John Calipari Shares A Michael Jordan 'Took It Personally' Story: "Kerry Ain't Scoring Again"
John Calipari has been a head coach for over 40 years, and while he has spent the majority of his time in college, he did have a brief stint in the NBA. Calipari coached the New Jersey Nets from 1996 to 1999, and during an episode of the Two Cents Podcast, shared an epic Michael Jordan 'took it personally' story.
'We're playing [Jordan] and I had Kerry Kittles," Calipari said. "... [Kittles] has 17 in the first quarter on Michael. So now, we come out of the quarter, and Michael's going like that (made an '0' with his right hand) to me. And I'm looking down and I look up and I look down and I look back up and he's [still] going like that.
"And I look at my staff and I go, 'Is he doing that to me?'" Calipari continued. "They go, 'Mm-hmm.' [I asked], 'Well, what the hell does it mean?' [They said], 'That Kerry ain't scoring again.' ... I had to get him out of the game and leave him out so my man wouldn't break his spirit. I just said forget the game, it's gonna break my man's spirit."
The game that Calipari was referring to took place on Dec. 23, 1996, at the United Center. Kerry Kittles, who had been selected with the eighth pick of the 1996 NBA Draft, got off to a red-hot start.
As Calipari stated, Kittles had 17 points in the first quarter, nearly outscoring the Bulls by himself. The rookie went a perfect 7-7 from the field and 3-3 from beyond the arc in the period to help the Nets jump out to a 32-18 lead.
Unfortunately for Kittles, he had poked the bear that was Jordan by putting on that show. The youngster didn't even get to attempt a shot in the second quarter, and Calipari opted to play him just over five minutes in the period, presumably to save him.
Jordan wasn't going to let up, though. Kittles played the entire third quarter and only attempted one shot, which he missed. He had been completely taken out of the game.
While this was going on, the Bulls had managed to turn things around as well. They were up 87-66 entering the fourth quarter, and head coach Phil Jackson decided to pull his starters.
Kittles would put up five more shots in what was basically garbage time and made one of them. He finished the night with 19 points (8-13 FG), four rebounds, two assists, three steals, and one block.
Jordan, meanwhile, had 24 points (10-18 FG), three rebounds, and four assists. It wasn't his greatest showing offensively, but he still managed to stamp his authority on the contest on the defensive end.
It speaks to Jordan's greatness that he was capable of having a big impact on both ends of the floor for much of his career. He made the All-Defensive First Team nine times and won the scoring title in each of those nine years, too. What do the Nets have in former UNC forward Drake Powell?
NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets selected forward Drake Powell out of the University of North Carolina with the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft about two months ago. Brooklyn made five first-round picks in the Draft and Powell is one of the players that could present a different skill set from the rest of the class. Powell is ready for the change in role. "I feel like my defense, that's mainly just pride. That's just something that I've had since growing up at a young age playing with my older brother, older cousin," Powell said during the press conference that the Nets put on with the rookies following the Draft. Coming into the Draft, Powell was regarded as the prototypical 3-and-D wing who has the potential to add more to his game due to how he played in high school. "He didn't put up flashy numbers as a freshman, but he showed glimpses of his potential on both ends," Bleacher Report's NBA staff wrote in its scouting report of Powell. "His frame, motor and willingness to compete give him a strong foundation to build on. Of course, Powell's game is still raw, especially on offense. He will need time to polish his handle, shot and feel, particularly in the half court." Powell, 19, is coming off a 2024-25 college basketball season at North Carolina in which he averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 48.3% from the field and 37.9% from three-point land. Despite heading into his freshman season as a 2024 McDonald's All-American, Powell was asked to play a supporting role to RJ Davis and Ian Jackson. Powell will be entering a 2025-26 season in which he will have to compete with the likes of Michael Porter Jr., Ziaire Williams, and Terance Mann for playing time at the small forward position for the Nets. Brooklyn finished the 2024-25 season 20th in defensive rating (115.8) so if Powell can bring their defensive ability to the floor early on, he may be able to play enough to show his growth on the offensive end as well.

Potential new Trail Blazers ownership would bring ‘swagger,' hopes to close deal by end of March
PORTLAND, Ore. — If Tom Dundon and his investment group end up buying the Trail Blazers, a new vibe will engulf the franchise, a source close to Dundon says. 'He brings a swagger,'' the source said to The Athletic. 'If Tom was the owner last year, he would have been trying to get Luka (Dončić). He would be like, 'Why should the Lakers have him?''' Advertisement Dundon, the owner of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes, has reached an exclusivity agreement with Paul Allen's estate, which means there will be no negotiations with other interested buyers. Dundon's group is in the process of negotiating documents, but the source close to Dundon says all major points have been agreed upon. The hope is to have a purchase agreement signed in September. A target date of March 31, 2026, has been set for the close of the deal. The estate expressed a desire for the team to stay in Oregon, and the source told The Athletic the team will remain in Portland. Dundon, who is from Dallas, has teamed with Chicago-based investor Marc Zahr and Sheel Tyle, the co-CEO of Collective Global Management, to buy the team from Allen's estate for $4.25 billion.
