Ohio State women's basketball coach charged with driving while impaired
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff, the Big Ten's 2024 coach of the year, was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired last week, police said.
Officers said McGuff hit several curbs and drove into a yard, where he was found behind the wheel on May 6 in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, according to an arrest report. McGuff refused to give a breath sample, police said.

McGuff has led Ohio State to eight NCAA tournament appearances in 12 seasons and a Big Ten title in the 2023-2024 season. He previously coached at Washington and Xavier and has a career record of 479-212.
Ohio State issued a statement saying it was aware of the charge.
'The department is in communication with Coach McGuff and monitoring the situation closely,' the statement said. 'This is an ongoing, personal legal matter, and the department will share additional information at the appropriate time.'

Overrated or underrated? Paul Finebaum weighs in on Alabama football's preseason ranking
Alabama football is looking to bounce back following a 2024 season that saw the Crimson Tide lose four games for the first time since Nick Saban's first year in Tuscaloosa in 2007. After going 9-4 a year ago, Alabama is ranked No. 8 in both the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 poll entering 2025. According to longtime ESPN college football voice Paul Finebaum, the Crimson Tide are underrated entering Year 2 under coach Kalen DeBoer. Finebaum joined fellow ESPN college football analyst Heather Dinich on Tuesday's edition of "Get Up" and told Dinich and host Mike Greenberg that Alabama was ranked too low. "Don't be too shocked by this, Greeny, but Ohio State is too high and Heather, calm down, Alabama is too low," Finebaum said. "I really think Alabama is a serious national championship contender." It's easy to see why Finebaum is high on Alabama. Even with a first-year starter at quarterback in Ty Simpson, the Crimson Tide return a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Ryan Williams, Germie Bernard and Isaiah Horton lead one of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the nation. Jam Miller returns at tailback with another year of experience under his belt, and with Kadyn Proctor leading the way up front, PFF (Pro Football Focus) ranked Alabama with the best offensive line in the nation entering 2025. Alabama's defense features elite pass rushers in LT Overton and Tim Keenan, plus linebacker Deontae Lawson and a secondary that's widely seen as one of the best units in the country with cornerbacks Domani Jackson and Zabien Brown, and safeties Keon Sabb and Bray Hubbard. The Crimson Tide open the season at Florida State at Tallahassee's Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 30. The game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on ABC. The Seminoles are unranked in the preseason top 25 polls. Paul Finebaum calls Ohio State 'overrated' entering 2025 Finebaum expanded on his thoughts that Ryan Day's Buckeyes (No. 2 Coaches Poll, No. 3 AP) were ranked too high coming off their national championship season a year ago. "I don't get Ohio State at all, Greeny," Finebaum said Tuesday. "I know they won the national championship last year. That has nothing to do with it. They don't have the same team, and that national championship hangover is going to get to them. We'll see that in about two and a half weeks when Texas gets up there and walks out of that stadium a winner." Ohio State hosts the Texas in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup on Aug. 30 in Columbus. Finebaum said recently that he believes Texas with Arch Manning at quarterback will win the national championship this season. Tennessee soccer preview versus top-ranked North Carolina to kick off 2025 season
Tennessee will kick off its 2025 soccer season Thursday. The Lady Vols will host No. 1 North Carolina at Regal Soccer Stadium. Rankings reflect the preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll. Kickoff between the Lady Vols and Tar Heels is slated for 7 p.m. EDT and the season opener will be televised by SEC Network. North Carolina leads the soccer series versus Tennessee, 12-0-1, all time dating to Sept. 5, 1997. Tennessee tied the Tar Heels, 0-0 in double overtime, on Sept. 10, 2004. Joe Kirt enters his fourth season as Tennessee's head coach in 2025. He previewed facing the top-ranked Tar Heels. 'I think it's where we want to finish the season, right,' Kirt said. 'We want to play those games in December, so let's figure out where we are early on. It's going to be no different than playing Clemson over the weekend. It is going to help us prepare for not only what we're going to see in the league, but what we're going to see in the NCAA Tournament. 'I think it's right away we're going to know here's where we are, here's where we need to improve, here's what we need to keep doing. It's why we're here to compete for national championships, so let's see where we are straight away.' CFP Bracket Watch: No. 1 Texas would be among 4 from SEC in 12-team field based on preseason poll
Texas, Penn State, Ohio State and Clemson would be the top four seeds in the College Football Playoff based on The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll with Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon and Alabama hosting first-round games. The first poll-based bracket includes four teams from the Southeastern Conference, three from the Big Ten, two from Atlantic Coast Conference, one from the Big 12, one from the Mountain West and one independent. Based on the preseason Top 25 rankings, the CFP would open like this: — No. 9 seed LSU at No. 8 seed Alabama. Winner vs. No. 1 Texas in the Sugar Bowl. — No. 12 seed Boise State at No. 5 seed Georgia. Winner vs. No. 4 Clemson in the Orange Bowl. — No. 10 seed Miami at No. 7 seed Oregon. Winner vs. No. 2 Penn State in the Rose Bowl. — No. 11 seed Arizona State at No. 6 seed Notre Dame. Winner vs. No. 3 Ohio State at the Cotton Bowl. The first three teams outside the bracket: Illinois, South Carolina, Michigan. The Illini are ranked No. 12 by the AP but would get bumped by the fifth conference champion, which in this case would be Boise State, which is No. 25 in the poll. The AP will publish brackets based on the weekly Top 25 until the CFP selection committee unveils its initial rankings in early November. The five highest-ranked conference champions will automatically qualify for the CFP, but no longer will the four highest-ranked champions receive a first-round bye. The 12-team bracket is now seeded directly based on the CFP's final rankings, with the four highest-ranked teams receiving a first-round bye. There still could be the same sort of shuffling seen last season when CFP No. 16 Clemson was seeded 12th in the bracket after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference. The four highest-ranked teams will be assigned to quarterfinals in ranking order and in consideration of current bowl relationships. For example, if the highest-ranked team is from the SEC, that team would be assigned to the Sugar Bowl. This year, quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl. The No. 1 seed would receive preferential placement based on geography. Teams ranked Nos. 5-12 by the CFP will play in the first round, with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded school.
