idea for the pic first emerged about seven years ago when he read about the tragic case of the kidnapping in 1989 of a little girl in Romania, Mincan said. What intrigued him were a few lines about the sister of the missing girl from the police, describing her as 'the mute'. 'That triggered something in me,' said the director who gradually incorporated into the script elements of his own experience of growing up in a society where people felt metaphorically speaking 'mute' or without a voice of their own. 'We basically did what we were told as we felt there was no foreseeable future for our country and for us Romanians,' said the director who was Maria's age in 1989' ''Milk Teeth' is a powerful allegory of Romania's transition between the communist era and the promise of a new society after the fall of communism in 1989,' added deFilm's Iona Lascār who produces alongside Radu Stancu. 'By representing darkness and void as visual symbolic elements, the film portrays the uncertainty and fear experienced during this period.' Visually, Mincan said the pic will borrow from two different traditions of coming-of-age dramas: on one hand, the social realistic tradition of Ken Loach ('Kes'), Lynne Ramsay ('Ratcatcher') or Sean Baker ('The Florida Project') and on the other the blurring of reality and fantasy in Carlos Saura's 'Cria Cuervos.'Anti-nostalgia 'When I saw 'Cria Cuervos,' I became obsessed with it and Saura's vision of childhood,' the helmer confessed. 'For me, childhood is a period of great confusion, where you don't have a will of your own. That's why I wanted to make an anti-nostalgia film, in which a little girl struggles to make sense of the world around her after her sister goes missing. The story therefore turns less and less linear and progresses into a vague dimension.' To convey the sense of confusion felt by Maria, Mincan said the camera work from George Chiper-Lillemark is mostly raw hand-held, while the sound – currently being designed by expert Nicolas Becker – will 'create a balance between the world outside the character, where you can hear things in the distance, and a sensation of pure silence and empty spaces.' 'Romania in 1989 was that way – very very quiet. There were few cars, a 10 p.m. curfew which meant people would spend a lot of time in their flats, with electricity cuts, TV programs perhaps only two hours a day,' recalled the director. In the starring roles as Maria is the young newcomer Emma Mogos, cast opposite professional actors Marina Palii ('Manor House') and Igor Babiac who play Maria's mother and father. 'I was looking for actors who would remind me of my own parents at the time, face-wise,' said €2.3 million ($2.6 million) project, recipient of the 2023 Torino Film Lab Production Award, was backed by the five co-production countries' national film centres, in association with Arte Kino, ERT in Greece, TVR, Avanpost Media and Radio Romania. Lascār said she is thrilled to be part of ECAM Forum's 'Last Push' section with 'Milk Teeth.' 'I've worked in film for 15 years, but this is my first time presenting a work in progress project in Spain. I'm looking forward to chatting with local producers and cooking up some great collaborations.' Most recently attached as minority co-producers on the Cannes Un Certain Regard entry 'I Only Rest in the Storm' by Portuguese helmer Pedro Pinho, deFilm's Lascār and Stancu are currently negotiating sales and distribution on the feature due to premiere later this year. A total of eight Spanish and international films in post-production will be pitched at ECAM Forum, next to 15 films in development, 11 shorts and 13 series in development.
