From Girls' Generation To SHINee: 6 K-pop Songs Originally Sung By Western Artists
Did you know that some of your favourite and most iconic K-pop songs were originally sung, or even written, by Western artists? Many of these demo versions have leaked online over the years (and no, we can't share them here), but we can share with you which Western artists were behind the original versions before your favourite idols made them their own.
1. Kesha – 'Run Devil Run' (Girls' Generation)
Before Kesha rose to fame as a pop star in her own right, she wrote and recorded numerous songs for other artists. One notable example is the demo version of Girls' Generation (소녀시대)'s hit 'Run Devil Run', which features Kesha's vocals. Although the track received mixed reviews from critics at the time, it quickly became a fan favourite and is now considered one of the group's most iconic releases.
2. Zara Larsson – 'More & More' (TWICE)
TWICE (트와이스)'s 'More & More' originally had a different title. When it was still in demo form, it was called 'Back & Forth' and was sung by Swedish pop star Zara Larsson. Not only did she record the original version, but she was also credited as one of the songwriters before the track was handed over to the K-pop group. 'More & More' was later released as TWICE's comeback single for their mini album of the same name, earning positive reviews from both fans and critics alike.
3. Bebe Rexha – 'Lucifer' (SHINee)
@beberexha
Wrote this demo when I was 17 and it got turned into a big kpop song, Lucifer by SHINee!
♬ original sound – Bebe Rexha
Possibly one of the most iconic K-pop tracks ever – but who would've thought Bebe Rexha had a hand in it? Back in 2020, the singer shared a snippet of the demo version of SHINee (샤이니)'s 'Lucifer', featuring her own vocals, before playing the group's official release. Fans were stunned to learn that Bebe Rexha had been part of the song's early production, further cementing her unexpected influence in K-pop history.
4. Bebe Rexha – 'Tally' (BLACKPINK)
Although she didn't write the song, Bebe Rexha recorded the demo vocals for BLACKPINK (블랙핑)'s 'Tally.' The track was originally intended for her 2021 album, 'Better Mistakes', but composer Brian Lee later played it for YG Entertainment producer Teddy, who saw its potential as a BLACKPINK song. The rest, as they say, is history.
5. Raye – 'Better Things' (aespa)
Not only was Raye one of the original vocalists and co-writers of Lisa's 'Born Again,' she was also the artist behind aespa (에스파)'s 'Better Things' in 2023 — the group's first English-language single. The group later released a remix version, which had Raye as the featured artist. The British singer also once performed a portion of the song live on stage during her show in Oakland the same year.
6. Shaylen – 'Ko Ko Bop' (EXO)
Possibly the only officially released demo on this list, the original version of EXO (엑소)'s 'Ko Ko Bop' was shared by American singer Shaylen in celebration of the song reaching over 100 million streams and its third anniversary. The demo, released on her YouTube channel, was co-written by Shaylen and Tay Jasper and produced by Styalz Fuego.
What K-pop songs would you like to hear in the early demo version?

(Video) Soft Tones & Vintage Touch: A Look Inside Rapper DAWN's Cosy Home
It's not often that fans get a glimpse inside a K-pop idol's home, as most prefer to keep that part of their lives private. However, a handful have been happy to share their personal space, offering an insight into how these superstars live when they are off stage. Recently, DAWN (던) uploaded a video to his YouTube channel, giving fans a tour of his home. Here's a look inside the rapper's abode: The video opens with DAWN welcoming viewers into his home, starting with the living room, which he described as his favourite area of the house. Speaking about the interior design, he explained that it was inspired by a blend of Western and Asian styles. He then highlighted some of his favourite decorations in the room, including an African Mancala set (known locally in Malaysia as Congkak), which he found at an antique store. One of his most prized possessions is a wall decoration known as a Gongjakseon, a traditional Korean fan that resembles a male peacock with its feathers spread. The piece was created by artisan Lee Gwang-gu, and the idol revealed that he had come across it at a second-hand marketplace. 'The seller didn't even know it was by Lee Gwang-gu, and I felt that someone who recognised its value should own it, so I bought it for myself,' said the rapper. DAWN then gave fans a look at his workspace, which features a keyboard, recording equipment and speakers, before moving on to the rest of the house, including the dining area, kitchen and dressing room with a walk-in closet. After showing his minimalistic bedroom, the singer revealed his DJ set, where he played vinyl records on the turntables. In the comments section, fans praised DAWN for his exquisite taste in interior design, noting how beautiful and cosy his home looks. Others said they hoped to see more videos from him in the near future. As this was only the first episode of his home tour, we look forward to seeing what else he has to share soon. Police Arrest Man For Threatening To Plant Explosives At PLAVE's Upcoming Concert
Concerts are meant to be exciting events where fans gather to see their favourite artists perform. Unfortunately, many K-pop concerts have been targeted with bomb threats, sparking concern. Recently, news outlets reported that a man had recently threatened to plant a bomb at PLAVE's (플레이브) upcoming Seoul concert. The virtual group will hold an encore concert at Gocheok Sky Dome on 21st and 22nd November 2025 as part of their Asia tour. According to reports, the suspect, referred to as Mr. A, shared an edited promotional photo of the concert on 19th August 2025 (Tuesday) with the phrase 'I will plant explosives'. After receiving reports of the social media post, police arrested Mr. A. During questioning, the man reportedly stated that the post was 'just a prank'. The case has since been transferred to the police with jurisdiction over Mr. A's residence for further investigation. The 20-something is facing charges for public intimidation. Earlier this year, South Korea criminalised threats against the general public. Sadly, the number of bomb threats at K-pop concerts is rising, even with the new law on public intimidation. Earlier this month, K-pop group THE BOYZ had to delay their concert at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena after the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation (KSPO) received an anonymous fax claiming that an explosive device had been placed at the venue. Everyone in the building was instructed to evacuate while authorities searched for the device. Thankfully, the police found no explosive devices, and the concert was able to proceed as usual. However, the incident sparked concern over the safety and caution at large-scale events. Since many of these threats ended up as pranks by netizens, there is now a debate on whether the government should take stronger legal measures, as weak penalties for making false threats may embolden offenders. Even if they end up as hoaxes, bomb threats should be taken seriously as they pose a potential danger to the public. We hope the South Korean government will take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of its citizens. At the same time, the public should remain vigilant for any suspicious activity online and offline. Source: Chosun News
