Former Australian cricket captain and coach Bob Simpson dies aged 89
The cricketer, who was born in Sydney in 1936, played 62 Tests for Australia, scoring 4,689 runs — with 10 centuries and 27 50s — and taking 71 wickets.
He made his Test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1957, and his first century came in an Ashes Test at Old Trafford in 1964 — Simpson went on to score 311.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was among the first to pay tribute to Simpson.
He is one of only seven Australians to make a triple-century.
Simpson captained Australia in 39 Tests in three stints between 1963 and 1978.
After nearly a decade away from Test cricket, he was called out of retirement after the arrival of World Series Cricket in 1977.
He played a home series against India, and a tour against the West Indies in the Caribbean.
He went on to coach the national team for more than a decade — under his mentorship, Australia rebounded to win the 1986 Cricket World Cup, several Ashes series, including the regaining of the urn in England in 1989, and winning the Frank Worrell Trophy for the first time in 1995, beating the West Indies in the Caribbean.
After stepping down from the role in 1996, Simpson was a consultant to the Indian national team in the late 90s, and coached the Netherlands national team for a period.
He received numerous honours, including his induction into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame in 1985, to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2006, and the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013.
He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1978, and an Officer of the order in 2007.

Australia need 173 to win the T20 series against South Africa after game two centurion Dewald Brevis again put on a show at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns, as his maximums caused trouble for not just Australia but a member of the crowd as well. Nathan Ellis (3/31), Adam Zampa (2/24) and Josh Hazlewood (2/30) were all excellent with the ball after Australian captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected the bowl first. But Brevis went ballistic again in the middle overs, launching four sixes in one Aaron Hardie over to bring up his half-century from just 22 deliveries. The 22-year-old fell shortly after for 53 off 26, superbly caught in the deep by a diving Glenn Maxwell after he miscued a Nathan Ellis slower ball bouncer. Brevis launched six sixes in his half century, three of which went out of the ground and four of his sixes were launched 100 metres or further. The biggest was a 120m bomb over long on that could have caused a lot more damage than it did to a local fan who crashed into a fence, which it cleared, trying to take a spectacular crowd catch. Cricket's commentary team were in fits of laughter as the fan was okay, with former Australian leg spinner Kerry O'Keeffe jokingly asking, 'is he impaled?'. Brevis was Ellis' second scalp of the night however, after removing Lhuan-dre Pretorius (24 off 15) by also taking pace off the shorter delivery. Adam Zampa also showed that a lack of pace is the way to go on the Cairns pitch, picking up opener Ryan Rickelton (13 off 13) after he top edged a sweep shot from a Zampa wrong-un wide outside off stump. The leg spinner almost had Brevis in his first over too, but Maxwell unable to hang on to a diving effort at long on. Rassie van der Dussen also played an impressive knock, finishing unbeaten on 38 off 26.

The Rabbitohs have put a stop to fans' plans to storm the field when Alex Johnston breaks the NRL try scoring record, much to the dismay of the footy world. The Rabbitohs issued a warning to fans on Saturday to 'celebrate from the stands' rather than run onto the field if the winger breaks the record, preventing the NRL from having its own Buddy Franklin moment. 'When AJ breaks the record, we ask that fans celebrate from the stands.' When the Swans and Hawthorn great booted his 1000th career goal, fans stormed the pitch in spectacular scenes. And many felt that the NRL was finally about to get its moment in the sun, with Johnston only needing three tries to tie, and four to break Ken Irvine's longstanding record. But Souths have extinguished that plan, something NRL great Luke Lewis labelled 'dumb'. 'That's dumb,' Lewis said, speaking about Souths' post begging fans not to storm the pitch on ABC Sport. 'We're going into something that we'll probably never see again. 'I loved it when the AFL had all the supporters run on the field. The regular pooling of water and bad drainage at Allianz Stadium- where Souths will face the Eels on Saturday night – poses a serious hazard for supporters who may opt to charge onto the field. Under the Sydney Cricket and Sportsground Act (NSW) 1978, pitch invaders can be fined up to $5500 and a two-year ban from the venue. So there is plenty of a deterrent, but whether fans listen, well, we will have to wait and see. Johnston has played his entire 240-game NRL career with the Rabbitohs and is a fan favourite. The 30-year-old faces the Eels, Dragons and Roosters to end the season.
