Telangana teachers turn bird detectives, capture first live sighting of elusive Buttonquail
Often mistaken for a quail, the small buttonquail is a secretive, ground-dwelling bird that inhabits grasslands, scrublands and dry farmlands across Asia and Africa. It is notoriously difficult to spot, preferring to run instead of fly and blending effortlessly into its surroundings. Adding to its mystique is its unusual mating behaviour: the female initiates courtship, while the male incubates the eggs and raises the chicks.
The duo's discovery adds to a growing list of significant sightings by KBC. In October 2024, they recorded 150 to 200 endangered Indian Skimmers at the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) in Karimnagar, the first-ever appearance of the species documented in Telangana.

TN Spark launched at 96 government schools in Kovai
COIMBATORE: The TN Spark initiative, which was recently launched by the school education department, has been introduced at 96 government higher secondary schools in Coimbatore district. The aim of this initiative is to teach government school students from classes 6 to 9 how to handle AI tools, the fundamentals of computer science, and online tools using the hi-tech labs. A top educational officer from the district school education department told TNIE that the first phase of training for computer science teachers and Administrative-cum-Instructors (AIs) staff of 23 government schools was recently completed as part of this initiative. He said the second phase of training will be conducted for teachers and AI staff in the coming weeks. "In this training, teachers and staff are taught what AI is and how to handle it efficiently. Before that, it is essential for students to know how to use computer fundamentals, which we have provided training for. We also trained them on online tools such as image and math tools, which are important for daily use," he said. He said that after completing this training, teachers and AI staff will impart these skills to students at the hi-tech labs soon, and a special period will be allocated for this purpose. Further, he said books will be distributed to the schools soon. K Prema, a computer science teacher in Coimbatore, told TNIE that the training was good and that through this initiative, students will be able to learn programmes in an advanced level.

KOCHI: As Fort Kochi hosts the first Cosmos Malabaricus Summer School, from August 11 to 14, it will mark a crucial step in the Kerala Council for Historical Research's (KCHR) journey to expand Indian Ocean studies, challenge colonial historiographies and foster international academic collaborations -- through the Cosmos Malabaricus project. The summer school aims to create an active platform for scholarly exchange, archival engagement, and field-based learning. Venu Rajamony, former ambassador of India to the Netherlands, told TNIE that, 'The Cosmos Malabaricus Summer School promises an intensive and practice-based learning experience that will see scholars being taken on a tour based on maps made by the Dutch. It will be short journey starting from Fort Kochi that will also cover Vypeen, Bolgatty, and Varapuzha.' Dr Ganesh K N, chairperson, KCHR, highlighted that summer school is a step forward in disseminating knowledge. 'The school will see the participation of 30-odd research scholars. Six scholars have arrived from the Netherlands. It will follow a class format,' he said.

Telangana's high-powered council to propel state's USD 3 trillion vision
HYDERABAD: The Telangana government is set to accelerate its long-term development strategy, Telangana Rising 2047, with its High-Powered Advisory Council meeting scheduled for Saturday, according to senior government officials. The Council comprises a diverse group of eminent economists, technocrats, and public intellectuals, including Nobel laureate Prof Abhijit Banerjee, former RBI governors Dr Raghuram Rajan and Dr Duvvuri Subbarao, Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen. It is tasked with guiding the formulation of a 22-year roadmap focused on inclusive growth, economic transformation, and sustainability. A senior official in the Chief Minister's Office told TNIE that the state aims to become a $3 trillion economy by promoting high-growth sectors such as startups, MSMEs, tourism, media and exports. Hub for advanced mfg, space tech and R&D Telangana also plans to position itself as a hub for advanced manufacturing, space tech, and R&D while expanding Global Capability Centres (GCCs), he said. A document accessed by TNIE showed that the vision outlines a regionally balanced development model, integrating urban, peri-urban and rural areas through innovation clusters and logistics hubs. Key social objectives include agri-tech adoption, youth skilling, women's economic inclusion, and improved healthcare and nutrition.
