All the best, BN man tells Kedah MIC after motion to work with PN

PETALING JAYA : A Kedah Barisan Nasional leader wished MIC 'all the best' after the party's Kedah chapter passed a motion to work with Perikatan Nasional in the next general election.
Kedah BN information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said the motion signalled Kedah MIC's unwillingness to continue working with BN to strengthen their political presence in the state.
If this was the will of MIC's grassroots, he said, BN would not beg for the support of those who had turned their backs on the coalition.
'Kedah MIC is free to make its own political choices. But let it be clear to all that once the door is opened for you to leave, do not one day return demanding seats, privileges, or space in BN after having made your choice to support the other side.
'Loyalty is not something to be toyed with, traded during elections and reclaimed in times of difficulty,' he told FMT.
The motion was raised by a Kedah MIC delegate at the party's state annual general meeting yesterday, which was also attended by MIC president SA Vigneswaran.
Kedah MIC chairman SK Suresh said, however, that the motion would be brought to the central leadership for a final decision, China Press reported.
Kedah has been led by menteri besar Sanusi Nor from PN since May 2020.
Shaiful, who is also the Kedah Umno information chief, believed Kedah MIC's decision was driven by the desire to secure more seats and safeguard its political survival, after feeling sidelined in the unity government.
'Kedah BN has never feared changes in the political landscape, especially when it involves parting ways with any component party.
'For us, losing partners who no longer share our direction is not a loss; it is actually an opportunity for the state chapter to move faster and with greater focus, without the burden of appeasing those who are no longer with us,' he said.
'Stop with the posturing'
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi described Kedah MIC's motion to work with PN as 'mere posturing' as it lacked the courage to table a motion to leave BN altogether.
'Yes, joining PN might mean contesting more seats, but what's the point of contesting many seats if you lose them all?' he said in a Facebook post.
He cited the case of Gerakan president Dominic Lau contesting the Bayan Lepas state seat in the 2023 election and losing because he did not have the backing of PAS members.
In comparison, Puad said, MCA president Wee Ka Siong contested the Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat in the 15th general election and, with Umno's backing, won the Malay-majority seat with a larger majority than in the previous nationwide polls.
'MIC deputy president M Saravanan contested in Tapah, a Malay-majority seat (and won). But MIC's president wasn't as fortunate; he contested in Sungai Siput, MIC's former stronghold, not Umno's. With only 35% Malay voters there, Vigneswaran lost,' he said.

Bangladesh chief advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus to undertake official visit to Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 10 (Bernama): Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus will undertake an official visit to Malaysia from Monday until Wednesday (Aug 11 to Aug 13, 2025), at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a statement on Sunday, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said the visit reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, and several advisors and senior government officials will accompany Yunus. The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said that Yunus will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex on Aug 12, followed by a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister. "Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence. "The discussions will also include regional and international developments of mutual interest,' the statement said. During the visit, Yunus and Anwar will witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of defence, energy, strategic and international studies, capacity building in semiconductors, and trade promotion. An Exchange of Notes will also be signed in the areas of diplomatic training and higher education. The ministry said in honour of Yunus and his delegation, the Prime Minister will host an official luncheon at the Seri Perdana Complex. It said that on Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Chief Advisor will also attend a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh reached RM13.35 billion (US$2.92 billion), an increase of 5.1 per cent compared with 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactures. It said the visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster stronger cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, building upon the strong foundation established since diplomatic ties were forged in 1972. - Bernama

Warisan's claim of paying off RM1bil state debt misleading, says Masidi

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's claim that the Parti Warisan-led administration in 2019 paid off RM1bil of Sabah's debts is misleading, says Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. The Sabah Finance Minister said the debt in question, the State Government of Sabah Bonds (2014/2019), was issued in December 2014 during the Barisan Nasional administration. As part of the bond's terms, Bank Negara required the state government to establish a dedicated sinking fund (Kumpulan Wang Amanah Bagi Bayaran Balik Bon) to ensure full repayment upon maturity. "This was a safeguard to prevent the repayment from becoming a heavy financial burden on the state's finances," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 10). Under the arrangement, RM200mil was deposited into the sinking fund annually over five years until 2019. By the time Warisan took office in 2018, most of the repayment funds had already been secured. "In 2019, the sinking fund was RM1bil, enabling the state government to make a one-off bullet payment to settle the bond in full," he said. Masidi said it was inaccurate to suggest the repayment was the result of any special action by the then-Warisan-led government, adding that it was due to prudent financial planning put in place by the previous administration.
