Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific unveils deal to buy 14 Boeing jets
Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific said Wednesday it would place a US$8.1-billion order for 14 Boeing jets, its first order with the American aircraft maker for 12 years. The airline has "exercised the purchase rights... to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft; and... secured the right to acquire up to seven additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft", it said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. The new order expects the aircraft to be delivered by 2034, according to a separate filing. Cathay Pacific made the announcement as it reported its attributable profit rose slightly to HK$3.65 billion (US$4.65 million), benefiting from a pick-up in travel demand in Asia. Chair Patrick Healy heralded a "solid financial performance" in the filing. The company's passenger airlines, including Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express, have launched or announced 19 new destinations so far in 2025, with "more to come", he said. Cathay now flies to more than 100 passenger destinations globally, he added. However, the company warned that its lowcost airlines are facing short-term challenges as pick-up in bookings is "yet to return to normal levels". twa/reb/dan Sign in to access your portfolio

The Tech That Keeps Planes Flying for Ultra-Long-Haul Flights
Aug 6, 2025 9:00 AM Wide wingspans, more powerful engines, and high-efficiency materials are making super long flights more possible than ever. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the maiden flight of the Airbus A380, the double-decker, wide-body aircraft that remains the largest passenger plane ever built. At 10:30 am local time on April 27, 2005, the giant, four-engine aircraft lifted off from the airport in Blagnac, a suburb of Toulouse in southern France, and did a quick loop of the area, staying within about 100 miles of the tarmac. When it took its first commercial flight six months later, the A380—which typically seats more than 500 passengers and can hold a maximum of 853—was heralded as the future of long-haul and ultra-long-haul aviation. While the A380 has flown more than 300 million passengers on over 800,000 journeys, according to Airbus, the last 20 years have seen a different trajectory in long-distance air travel. (Long-haul flights are generally those that last for around six to 16 hours, and ultra-long-haul are those over 16 hours.) The A380 is no longer produced, and the best and most popular airplanes for long-haul flights have gotten much more efficient than previous-generation aircraft. Two of the most common long-haul aircrafts today are the Airbus A350, which typically accommodates 330 to 410 passengers, depending on the model, and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which seats 292 passengers on average. These aircraft are capable of making the longest flights possible with just two engines instead of four. This shift is largely due to huge gains in aircraft technology, including advanced engines, lighter components in the wings and body, and better computer technology to increase efficiency. Today's long-haul flights are quieter, more fuel-efficient, safer than ever before, and somewhat more comfortable for passengers. This story is part of The New Era of Work Travel , a collaboration between the editors of WIRED and Condé Nast Traveler to help you navigate the perks and pitfalls of the modern business trip. One of the defining features of this generation of aircraft is a large wingspan. The A350 has a wingspan of over 212 feet, which is wider than the Leaning Tower of Pisa is tall. (The A380-800, by comparison, has a wingspan of 262 feet, but it has a maximum takeoff weight of more than 1.2 million pounds, double that of the A350-900). Longer wingspans on a smaller aircraft typically mean they can stay in the air for longer with less power, similar to how a bird with large wings can harness the slightest breeze and float easily for long distances. 'They basically get a lot of lift with a little power requirement compared to smaller wingspans,' says Mory Gharib, director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at Caltech. 'The shorter the wing is, the higher the drag. So you need to actually have a larger engine, and also the fuel you carry and all those things are going to be limiting.' The increased wingspan is one reason the A350-900 can fly from New York to Singapore—the longest flight in the world—with just two engines. Another crucial factor is that, over the last 30 years, aircraft engines have become substantially more efficient, even though the fundamental turbine technology remains the same. Improvements include advances in the manufacturing of lighter engine blades made of carbon-fiber composite that are twice the strength and significantly lighter than titanium blades; enhanced cooling systems; and sophisticated control programs that monitor crucial data during flight such as air pressure, temperature, airspeed, and more. The optimal location of engines on the wing has also been refined. 'If you look at the 747, with four engines—now you can provide the same amount of thrust on two engines that burn 20 percent to 30 percent less fuel than those engines that were produced 20 to 30 years ago,' says Cary Grant, an assistant professor of Aeronautical Science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. The difference lies in how the engines use airflow. Turbojet engines used in older aircraft force all incoming air through the engine core and combustion chambers, generating thrust by ejecting exhaust gases out the back at high speeds. This process used more energy and was much louder than newer engines. Modern long-haul aircraft use what are called high-bypass engines, which use a system that allows a large volume of air to flow around the engine core. The thrust, then, is generated primarily by the large fan at the front of the engine—the part one can see by looking directly into it—as opposed to the exhaust shooting out the back. This design has greatly improved engine efficiency as the ratio of bypass air increased. The new engines produce an extraordinary amount of power. The General Electric high-bypass engine, GEnx, which powers the Dreamliner, is almost as wide as a Boeing 737's fuselage. According to GE's website, the engine has a 10:1 bypass ratio, which means that 10 times more air goes around the outside of the engine rather than through the engine core for combustion. Computer-aided design has also made the blades more efficient and stronger, allowing them to spin at 30,000 to 40,000 rpm. 'You've got to be able to have structures that can withstand that type of rotational and torsional stress,' Grant says. Ceramic materials used in the engine core allow for higher internal operating temperatures than nickel-based super alloy metals, which are currently used in most engines. The use of lightweight composite materials, namely carbon fiber, in the aircraft's wings and fuselage has significantly reduced the overall weight of the aircraft. The less an aircraft weighs, the less energy is required to power it. The overall designs of these aircraft are more aerodynamic as well. The wings on both the A350 and the Dreamliner variants are thinner than on previous generations, and the fuselage designs, notably the Dreamliner's dolphin-like nose, generally create less drag. In the cockpit, new technologies simplify pilot controls and problem-solving through advanced feedback systems, which help reduce pilot workload and increase performance. Today's long-haul aircraft allow for semi-autonomous flight—in fact, the technology already exists for fully autonomous flights, even for large commercial aircraft. Even the passenger experience has improved, although the pace of that technology may not have kept up with that of the airplane itself. The biggest difference between today's commercial aircraft and previous generations is the ability to control cabin pressure, humidity, and air circulation. '[When] Boeing produced the 787, they were able to keep the atmosphere humidified,' says Grant. 'Just that alone is a huge improvement for people—you know, after a nine- or 10-hour flight it used to feel like you had cornflakes in your nose.' The other major improvement on long-haul flights, according to Grant? Today's airline Wi-Fi is actually good.
