Pfister Hotel ranked among country's best historic hotels in 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards
The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee has been voted one of America's best historic hotels in the USA TODAY 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards for the third year in a row. The East Town landmark, at 424 E. Wisconsin Ave., was ninth on the list, three places lower than its rank in 2024 and 2023. The Pfister opened in 1893 and was billed as the "Grand Hotel of the West," according to USA TODAY's description of the building. Also mentioned was the building's 23rd floor cocktail lounge, Blu, and its views of Lake Michigan and the city. The hotel has 307 newly renovated guest rooms. The story noted that it was the first hotel in America with a thermostat for each guest room, and it's home to the largest collection of Victorian art of any hotel in the world. The Pfister Hotel cost nearly $1 million to build. It was designed by architect Charles Koch and features a Romanesque Revival design, according to its website. It's operated by Marcus Hotels & Resorts Inc., a division of Marcus Corporation. That corporation was founded in 1935 by Ben Marcus with the purchase of a single movie theater in Ripon. Marcus Corp. bought The Pfister in 1962 as it expanded into the lodging industry. In 2018, The Pfister was the runner-up in 10Best's ranking of the country's Best Haunted Hotels, a detail that steers some Major League Baseball players clear of staying there. Fantasy Premier League: All of our pre-season tips ahead of the 2025-26 campaign
The Premier League season kicks off tonight, so if you haven't already, it's time to get your Fantasy Premier League team in order. Whether you are making your FPL debut, have been trying (and failing) to master the game for years or have become the player to beat in your mini leagues, we have got something for you. Advertisement Listed below are all of The Athletic's FPL articles in anticipation of the 2025-26 season. And don't forget, the deadline for submitting your teams for Gameweek 1 is today (Friday) at 6.30pm BST/1.30pm ET. Good luck! Editor's note: These guides to FPL management were correct at the time of writing, but some selections and stats, such as the highest-selected players, and prices are liable to change quickly, based on form, fitness and transfers. We started our pre-season FPL analysis by revealing the best budget enablers, as well as those you should avoid for Gameweek 1 (sorry, Alexander Isak!). As new Premier League signings arrived thick and fast at the beginning of August, we also considered the quandary of striking the right balance between new signings and proven players. Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka — premium players get you the points, but they also take up big chunks of your FPL transfer budget. So we detailed which ones to invest in. We then ran the rule on chip strategies to ensure you maximise their value. And with pre-season form often an unreliable indicator in the classic battle of form versus fixtures, we analysed the opening match-ups from an FPL point-scoring perspective. Look away now, Arsenal fans. A good start in FPL can put you on the path to glory, so we listed our seven rules for success to set the tone for the entire campaign. Next, and with the introduction of defensive contribution (DC) points this season, we ran through the more defensive-minded midfielders and centre-backs who are in the frame to pick up extra points. We then answered your mailbag questions. From the best goalkeeper rotational pair and cheap striking options to why 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 will be the key and the ultimate dark-horse pick for a midfield spot, we covered all the bases. And, published today, we have an interview with FPL fixture guru Ben Crellin, arguably one of the most vital and authoritative FPL content creators out there, after he bravely shared his personal story earlier this year. Plus, if you still have more questions ahead of this weekend's action and how to shape your team, Ben Dinnery of will be on hand today in a Q&A to talk you through the players to target, who to avoid, and the injury doubts you need to be aware of to give you the best chance of hitting the ground running. Send your questions to him here, and Ben will be online to offer his expert insight at 3pm-4pm UK time (10am-11am ET). Spot the pattern. John Daly II, son of the 2-time major champion, advances to quarterfinals of US Amateur
SAN FRANCISCO — John Daly II and Niall Shiels Donegan each won two matches Thursday at The Olympic Club to advance to the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals as more top-ranked players dropped out. Daly, the son of two-time major champion John Daly, beat Nate Smith 2 and 1 in the morning in the round of 32, then topped Daniel Bennett of South Africa 3 and 2 in the afternoon in the round of 16. Daly, a senior-to-be at Arkansas, set up a match with Mason Howell, the 18-year-old from Georgia who qualified for the U.S. Open this year with rounds of 63-63 from the Atlanta sectional. Howell beat second-ranked Virginia senior Ben James 1 up and Max Herendeen 2 and 1. In the morning, Herendeen eliminated top-ranked Jackson Koivun 3 and 2. Donegan had two 1-up victories, topping ninth-ranked Christiaan Maas of South Africa and fourth-ranked Preston Stout, the Oklahoma State junior who was the stroke-play medalist. Donegan, who plays under the Scottish flag and lives in the Bay Area, pulled even with Stout with a birdie on the par-3 15th and took the lead with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-5 16th. Donegan was among 17 players who advanced from a 20-man playoff Wednesday morning to determine the final 64 for match play. His father, Lawrence, was a longtime golf correspondent for The Guardian. Donegan, will face Jacob Modleski, a 2-up winner over Paul Chang of China. Modleski, at No. 15, is the top player left in the world amateur ranking. Miles Russell, 16, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., also advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Mahanth Chirravuri 2 and 1. Russell is ranked No. 16. Russell will face 29th-ranked Eric Lee, a 2-up winner over Josh Duangmanee when Duangmanee lost his ball off the tee on the final hole. In the other quarterfinal, Jimmy Abdo will play Jackson Herrington.
