Joseph Fiennes held newlywed as she died after 'horrific' accident

Joseph Fiennes has detailed a shocking accident that saw him comfort a woman as she lay dying. The English actor, 55, is best known for playing William Shakespeare in the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love, Monsignor Timothy Howard in American Horror Story, and Commander Fred Waterford in The Handmaid's Tale. However, this week he recalled witnessing a distressing incident while on holiday in Costa Rica. Joseph was a guest on the Travel Secrets podcast, in which he spoke about his passion for horse riding, but how a ride during a past holiday took a tragic turn. 'I was staying at this wonderful hacienda at the foot of an old volcano,' he told host Tanya Rose. 'I love horse riding, and I got on to a horse early in the morning to go with a fellow traveller who was staying at the hacienda. 'She had just gotten married, and I remember getting up on the horse. It was getting quite hot, going into the shade, looking back, seeing this lovely woman kiss her husband goodbye, and then the horse reared up, and she sadly pulled on the reins and the weight of the horse came over and the whole horse landed on her and she fell back and really broke her head on the gravel and died.' The actor shared the story after being asked about one of his 'most unexpected' travel experiences. He went on to share it was 'the most unexpected, horrific accident, and in a moment of absolute beauty and joy and the sun and Costa Rica and horses'. 'In an instant you're reminded that anything can happen. I held her for a while; her poor husband was in such shock that he couldn't comprehend or communicate. And she slipped away. And I couldn't sleep for, God, I think a month.' Although Joseph did get back on a horse again during that holiday, he said he 'galloped and went hell for leather to get it out of my system'. 'But when I got back my dad did say, 'You can never be entirely sure how horses are trained'. Maybe it saw a snake, I don't know. Maybe it got scared of something. But it could be the way certain horses are trained, it can get beaten into submission a bit, they can be very temperamental so you have to be super careful.' Earlier this week, The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner tragically died while on a family holiday to the country in Central America. The 54-year-old actor began his career playing Theo Huxtable, the son of Bill Cosby's character Heathcliff Huxtable, on the sitcom from 1984 until 1992. On Sunday he was swimming with his family at a beach in Limon when he got into trouble while swimming and drowned. More Trending In a statement obtained by People, the Judicial Investigation Agency said: 'The victim appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current. The man was rescued by bystanders and taken to shore, where he received treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross. However, he was declared lifeless at the scene.' According to the outlet, his autopsy has now been completed, and the actor died from 'accidental asphyxiation by submersion'. He is survived by a wife and daughter, who he had chosen to keep out of the public eye. Got a story? Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt's relationship was the talk of the town back in the '90s. While the duo split up after just four years of being together, the actress swallowed the breakup pill with great difficulty. In Gwyneth: The Biography, the author, Amy Odell, wrote about the Ironman star's frustration as she got to know about Pitt marrying the Friends star, Jennifer Aniston. The actress allegedly admitted to her friend that she was upset that Pitt had tied the knot with Aniston and also went on to call him a 'sack of s***.' Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt's relationship timeline The author, Amy Odell, mentioned in the actress' biography that Paltrow and Pitt first met each other in 1993, on the sets of Se7en. According to the reports, Pitt suggested to the makers that Gwyneth would look great with him onscreen. As the duo started interacting more, they fell in love and went on to become the 'IT' couple of Hollywood. The pair dated for a while and got engaged in 1996. While things were looking good on the surface, the actress had her doubts about the relationship early on. In the year of her engagement with the Fight Club star, she 'expressed doubts to a crew member (while making the 1996 film Emma) that Pitt was right for her and admitted she had a crush on Hugh Grant." Opening up about the differences between the Shakespeare in Love actress and Pitt, Odell wrote, "He was brought up very religious, in Missouri. It's just a very different world from hers, growing up in Manhattan, going to Spence. I think she thought he wasn't sophisticated enough for her.' She further added, "She thought she was smarter, better educated, and more sophisticated." The duo parted ways in 1997. Brad Pitt's marriage to Jennifer Aniston affected Gwyneth Paltrow Pitt soon began to date Jennifer Aniston. The couple got engaged in 1999 and married a year later. While the fans of the actress and the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star were happy about them being together, it wasn't the case with Paltrow. When in a September 2000 interview, the Marvel star was asked about her feelings over Wolfs star and Aniston's wedding, the actress said, "I can't comment on this kind of thing.' However, an excerpt from the book reads, 'In reality, Gwyneth confided to friends that she'd felt sad when she learned they were getting married. (She was also fond of telling them that Brad 'has terrible taste in women')." During one of the business meetings with Estee Lauder, the actress went on to describe her ex-partner as 'dumber than a sack of s--t.' Meanwhile, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston filed for divorce after five years.

Oscar-winning period romance with unrecognisable A-lister streaming for free

A must-watch romantic comedy has just landed on BBC iPlayer. An Academy Award-winning period drama starring an unrecognisable A-lister is now streaming for free. ‌ BBC iPlayer has just added Shakespeare in Love to its library, ready for theatre and romcom lovers to devour. ‌ Released in 1998, the star-studded film features Oscar winners Gwyneth Paltrow, Colin Firth and Ben Affleck. It also stars Dame Judi Dench in a role that almost completely disguises the acclaimed actress. ‌ For those who missed the hit romantic drama, it follows young playwright William Shakespeare (played by Joseph Fiennes) as he is battling writer's block. While looking for a new muse, William meets his ideal woman, Viola (Paltrow), and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet. ‌ Dame Dench plays Queen Elizabeth I, donning the hair, makeup and 16th century garments to fit the royal part. Despite being on screen for around eight minutes, Dench's performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The drama's accolades didn't stop there, as Shakespeare in Love also took home the Best Picture prize, alongside the Best Costume; Best Original Music; Best Screenplay, and Best Art Direction awards. Paltrow also bagged the Best Leading Actress gong, which remains her only Oscar win to date. Directed by John Madden, the period drama has an impressive 92% Rotten Tomatoes score. The critics' consensus reads: "Endlessly witty, visually rapturous, and sweetly romantic, Shakespeare in Love is a delightful romantic comedy that succeeds on nearly every level." ‌ Casual moviegoers similarly rave about the nineties hit, with one viewer writing: "Incredibly heart-warming and wildly entertaining, this movie has something for everybody, and it is so much fun to watch. I definitely recommend it for romance and comedy fans!" A second said: "I absolutely love this movie, it's a timeless classic and an absolute must see. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll fall in love with the characters. "It's quoted almost daily in my household, and rightfully so! If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend this movie!" Meanwhile, a third penned: "Simply put, this is a fun film that never lacks for comedy. Everyone in this film portrays their parts with elegance. And as if to top the entire film off, Dame Judi Dench plays a rather fantastically entertaining Queen Elizabeth I."

When Gwyneth Paltrow was heartbroken about Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's marriage; She said the actor has 'terrible taste in women'

Brad Pitt has broken quite a few hearts in Hollywood, and Gwyneth Paltrow is one of them. While they were the 'IT couple' of the 1990s, she had a massive heartbreak when he tied the knot with Jennifer Aniston . Gwyneth Paltrow was 'sad' about Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's marriage In Paltrow's biography book by Amy Odell, the author chronicled the actress' feelings, according to US Weekly. During a 2000 interview at the Toronto Film Festival, a certain 'gossip reporter' asked the 'Shakespeare in Love' actress about how she felt about Brad Pitt marrying Jennifer Aniston (in July of that year). As Paltrow's eyes turned daggers, she responded, 'Are you really asking me this question?' 'I can't comment on this kind of thing,' the statement in the book said. However, the behind-the-scenes felt something different, as in reality, Gwyneth's heart was in pieces. Odell wrote, 'In reality, Gwyneth confided to friends that she'd felt sad when she learned they were getting married. (She was also fond of telling them that Brad 'has terrible taste in women'.)' Moreover, the 'Iron Man' actress said quite bitter words about Pitt at an elite cosmetics business meeting later that year. 'At one dinner, the two [Gwyneth and Aerin Lauder] were talking about Brad Pitt. According to someone familiar with the discussion, Gwyneth allegedly told her, 'He's dumber than a sack of s–t,' the excerpt reads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ready for a Glow-Up? Ben Affleck And Gwyneth Paltrow Relationship Details In New Book

This post contains brief discussions of alcohol addiction. Thinking about it today, Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow might seem like an oddly matched couple, but in the '90s, they were pretty loved up. In late 1997, a few months after her split from Brad Pitt, Gwyneth met a guy named Ben at a Miramax party. Ben was on the rise at the time, preparing to release Good Will Hunting, and he and Gwyneth hit it off. The pair dated on and off for three years before splitting in 2000. If there's one thing we know about Gwyneth, it's that she's pretty good at maintaining good relationships with her exes, which seems to be the case with her and Ben. In 2015, she told Howard Stern that he's 'super intelligent and really, really talented,' but that their relationship didn't work out because 'he wasn't in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend.' Now, thanks to some newly released excerpts from a forthcoming biography all about Gwyneth's life and career, we have some new insight into the struggles that these two faced during their romance. In the new book, Gwyneth: The Biography, author Amy Odell writes that though Gwyneth and Ben were a good intellectual match, the Gone Girl star had 'demons.' 'Affleck was struggling with alcoholism and a gambling habit around the time he met Gwyneth,' she alleges. 'Her friends had reservations about him because he didn't always reciprocate her affection. He at times seemed more interested in playing video games with the guys at his house than being with Gwyneth.' Despite this, Gwyneth and Ben apparently had great sexual chemistry, and she 'spoke openly about how much she enjoyed their sex life.' 'She told [her friend makeup artist Kevyn] Aucoin one day that she loved when Affleck [engaged in a certain sex act],' Odell writes in the book. This kinda tracks, given that Gwyneth said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2023 that Ben was 'technically excellent' in bed… However, no amount of physical chemistry could outweigh 'his self-destructive impulses,' the book suggests, 'which may have even included cheating on her.' They split in 1998, shortly after the opening of their movie, Shakespeare in Love, which won Gwyneth an Oscar for Best Actress in 1999. Ben and Gwyneth did get back together for a while, although the relationship was apparently strained in October 2000 when 'Affleck's addiction issues resurfaced,' causing them to split for good. 'While he had been turning to alcohol, she was practicing Ashtanga yoga six times a week, meditating daily, and watching her diet,' Odell writes. Ben has talked openly about his past struggles with alcohol misuse, and first went to rehab for alcoholism in 2001. He sought treatment for alcohol addiction on subsequent occasions in 2017 and 2018, and is now happily sober. As for his love life, Ben was engaged to Jennifer Lopez from 2002 to 2004, and after their split, he married Jennifer Garner in 2005. He and Jen Garner welcomed three children during their marriage, before separating in 2015. In 2021, he got back together with and they tied the knot in 2022. However, they ultimately got divorced after just over two years of marriage in 2024. Meanwhile, Gwyneth met Chris Martin in 2002, and the pair were married by the following year. Chris and Gwyneth welcomed two children together, Apple and Moses, before announcing their split (or 'conscious uncoupling') in March 2014. Today, she is married to Brad Falchuk, whom she began dating in 2014. Gwyneth: The Biography by Amy Odell hits shelves on July 29 and is available for pre-order here.
