He used alcohol to 'groom' a teenage girl before having sex with her

A man has been jailed for having sex with a teenage girl. Matthew Pritchard manipulated and gave the girl alcohol, Caernarfon Crown Court heard.
Pritchard, of Dol Eithin, Caergeiliog, admitted four counts of sexual activity with a child and one of sexual communication with a child. Myles Wilson, prosecuting, said the offending started when Pritchard, aged 24, was aged 18 to 19 and the victim was aged 13.
He added the victim on the Snapchat social media platform days before her 14th birthday, and they sent each other sexual photos before meeting up on a beach on Anglesey. He gave her alcohol before having sex with her.
Mr Wilson said this was reported to police, but the defendant told the victim to deny it, and to delete messages between them. He continued to see the victim.
He supplied her with alcohol, but would take cannabis himself and would also make her pose for sexual photos and would send her images of himself engaged in a sexual act. During that time they had sex.
Mr Wilson said the victim, who cannot be identified, described the defendant as "jealous and controlling". He said: "He would tell her she wasn't allowed to meet her friends and would monitor her social media."
The court heard Pritchard had no previous convictions and had committed no offences since.
Richard Edwards, defending, said he admitted the offences at an early stage, he was young at the time of the offences, which had happened a number of years ago.
He had been suffering mental health issues and it was a "lonely period" of his life, when he was vulnerable. He said he knows it was "stupid, selfish and wrong".
Pritchard was hard working, was now a duty manager at a Premier Inn and in a stable four-year relationship, with his partner and five-month-old child and they would lose their rented home if he was imprisoned. He had moved on from the offences which had happened a number of years ago, had matured and was assessed as a low level of risk of reoffending.
Judge Nicola Jones said the defendant was "fully aware of her age". She said: "You filmed her having intercourse and made her pose for photos." She said the defendant had used alcohol in "grooming her".
The judge added: "This has had a devastating effect on her life. She now suffers from severe psychological harm and has anti-depressants for anxiety and depression and is having to go through therapy."
Taking into account his age, his immaturity and that he was suffering a mental disorder at the time, Judge Jones sentenced Pritchard to a total of four years in prison, with half to be served in custody and half on licence.
He was also given an indefinite notification requirement, an indefinite sexual harm prevention order with conditions and an indefinite restraining order from contacting the victim. A deprivation order was also made for any devices seized during the investigation.
Pritchard must also pay a statutory surcharge. The victim was directed to a compensation authority.

The 26-year-old was a special needs teacher at St James High School in St James, Missouri, during the time of the crimes between September 8 and October 19. Laughlin pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of endangering the welfare of a child without sexual contact, KRCG reported. Maries County officials first launched an investigation after a Phelps County detective tipped them off about an inappropriate relationship at the school, KSDK reported at the time, citing a probable cause statement by the County Sheriff's Office. The teen then told cops that Laughlin approached him online and sent him nudes and video of herself using a dildo, before asking for images from him in return. She reportedly asked him to delete the sexually explicit content out of fear of getting into legal trouble, or of people finding out. While he did delete some of them, he showed several others to the police. He told cops that "things progressed fast" after the Snapchat exchange, and that the mum-of-one had kissed him in a classroom. She allegedly invited him to have sex, but he "made excuses" because "he did not feel comfortable", according to a probable cause statement by the Maries County Sheriff's Office. Teacher, 33, groomed pupil, 16, for sex on Snapchat then raped her when she tried to cut off contact, court told

A teacher called in sick to meet a female pupil he had groomed for sex on Snapchat – then raped her after she tried to cut off contact, a court heard. Jurors were told Jakob Sorensen became 'obsessed' with the 16-year-old girl and began messaging her on the social media app. Although she thought the 33-year-old was too old for Snapchat she engaged with him which led to him 'sexting' her during school time, the court heard. Sorensen, who was head of science at the school, bought her vapes and alcohol before taking her out in his car where they were intimate. He called in sick the first time he took her out in his car to have sex, jurors were told. After that they went out multiple times a week after school to have sex. The relationship went on for several months until she ended it after starting college, jurors heard. A court heard Sorensen, a father who had a long-term partner, took the break-up badly and became jealous about boys she was seeing. He is alleged to have forced himself on her when they met up again, despite her saying 'no' to sex. Sorensen admits a charge of sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust but denies a charge of rape. Bournemouth Crown Court heard on Tuesday how Sorensen had groomed the girl while at a school in the Dorset town, gaining her trust before the teacher 'crossed the line' by sending her his Snapchat name. The girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told police: "I thought he's a bit old for Snapchat and I didn't think that was something teachers and students were allowed to communicate on. "But I didn't want to scare him off and not have that person to confide in." She said Sorenson turned the chat sexual which made her feel 'very uncomfortable' and set off 'alarm bells'. The court was told Sorensen then asked her to meet up outside of school to 'make out'. The girl said: 'I remember feeling quite disturbed, I felt like I was very out of my depth but didn't know what to do. 'I had never had anyone call me beautiful, I was very insecure and had low self-esteem.' After he kissed her for the first time he started 'sexting' during school hours, the court heard. He then called in sick to school the first time he took her out to have sex. He did not use protection and gave her money to get the morning after pill, the jury was told. She told police that from then on they would go out in his car multiple times a week after school to have sex and Sorensen would tell her he was in love with her. She said: "He was telling me how much he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He wanted me to have his children and said he'd found his soul mate." But the girl did not want a relationship and when she started college she met a boy her own age she had feelings for. She tried to break things off with Sorensen but said he was "distraught". She said: "He would regularly break down and cry. He would make me feel incredibly guilty and tell me how much he needed me." The girl tried to cut off contact several times over the following months but they met up on occasions. She said of the occasion he is alleged to have raped her: "He asked me to have sex with him, I said 'no'. 'I said 'no' multiple times. He kept grabbing me, trying to push me to have sex with him. "He kept saying things like 'you know you want to' then got on top of me. I turned my head away and closed my eyes. "I felt very violated, because I had said no." Sorensen, from Verwood, Dorset, has admitted one charge of sexual activity with a child in a position of trust but denies a charge of rape. The trial continues.

Married teacher avoids jail for sexting boy after statutory rape charges were dropped

A married Missouri teacher who sent nude photos and explicit sex videos to a 16-year-old student has avoided prison in a jaw-dropping plea deal that has outraged parents, stunned prosecutors, and shaken the quiet town of St. James. Rikki Lynn Laughlin, 26, a former special education teacher at St. James High School, was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to a single count of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. The judge suspended her five-year prison sentence, despite the mountain of evidence prosecutors had gathered over months. The charges she avoided were staggering: second-degree statutory rape, possession of child pornography, sexual exploitation of a minor, tampering with a victim, tampering with physical evidence, furnishing pornographic material to a minor, and even second-degree sexual trafficking of a child under 18. But in a last-minute deal in Grundy County Circuit Court the charges were quietly dropped in exchange for a guilty plea to the lesser felony. The illicit relationship began in September 2023, when Laughlin began messaging the teen student on Snapchat, according to investigators. Over the following weeks, she sent him nude photographs, solicited sexually explicit images, sent him a video of herself using a sex toy and even invited him over for sex while her husband was out of town. The student later told police that 'things progressed fast' and that they had kissed. When asked to come over for sex, the boy declined, saying 'he did not feel comfortable.' Authorities say when word of the relationship began to spread at school, Laughlin panicked. According to the probable cause statement from the Maries County Sheriff's Office, she begged the student to delete their message history telling him, 'I could go to jail if those pictures come out.' Police later found the explicit content on the student's phone. The revelations hit especially hard given Laughlin's wholesome image online. At the time of the crimes, she was married to Grant Andrew Laughlin, 23, and the couple had a one-year-old daughter. They couple were married in June 2022. On Facebook, Laughlin painted a very different portrait with photos of her with her baby and husband, posing with rifles, riding horses, and waving Trump flags ahead of the 2020 election. One image from September 2021 shows the couple smiling side-by-side before their wedding. Another captures the young family posing in front of a Christmas tree. But behind the scenes, investigators say Laughlin was using Snapchat to groom a teenage student, building trust and then sending graphic content. Laughlin later claimed, 'I was not aware he was a minor,' according to the detective's report. But under Missouri law, the age of consent is 17 - and the boy was 16. The case came to light after a Phelps County detective alerted Maries County authorities about a rumored teacher-student relationship at St. James High School. Investigators quickly determined the victim was a student and obtained a warrant. Laughlin initially denied wrongdoing but ultimately allowed police to search her phone. Inside, they found a video matching the boy's description, Laughlin performing a sexual act and sending it to the student. A user on Reddit claimed they were a fellow classmate of the alleged victim. They said: 'I go to St. James and honestly this shook me to my core, knowing there was a teacher involving themselves with students I know scared me. what if this happened to me or my friends? 'What really got to me was how people reacted. when the student came back to school everyone started congratulating him, praising him and people on Snapchat are posting about how pretty she is and how lucky he was, that is absolutely disgusting.' On October 23, 2024, prosecutors charged her with seven felonies and a misdemeanor. The case was transferred to Grundy County in May 2024, and in July 2025, Laughlin pleaded guilty to a single lesser charge with no jail time and no requirement to sign the sex offenders registry. The St. James School District, which originally reported the relationship to authorities, has declined to comment publicly since the plea agreement. No officials have addressed whether Laughlin's teaching license will be revoked, or what safeguards have been implemented to prevent similar abuse.
