Diamantakos's brace helps East Bengal beat Bagan, end two years of hurt

Kolkata: It was the silence that amplified what followed. Half of Salt Lake stadium emptied in Usain Bolt speed, the other half roared into Sunday night with pent up emotions of over two years. East Bengal fans have found their voice, the 2-1 win against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the quarter-final of the 134th Durand Cup feeling like they had won Asia's oldest tournament. There will be sterner tests in the season, assuming there is a season, Diamond Harbour FC await in the semi-final, but those are thoughts reserved for another day. For now, it was all about joy and jubilation and it was provided by a man who didn't start.
There were great expectations on Dimitrios Dimantakos but all he could produce was four goals and one assist in 19 Indian Super League matches last term. Replacing the injured Hamid Ahadad in the 18th minute, the Greek striker compensated with goals in the 38th and 52nd minutes, the first from a penalty.
Anirudh Thapa pulled one back in the 68th with a grounder but for most of the night, Mohun Bagan had no answer to East Bengal's physicality and overall superiority. The last bit was encapsulated in the second goal which took a deflection off Alberto Rodriguez after Edmund Lalrindika and Mahesh Naorem combined to free the Greek.
Lalrindika tested Vishal Kaith, whose distribution was poor, early as did Naorem. The pressure told on Ashish Rai whose foul on Bipin Singh fetched the penalty. Mohun Bagan grew into the game after Thapa's goal but compact without the ball, East Bengal absorbed the pressure though it needed a goalline save from new central defender Kevin Sibille, who paired with Anwar Ali like they were old mates.
It was in the Durand Cup on August 12, 2023, five derbies earlier, that East Bengal had last beaten their arch-rivals in Kolkata. Since the last defeat here, against NorthEast United in the Durand Cup final on August 31, 2024, Mohun Bagan finished an ISL season without losing at home.
It needed East Bengal to show they are invincible no more.

In a controversial moment that echoed former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell's 2005 Eden Gardens scandal, Cummings showed the middle finger after the Kolkata Derby at Yuva Bharati Krirangan on Sunday. Mohun Bagan's Jason Cummings made an obscene gesture at East Bengal fans The incident occurred after Mohun Bagan players had boarded the team bus following their defeat to city rivals East Bengal, which ended their hopes of securing a record-extending 18th Durand Cup crown. As rival fans chanted "Jai East Bengal," Cummings flashed the obscene gesture, sparking widespread outrage on social media. Jason Cummings's gesture sparked widespread outrage on social media. In 2005, then-India head coach Chappell had made a similar rude gesture at the crowd outside Eden Gardens before the fourth one-day international against South Africa. Television footage showed the Australian putting his right hand out of the team bus window and flashing the middle finger towards fans, who were reportedly taunting him for excluding local hero Sourav Ganguly from the side. The new-look East Bengal side stunned Mohun Bagan in a fiery Kolkata Derby to storm into the semifinals of the Durand Cup, riding on a double strike from Greek striker Dimitrios Diamantakos. Diamantakos was brought on in the 18th minute of the match after Moroccan forward Hamid Ahadad limped off injured, and it turned out to be a game-changing call. The 32-year-old ended the deadlock in the 38th minute when he converted from the penalty spot, and later, seven minutes into the second half, he doubled the lead for East Bengal with a sharp finish that left the ISL champions' defence flat-footed. Mohun Bagan did find one back after Anirudh Thapa's stunning long-range strike in the 68th minute, but East Bengal's resolute defence held firm to register their first top-level Derby win over their rivals in more than 18 months. East Bengal will face fellow Kolkata side Diamond Harbour FC at the same venue on August 20 for a place in the final.

Diamond Harbour FC stun Jamshedpur FC to make Durand Cup semis

Jamshedpur FC 's first match since their head coach Khalid Jamil left the club to take charge of the Indian national team ended in a shock as Durand Cup debutants Diamond Harbour FC knocked them out in the quarterfinals in Jamshedpur on Sunday. Playing at the JRD Tata Complex, the team from West Bengal rode the brace of unlikely hero Sairuat Kima, who hails from Mizoram, to register the biggest shock of the tournament and stun the hosts 2-0 in front of a raucous crowd and make it to the semifinals. It was in the third minute itself that the visitors silenced the home fans as the defender from the northeast state netted from close quarters following a long throw that unsettled the home side. Kima was unmarked, and he made sure to put it past JFC goalkeeper Amrit Gope. As the hosts tried to get back into the game and solidified their midfield, Diamond Harbour scored their second of the match in the 41st minute. This time it was on the counter. After Samuel Lalmuanpuia lofted a cross from the right flank, it deflected into Kima's path, and he volleyed it clinically into the net doubling the visitors' advantage. Steven Dias, who took over the Indian Super League side on an interim basis, did his best to motivate his players in the second half and they did show a lot of fight. But they just couldn't find the target. The clearest opening came when Mohammed Sanan cut inside and played a low shot. However, Diamond Harbour goalkeeper Mirshad Michu got down sharply to keep it away and then sprang up to palm away VP Suhair's volleyed follow-up in a superb double save that preserved the two-goal cushion. In the end, the Kibu Vicuna-coached side held on for one of their greatest wins as not only Kima's brace but also their defensive effort played a huge role in beating JFC at the Furnace.
