Thursday was Jordan Spieth's 297th start on the PGA Tour. It's also the first time he has withdrawn from an event. Spieth, the 13-time PGA Tour winner and 2017 champion at the Travelers Championship, withdrew Thursday during the first round. Golf Channel cameras caught Spieth dealing with some sort of injury early on in the round and receiving treatment when he made the turn. Spieth looked in discomfort on nearly every full swing, and he finally decided to WD on the 13th hole. Spieth was 5 over with five bogeys and no birdies in his 12 holes he completed. Multiple times, he dropped clubs when swinging and looked to be dealing with discomfort in his neck, shoulder and upper back area.
